Get ripped off at Ritchie Brothers- Iron Planet

This company breaks retail laws and will sell your auction items to their friends at very cheap prices, e.g. sold my 3 x 12 mtr dongas for A$2200 total to their friend, their friend sold them for A$65,000 days later, the Queensland Office of Fair Trading found they broke the law but being USA based, they don't care. PLEASE DONT TRUST THIS COMPANY WITH YOUR AUCTION ITEMS.

Legal Issues and Unethical Business…

Legal Issues and Unethical Business Practices at Ritchie Bros. Auctions: A Cautionary Tale

When entering the world of business, transparency and reliability are paramount for any credible buyer and seller. Unfortunately, my experience with Ritchie Bros. auctioneers revealed a dark side of entrepreneurship that many ignore until it's too late. This British Columbia-registered company is beset by numerous legal disputes, raising serious concerns about its integrity and business ethics.
At first glance, Ritchie Bros. auctioneers appear to be a legitimate business. Their honest practices entice customers with promises of high-quality products and exceptional service. However, the reality is far more sinister. The sheer number of lawsuits against them should serve as a warning sign for anyone considering doing business with the company.

Disappointed

Sold a highway truck in Aug 13, 2025 sale. Never got paid for the truck, RB collapsed sale 5 weeks later, claiming we didn't disclose a coolant leak. Buyer bought and paid for truck and drove 315km and brought the truck back to RB. RB refunded their money. So RB buyer and seller terms and conditions mean shit. Went to pick up truck and dash has been pulled apart.

Something stinks

Something stinks. Was bidding on a compressor listed with Iron Planet. I offered 48K they countered at 52K. I agreed to the price of 52K and they countered again at 55K. Richie rep asked for email with the 52K counteroffer which I provided. He stated that we were right and was going to contact seller. Next day I receive an email that they sold it to someone else for $52,100.00. Now the Rep won't return a call.

They're extremely dishonest

They're extremely dishonest. They're not what they used to be. They have many flaws. No one regulates them. That's why we now buy more safely at regional auctions. And it's not like we're going to defend ourselves with lawyers. That doesn't work.

UPDATE

UPDATE: They got their money 7\1. I requested the title and a Bill of Sale on 7\21. 7\23 I got the title, but no Bill of Sale. The state won't register it until they have it. I have contacted RBros everyday since. They created an incident with their title dept. Truck has been sitting in my yard since July 3. It is the 4th of August and I'm still waiting.

As bad as it gets

As bad as it gets. Dishonest rude lazy with poor communication. I’m ethnic and I was forced to deal with racial slurs and truly discriminatory behavior. This is an ugly company. Go elsewhere.

Ritchie brothers and their process for…

Ritchie brothers and their process for buying a large crane is absolutely horrific and they do not have their act together. This has almost been the worst 16 days of my life and their entire management team should be ashamed. These people keep pushing us in a circle going from easily buying the equipment online to needing a trillion different little things on every single document in the entire world that has anything to do with the field of work that you’re in. Ridiculous. I could type a million words in the review right now that wouldn’t even get close to how awful this process has been. I’ll never buy through them again. I’ll bring a suitcase full of cash money to the seller of anything I want before I go through Ritchie brothers or their sister companies ever again. If you find something you want to buy then contact the seller and avoid Ritchie brothers…
Their management team should be immediately fired and someone else come in and fix this crappy process they got going on here… absurd.
Why do I have to beg you to take my $270,000.00 and then jump through a million hoops to make you take my money! Just take the damn money and transport the machines!!!

I purchased an “unused” piece of…

I purchased an “unused” piece of equipment at a recent auction. When I inspected the equipment after the auction, they were many deficiencies, including substantial fluid leaks. I have spoken with the yard manager several times over the last seven days and their stance is that someone must’ve filled it with fluid during the auction and it spilled all over the machine. I asked her who did this and she stated that she did not know. This reply is unacceptable to me. I escalated this to upper management and their response was it was sold as is where is even if it was an unused piece of equipment.I stated that the leaks and other deficiencies should’ve been listed in the report. I do not recommend buying equipment at Richey brothers auctions.

Bait and Switch or Was it?

Made an offer and was expected to finance since I was already preapproved and was waiting on the items to be financed. Days go by and they notified me that the interest rate would be (14.9%) and it was under 10k (my mistake) so the rep (TylerK) says you need another purchase to get over 10K, I was reluctant but I needed a trailer anyway. More days go by and no response. On the last day they decline the purchase stating they couldn't finance the trailer and the truck was not enough. I'm thinking what just happened (bait and switch). Luckily I had a back-up plan because they are very uninformative but they will overload your email begging for your business. Definitely have your plans A and B. If its your first time ease into it because you will surely miss something.

Be aware of tax rates on equipment lication.

I never had a bad experience onsite picking equipment up. However I will warn you about taxes and where your equipment is located. I was shocked to see a 10 percent tax on a Welder in LA. Between tax and action fee made something inexpensive not worth buying. It added 20 percent to the total cost. So look at the state tax on the location. It can be a make it or break it.
