Mikkel Legarth from Denmark and Valentin Gruener from Germany founded Modisa Wildlife Project in 2010 – a project with the ambition of creating awareness and preserving the Kalahari ecosystem and its predators. Modisa’s aim is to engage in the conservation of the Kalahari ecosystem by promoting awareness at the local and global scale, assisting in the mitigation of human-carnivore conflict, and providing support to researchers. You can get an adventure of a lifetime by taking part in our conservation work, get close-up encounters with Africa’s most iconic animals and meet new friends from all over the world. One of the last truly wild spaces on earth

Apart from being a project to help survive the big cats, Modisa confronts you to review the way you are living your life. It changed my life at the age of 61, realising that there are other ways of living than parttaking in the rat race of modern western life.

The Kalahari Central Reserve is a harsh region, and at the same time of breath taking beauty. I miss Modisa every day.

Life-changing experience

Sure, all the activities are GREAT, and something I will never ever forget - but for me, the nights and mornings at Modisa are what I miss the most. After ending the evening at the bonfire, chatting with the other volunteers, I would crawl under the covers in my own little tent, appreciating the chill night after another hot day. The smell of after-sun lotion still takes me back to those evenings. I would open the windows and door, only keeping the unwanted guests out by the rough mosquito net. As I would gaze upon the beautiful Milky Way, listening to crickets singing their last serenade, the sound of chitchatting volunteers at the neighboring tents would reassure me, that they had yet another memorable day, just like i did. I would wake up in the middle of the night, hearing the roar of the lions, jackals calling and zebras making their alarm calls far, far away. I would go back to sleep with a smile on my face, well aware of the privilege of being surrounded by such astonishing nature, that was truly amazing. The sun would rise, and as the birds started to sing another day at Modisa began. My heart surely did burst with joy, every morning when I spotted new animal tracks just outside my tent, bearing witness of the guests passing through camp every night.
Modisa simply changed my life - and I am absolutely convinced that it will change yours too.

Experience of a life time

If you want to be a part of something great, nd go for a little "holiday" where you can help out with different kinds of assignments, Modisa is the place to go. Not one a day is the same and you get the chance to experiance the wildlife and wild nature of Botswana up close, with the help from the staff crew. You can go there and even get support to make a little project for yourself if it is somehow related to the project. It doesn't matter if it is the wildlife we all love to watch, or the small insects, that can intrigue even the common turist. The opportunity to observe predators and antilopes at fairly close distance is amazing and the people and network you get involved with is something I will never forget....
Best time of my life, and it might have been my first but definately not the last trip to Modisa :)

best days ofy life

So nice and good people who help you to come back down to earth and show you what really matters in life - you will notice when you're back home. A group which takes you, as who you really are and they won't change you and give you one of the best feelings you've ever had. You will learn so much about animals and nature, that you will realise, no matter where you are, that you have to take care about the nature, the animals, your planet.

Incredible adventure and fantastic lifetime experience!

It´s been a while since I visited Modisa. But from time to time I´m still thinking about this awesome, informative and special experience. Unforgettable these collected moments, sitting at the warming campfire and listening to Val playing the guitar.
Unforgettable these Game Drives with Jack or lectures with Val for learning much about the flora and fauna around the camp and Botswana.
Feeding lions, wild dogs and leopards, going for a walk with Sirga, cleaning the airstrip, building up the camp and sharing all these experiences with other volunteers, while having dinner, drinking a cold Hansa and watching these breathtaking Botswana star-spattered sky.
I really had a blast and will definitely come back!

Amazing experience

If you would like to know all there is to know about the African wildlife and how to properly manage it through wildlifemanagement Modisa is the place to go. You will experience the though and wild nature real close, even the lions. There is much work to be done, so it's not a place to go if you want a Holliday. You will make a difference there, and make the life of the many lions better. Valentine is the perfect host, he knows so much about the wildlife and the nature, plus he is a really nice person. You will also have the opportunity to meet the bushmen from Botswana, who have lived in the Bush for many years. Modisa is a great place to be and I would recommend it to people of all ages.

Life Changing.

I visited Modisa for 6 weeks, that give me countless lifetime experiences. To me it is a unique combination of education, fun, stunning moments and new experiences that you simply can’t find anywhere else than in Africa. I can’t tell you how many times I was speechless after having seen, heard, tasted or felt Africa, because there are simply too many. I can only tell you that you will never find what you get at Modisa anywhere else. To feel the way I have felt, you HAVE to go! It is unique.

Thank you for the memories that I will carry with me the rest of my life!

A life changing experience

I've spent the best part of 2015 at Modisa and i would have stayed longer if I was able. You find yourself in the Kalahari with strangers and yet you never feel more at home. There is a real family atmosphere at Modisa while the project also offers one of the most educational and fun experiences in the world, where you are at one with nature going on game drives bush walks and predator feeding activities all the time. The project is also an amazing way of keeping fit if you want to be active and at no point do you feel forced to do anything so if you feel tired or ill you can relax and catch a tan, but you won't because you'll be too enamoured with the whole volunteer lifestyle. For me it became home, and this being the second time I've been and gone, take my word when I say that when you leave Modisa, you'll leave with a collection of funny and amazing stories, a new group of lifelong like minded friends, and a longing to go back.
