Consistently very high standard of work and reliability

I’ve used Roger’s business for over 15 years at both my house, and my mum’s house.
All work has been completed with real competence and honesty.
On every single occasion the team turned up on time and got to work.

2 specific occasions deserve special mention.

Firstly my mum’s boiler broke during an exceptionally cold Winter’s day (a Friday).
I was away and when Roger understood she was over 80 years old, he ensured that the boiler was fixed, even though it was very late on Friday evening.

Secondly, again (about 10 years later) on a cold day, (Thursday) this year, early 2026, the boiler completely broke down. The team arrived, temporarily fixed the boiler, and ordered a new boiler which arrived the next day and was fitted on the Monday.

Great work!

Many thanks to the R.S team for…

Many thanks to the R.S team for servicing all our central heating system and getting a radiator to work which other plumbers had failed to do successfully.

I am pleased that the system is now working correctly and I would like to thank you
for taking the trouble to post a review.
They do keep us in business and the fitters appreciate it.

My experience.

I rang this firm at the direction of my elderly mum, who was looking to get a new boiler.

She's had a bad experience in the past and asked me to ask if they had insurance and check they were gas safe etc...

They informed me that yes, they were insured "because you have to be to be GasSafe registered."

I checked the GasSafe site, which states:
"[GasSafe] Do not check public liability and indemnity insurances for registered businesses/engineers."

Was there some mistake?

"Get someone else to do the job"

Under the circumstances I decided that was probably the best course of action.

Dear UniqueObjects
I am sorry that you have had a bad experience in contacting us but as the post is anonymous
there is no way of checking.
All of our gas engineers are Gas Safe registered and we carry all insurances.
We do try to answer all enquiries with consideration and politeness but appear that we
were unsuccessful on this occasion.
Please accept my apologies.

RS Heating - a very positive experience

RS Heating, efficiently coordinated by boss Roger Unwin, have worked on several projects at our house and on each occasion they have provided excellent service. 14 other glowing reviews can be found under another entry on Trustpilot: RS Heating Ltd.

The most recent work they did for us was reconstructing a wet room in our basement. The original room was built to such a poor standard that it had to be completely decommissioned and started again from scratch. The builder responsible for this appallingly shoddy job was the same person that Roger Unwin subcontracted to work on the property belonging to the only client to give a negative review of RS Heating on this website. I'm sorry this person had such a bad experience but I feel it's entirely attributable to the subcontractor's incompetence and lack of integrity.

Roger was taken in by this other builder's plausibility (as we were) and we've both had to pay the consequences. When we withheld the final payment on the grounds that the job had not been finished, the other builder threatened to take us to court. Unfortunately this coincided with my husband having a stroke so we paid the final bill to avoid the stress of litigation. We have effectively paid for the wet room twice, but at least we've ended up with a smart, new room that is fit for purpose, thanks to the outstanding workmanship of Lee and Scott of RS Heating.

We will continue to ask Roger and his expert team to undertake building and plumbing work for us, confident that they will always deliver a high quality service with the minimum of disruption.

Dear Amanda
I thank you so much for your show of confidence.
It is especially gratifying when I'm a little low after trying to get the
negative job correct for most of this year and then when a settlement had been paid to receive the terrible posting.
Bless you
Roger

Avoid at all costs!

RS-H&B Co. secured the contract to renovate my house based on a complete pack of lies regarding their ability, and competence to do so.

A 12 week job, after 13 weeks I was forced to move back into the property with no kitchen, bathroom, or flushing toilet!

At this point the deception and dishonesty began to unravel rapidly.

Despite the contract clearly stating work will be carried out to BS Codes of Practice, beyond the wiring, none of it has been.
None of the boarding, plastering, door, door frames or any carpentry is fit for purpose!

Both staircases were effectively destroyed, with stair toes ripped off and treads caved in.
The main staircase was repaired to such a low standard it will need to be done again.
The attic staircase was replaced with something unfit/unsafe, and does not meet building regs.

The cellar head, despite not being part of the contract, was gutted without any consultation. When it came time to put that right... "sorry it's not part of the contract, I'll have to charge you to put it right!" (I refused!)

There is no QA process whatsoever! Roger isn't there checking the job is going right, he's there telling his lads to hurry up and bodge stuff, so they can get on to the next job.

The words "straight", "level" and "right angle" are completely alien concepts to Roger and the employees of this company!

When confronted with the issues, Roger initially claimed he would put it right, but the repairs were of even lower quality! The vast majority of issues were simply ignored, and remaining work bodged on top, with obvious results!

Roger realised the game was up and the excuses began:
"I can't afford to put it right, I'll go bust"
"I'm 77, I'll retire and you'll get nothing"
"I've got so much work on I'm rammed, and can't spare the time to put it right"
"I've under quoted, I need to up the quote"

You name it, I've heard it!

It soon became clear that Rogers main concern was that if he was in my shoes he wouldn't pay himself either! Thus the demands for "good will" payments for merely looking at the problems (not actually doing anything) began.

Eventually this culminated in a revised quote (despite my refusal), for an extra ~£3000(+VAT), dropped without any explanation or agreement. The bathroom installation mysteriously went from 4k to 7k, despite it being done wrong, root and branch!

Then a demand that I promise to pay everything in full (despite the overwhelming amount of shoddy, incorrectly done work), or he would not continue to rectify the issues he was responsible for creating!

RS H&B effectively conjured up an excuse to do a runner… and that's precisely what they did.

Which?TT got involved. An inspector sent out, who upheld my complaint, and a cost of repair was calculated to be approx £40,000!

Almost everything beyond the wiring needs serious remedial work or re-doing from scratch, including every wall going back to brick again! Every door and frame re-doing from scratch.

In terms of the walls, doors, flooring and general carpentry, the house has been “renovated” to a standard far far lower than existed before the work began!

The kitchen and bathroom installation are basically a joke. Shoddy and substandard work throughout.

To top it all off, the boiler broke down 4 weeks after they did a runner, more than the previous one did in 20 years!

Turns out, installation error! That's supposedly their bread and butter work, but they couldn't even get that right. I got a reputable plumber to do the job properly!

*Every* contractor sent out (even the ones sent by RS H&B) describe the standard of work, particularly the carpentry as "Disgusting"!
Decorators don't want to paint the walls, the standard is so bad it'll reflect badly on them!

So, my home now has no possibility of decorating or carpeting, let alone having any furniture in it’s current state. An entire floor is unusable because of health and safety problems as a direct result of RS H&B’s incompetence/negligence!

Despite owning my own house... 5 months of no furniture and sleeping on the floor was enough for me, so I'm now back to living in rented accommodation! (with all the costs that entails)

This company is an utter disgrace! Dishonest through and through. Rotten and incompetent to the core.

Roger is not only the worst tradesman I’ve ever had the misfortune to come into contact with, but also the worst human being. Small in stature, but also in ability, competency, honesty and decency. He is utterly shameless!

Every possible opportunity to try to rip me off was taken, as was every possible shortcut and bodge with regard to the work.

Avoid at all costs, 1 star is too good for this bunch of charlatans!

I will be posting a website detailing the work and damage done, with pictures and my complaints to the trader and Which? (.info domain)

Mr “Magilla”
I am sorry that we couldn’t resolve the issues that were encountered on this job to your satisfaction.
In all of the decades we have been in business, having earned a 5 star rating on Google and 4.8 on Which Trusted Trader, I have never experienced such a job.
The work entailed a full strip out and complete refurbishment in all aspects.
Unfortunately, although refurbishment is part of our business, when first asked to quote, I
realised that it could not be completed in the tight time frame allowed and I was going to
refuse the work.
However, having recently met a builder (mentioned on a previous posting by yourself)
and tried him out on a few smaller jobs, he assured me that he could do a professional
job in the time allowed, we proceeded.
You have previously listed the faults in your posting about him.
Both my Foreman, all of my fitters and myself tried to talk to him but to no avail.
Eventually, at a meeting of all concerned and being confronted with the multitude of problems,
he quietly walked off when we were otherwise engaged, never to be seen again.
My regular fitters then tried to correct matters and a considerably amount of time / effort
was spent but by now your confidence had been destroyed and the working conditions became
extremely unpleasant.
Eventually my fitters refused to work in the house because of the hostile, toxic atmosphere, ever changing demands, cigarette and other sweet, sickly smelling fumes.
Even then I was trying to resolve matters and located specialist staircase manufactures / Velux window
fitters and would have continued finding reputable contractors but did not get a positive answer when it was suggested.
You then contacted Which Trusted Trader who in turned passed it to an Ombudsman.
A Surveyor was arranged.
I was not permitted to be present and I was told that you would not be allowed to prompt him.
This was blatantly not the case and the report could have been written by yourself.
There were numerous errors eg. “remove shower tray” when a separate shower tray was not
fitted is just one example.
It was also vastly over-priced eg. skips at £350.00 each when I pay £200.00
His total price was £30098.38 plus vat not £40,000.00

As communication had broken down totally between us it was decided that a cash settlement
was the best way to settle the dispute.
£22,500.00 was agreed and paid within 7 days.
I also cancelled £13088.00 plus vat for work that had been carried out but not invoiced.
Your post on Trust Pilot appeared shortly after the payment had been made when I had been assured that the matter was closed.
In conclusion I would to say how profoundly sorry that I am for the upset caused by my trusting such
important work to a relatively new contractor to myself.
It is the worst mistake of my 50 years in the Building Industry and will never undertake work again
which cannot be entrusted to my long-established fitters.
