Its a shame as when it does the jets are awesome. The showers are dirty/scummy and suffering big time from no investment.

Dirty. Disrepair. Disappointment.

Having previously been a long standing member of nearby 24/7 Fitness, I was (mis)sold a membership at Everlast York on the promise of a full gym refurb.
Everlast Gym York is a sorry excuse of a facility, lacking facilities, cleanliness and any form of leadership or management.
Sadly I’m stuck with a membership until early 26. With Pure gym, a revamped 24/7 Fitness and a brand new JD Gym all within half a mile, Roko / Everlast has no chance of survival without significant and rapid change in facilities and management.
Summary: Join a proper gym instead.

Disappointing Decline Since Everlast Takeover

I originally joined this gym when it was Roko, and it operated more like a leisure club with a great range of classes and instructors. Since Everlast took over, things have gone downhill fast.

Most of the original instructors have left, and the quality of the facilities has really declined. The equipment is often out of order, there’s no Wi-Fi, and the spin bikes don't work properly. Surprisingly, even budget gyms like PureGym (which cost around £25 per month) now offer better facilities.

Everlast blacked out the windows, added some signage, and announced a price increase—but provided almost no communication with members during the takeover. Cleanliness has noticeably worsened as well.

I wouldn’t recommend joining this gym until (or unless) a full refurbishment is actually completed.

This club is dirtiest one Ive seen

This club is dirtiest one Ive seen in my life! Nobody cares to clean or repair damages even if you repart it and tell management that the same dirt is there for many months! Good example is the hole in the wall at health suite just next to the showers - its there for a year or so, and many other nasty looking issues - Health and Safety Department should take an action as its simply unsafe for users! Shocking ignorance! Im not a member, but been there couple of times as a guest and simply cant belive that members accept it and pay so much money to train and relax in so dirty and nasty place! Owners and managers should just visit one of the cheap gyms around and see how clean they are comparing to this club! Not recomended even for my enemies! Awfull and disgusting place!

Don't Join ROKO (Now Everlast) until 2026

I feel I have to give potential new members a heads up about this gym. Roko has recently been bought out by Everlast. The gym is not due to be renovated until the back end of 2025 and therefore the standards have fallen sharply. Lots of Gym equipment is broken and has been for months. The Sauna has been condemned as a health and safety hazard and is not due to be replaced until the back end of 2025 along with the rest of the gym equipment. The wifi has not worked for months. The cleanliness is poor (I could go on...).
They are currently signing members up at the new Everlast prices (£60p/m) with none of the services you should be getting. I would highly recommend waiting until the gym is refitted before committing!

ODE TO HARRY

So I’m new to the whole health thing, it was all very scary. Harry (the fitness coach) made everything so good. He’s very professional, very informative, very supportive.

Can’t thank him enough, give this guy a promo!

Love the place too.

Dirty gym

Dirty gym. I get a sore throat after every workout. The steam rooms just a room, no steam. Full of weird little men. If something’s broken, it might aswell be forgotten about. It’s just been bought so I’d wait to join but I can’t see much improvement. Serious money needed.
*update. The hairdryers don’t work and people have been choosing a £13 month gym over this place*

I returned to Roko Health Club after an absence of eight years. Wanting yo focus on my health i plunged straight back in with regular Aqua Aerobics classes which led on to Pilates and Bone Density Pilates all taught by the fantasyic teacher Vanessa Declercq who teaches structured classes and shows us how to exercise properly. The Club is friendly and well organised and i have not looked back since i joined in January 2024, nearly one year ago.

Roko Gym York - in state of disrepair

As a long standing member and supporter of Roko I am finding it increasingly difficult to be positive about the state of the York Gym.

For months, every time I have attended the gym something is not working or not cleaned. Compared to what it was it's in a worsening and sorry state of disrepair.

Recently, one if not 2 of the sauna, jacuzzi or steam room have been constantly out of action. In the last few days the showers were closed. Baskets in the showers are dirty, hanging off or not there any more. Both urinals have not been working and the toilets are starting to smell. I have now even taken to phoning up to see what's not working before I attend so that I can judge if the trip is worth it.

The gym floor. Again always some form of machinery not working.

At the moment I'm trying to keep going but I'm sorry to say this is not a gym I could recommend. Despite the ownership issues (which are used as an excuse) someone needs to get a grip of the place before everyone leaves and there is little value left in the business. There are plenty of gyms nearby all in good working order - and probably cheaper to be a member of.

I am also slightly disappointed that there have been no apologies for the state of the gym. It seems to me we are all paying a monthly subscription - that has not been reduced during this period of obvious stress and lack of proper maintenance for the business - as we are certainly not getting the service we paid for. That has been the case for well over 6 months, if not longer.

It seems The owners are clearly willing to let it fall further into disrepair rather than doing something about it and protecting the members who want to stay but are doubtlessly thinking why - when they can pay for something better not that far away.

Management - please take the state of the gym seriously, I and others pay good money to attend and what we are getting is not good enough. Please get a grip of the obvious disrepair, listen to your members and take some action and fix it !! and let's get this gym back to what it used to be like

Trash gym full of abusive ned flanders-esque tories

Steam room and sauna frequently running on meagre temperature or out of order. Jacuzzi often looks like swamp water. "Ice shower" is tepid water and the taps broken so it works 30% of the time. Bikes are that old they fall apart when you put your foot into them. They seem to let a bunch of people in for free that they like...Full of kids sitting on their phones taking up machines for 45 minutes at a time. Outdoor pool shut in November. Mainly joined for the pool and spa so it all being pretty trash is not great and there's a gym across the road that's less than half the price but just doesn't have a spa room or pool, which i guess the same could be said for roko. I made a complaint because the steam room was not working to four of the staff, in the gym. The day after i had my locker broken into and my gym card stolen...for saying the steam room was not working. I again confronted the staff saying it was quite obvious it was them and i was given a guest card and sassily told to let them know if i wanted to make it a permanent card...The day after they told me they had received a prank call from someone pretending to be me and saying "i need to change my address"...therefore threatening me with my personal information. I requested a log of the call, the phone number it came from and the information of the phone service provider. They told me they can't because of dpa. I told them it's on my account and that they had asked me if the call had come from me, therefore it's my information. They have not responded and it's been about a month. It's a gym full of 50 year olds on a hundred grand a year who think they're great because they have a fancy watch and twelve year olds that use it like a youth club...if that's your thing, sign up.

If i'm completely honest i think the staff maybe go out of their way to treat me like this because i put some videos on youtube and wrote some journal entries where i included that a high ranking member of st giles church told an eleven year old boy not to master**** and that he had shown him how to *****bate his body so that he would o*g**m...It could be that and at least one of the trainers used to go to that church. Either way i've sent an email to the manager of roko's head office who stays in the Nottingham branch and to the guy who signed me up asking to cancel my membership and i've had no response. I even gave them an out of saying they could admit to all the bullying or use my apparent mental health as an excuse. They responded in seconds when i wanted to sign up, no response after five days so far. I tried using the website to provide feedback and it just kept giving me error messages. I guess they're another institution being run like a fascist government so if you give any feedback or complain they just don't allow it...It's probably also why there are rumours they can't function and are being sold out.

I'm just going to cancel the direct debit either way and if they take it to court i'll read out the prior email chains.

Cancel my membership and refund my last payment.

Bye.

Spa and pool area is rarely cleaned with black gunk and dirty water around. Mens changing rooms are in a bad condition with dirt under the chairs on the floor. The worst is the mens showers, with black mould everywhere on the ceilings. When raised this issue they always claim they are selling the gym and will not be fixing this despite I have a lung condition. In terms of gym they only have 1 set of weights so often I often have to wait between sets, no worth the premium money

Roko ride rocks!

I thoroughly enjoyed a ‘roko ride’ class with Simon, it was fun, challenging and interactive!
Followed by some weight work on the gym floor!
Great atmosphere and not ‘judgey’ like some gyms. Which means a lot when you’re in your mid 50’s feeling very vulnerable and lacking in confidence… there’s life in the old girl yet!
