Review summary

Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Considering 243 reviews, most reviewers were unhappy with their experience overall. Many people were dissatisfied with the customer service, finding it unhelpful and difficult to reach, often being told no one could attend their reported animal welfare concerns. Reviewers frequently felt the organization lacked care for animals and expressed concerns about the handling of reports regarding animal welfare issues. Difficulty contacting the organization, especially by phone or online chat, was a common complaint, with many experiencing unresponsiveness. However, some people were satisfied with the staff, finding them caring, helpful, and supportive, particularly during adoption processes and when offering advice. Positive experiences were noted with specific animal centers, where staff were praised for their dedication to rehabilitating and rehoming animals.

Written by the company

At the RSPCA, we’re proud to be there for every kind— from pets in need to wild animals who need urgent care. Every day, our dedicated teams work tirelessly to protect animals, prevent cruelty, and offer hope in situations that are often distressing and complex. As a charity, we face difficult decisions about how to use our limited resources, and we must prioritise the most urgent and serious cases of abuse or neglect. This sometimes means we can’t attend every call, no matter how much we wish we could. When we’re unable to be there in person, we’ll help in other ways—offering you support, directing you to organisations that can help fast, and, when it’s safe, empowering you to take an animal to a vet. These shared efforts truly make a difference. We’re incredibly grateful for the kindness, patience, and support shown by the public. Together, we can continue to speak up for animals, protect those in need, and build a better world for every kind.

Really poor they dont care for the…

Really poor they dont care for the animals that want to be rescued twice in the past I've called them so has a family friend and they didnt want to know I've called for help and both times they said no sorry cant take animal in no room. But yet on adverts they plead you to save animals and call them etc all they want is your money and your money only profit becomes much more then saving the poor animal. Not a single person I spoke to has been interested in taking in any animal in the rspca

Hi Lisa,

I'm very sorry to hear you're disappointed after calling us to rehome an animal. We do our very best to help as many animals as possible, but with 907,797 calls in 2024 alone, we sadly can’t help every single one. There are hundreds of other charities out there also doing as much as they can but we're all under incredible pressure and only have limited resources.

In 2024, we dealt with 289,812 animal welfare incidents, rehomed 24,483 animals, convicted 527 people who deliberately harmed or neglected animals and returned 5,989 injured or orphaned animals to the wild after care in our centres, so we're always extremely busy in trying to create a better world for every animal

Usless

I reported my neighbor intentionally pouring bleach multiple times along a wall that my cat frequently uses. I have CCTV and gloves that i used to check what it was. Chatted with RSPCA told them all the details they just fobbed me off uninterested.

I had wrote a review on here on…

I had wrote a review on here on November the 6th about my bad experience with the RSPCA, of how I have concerns over a neighbours animal, the same neighbours that have previously had their animals removed from them for neglect.I had initially rang the RSPCA about this concern and reported this on the 26th August ,I had given all my details to the RSPCA at the time and i asked if they would keep me updated on this issue that is deeply concerning me.It is now November and I've heard no update so I wrote a review of my experience on here on the 6th.I was advised to fill in the complaints form which has probably got lost amongst all the other many numerous complaints forms that other people have been asked to fill in on here.I filled in the complaints form and received an automated response on the 12th November stating it had been received. It is now the 24th November and I have still heard no response to my complaint or any update on if this poor animals welfare will be investigated.

Hello again

If you have received an acknowledgement of your complaint, please get in touch direct with the Service Complaints Team to let them know of your concerns. They can't help you if they're not made aware. However, we know that when the Team sends out an acknowledgement to a complaint it always points out that the RSPCA aims to reply within 17 working days. Today (25/11/25) is working day 10, so there are still a few more days left.

Would never trust the RSPCA

Would never trust the RSPCA. They lied about my brother and ruined his life! Stating he was abusing and starving his dogs. But yet he had taken them to the vets 2 days before and still has the medication with him! He has pictures and proof of buying food in bulk and on his bank account! And also my parents buying food if my brother was short one week by a few days! Removing 2 dogs and leaving one! Him and my sister in law were told to plead guilty or pay a fine and end up in crown court and possible jail!

The woman who took the dogs without any police or vet's present even phoned my sister in law after taking the dogs and stated even she/they didn't know why the dog was losing so much weight!! It's normal for a whippet to lose weight when ill! And my brother never had time to give the medication he had from his own vets!

Don't believe me... look online about the others that have had the same happened to them!

In reply to Sarah... no you do not give people time to act and in the case of my brother... the woman working for you come to their home, took the dogs the same day! The pictures that were given were NOT of the dogs when they were taken! And again. One dog was left behind but apparently they were starving the other 2???? Bull****.... and what about all the other people who have come forward stating the same thing happened to them online?? A Google search and you will see hundreds of them! Says a lot when your ceo leaves and celebrities have boycotted your so called organisation! I would never trust you in any life time and I hope that everyone that has been wronged by you gets justice!

Hi Gemma

It’s not possible for me to comment on what happened with your brother’s dogs as I don’t have access to the specific information and a number of points would need looking into for an explanation to be given about what occurred. I can only say that in general terms officers are obliged to act within the law and are well trained in the necessary procedures and processes.

If someone has a complaint about an investigation involving themselves, we encourage them to fill out the website’s complaints form straight away at:

https://www.rspca.org.uk/utilities/contactus/complaints/form

Please let your brother know about the form if this is something that has happened recently.

As an animal welfare charity, we must investigate claims of animal cruelty that are made to us. It’s not personal, and our sole motivation is ensuring the welfare and wellbeing of any animals involved.

Wherever possible our officers give advice and assistance to improve animal welfare, including allowing people time to make improvements to standards of care. But this is not always possible or appropriate.

Best regards
Sarah

When in doubt

When in doubt, ask the RSPCA! The best resource (better than Google!!) for trusted animal care, welfare and information that you can trust and rely on. I needed to get guidance on a new pet purchase. There are so many animal farms and scammers that it is hard to know who to trust and fortunately I had the foresight to ask for help. The RSPCA have got such little resources, are stretched beyond their means yet they took the time to give me all the help I needed. They were fast, helpful, kind and friendly. My experience was absolutely amazing and I only wish they got more recognition for the hard work they do for poor little animals (and us). Biggest shout out and hugest thanks. I appreciate you!!

Useless Advice

Theres a poor homeless cat living outside a lowrise flat near my daughter. Long story as short as possible. The residents are trying to find it a home but it has a chip. The owners cant/won't be contacted. But despite this no sanctuary will take him. I contacted the rspca on Instagram to ask the law. Asking has he got to be homeless for the rest of his life because he's chipped, even though he's obviously been abandoned or is there a time scale that say after so long he can be rehomed and his details changed in his chip. The reply was completely off topic. Suggesting we phone cats protection. I msgd again explaining again but had another useless reply.
I appreciate everything the rspca does for animals. All my family and myself donate monthly. But im really upset by their useless advice and response. It's like you're talking to a machine not an animal professional.

Hi Julia,

Firstly I’d like to thank you for showing such kindness in seeking help for the cat but we’re very sorry to hear that you found the advice you received from the RSPCA unhelpful.

So that we may look into this for you please could you fill in our complaints form which can be found here:

I’d like to also thank you for the generous donations from yourself and your family to support our vital work for animal welfare. Without the support of generous members of public like you, we would not be able to rescue and rehabilitate as many animals as we do and so i’d like to share some of the wide ranging work that we have been able to achieve in 2024:

- We received 977,834 calls to our National Control Centre
- Our officers dealt with 111,654 welfare incidents
- 27,863 welfare notices and advice were given out by our officers advising people that their animals' care needed improvement
- RSPCA centres took into their care 50,683 animals
- 7,456 wild animals were admitted to our wildlife centres
- 64,118 animals were neutered
- 29,954 animals were microchipped
- 83,106 treatments were dispensed (excluding neutering)
- We secured 822 convictions in the magistrates courts and 85 convictions in the Crown courts.

We hope to hear from you soon so that we may look into your complaint

Wish I could give it less than one star

Wish I could give it less than one star. An officer finally came out about abuse and neglect I had reported in regards to several cats. The officer explained they had been to this house several times and she knows that lady at said house feeds her cats bread, pot noodles and rice pudding but it’s still food so hey ho. She told me I wasting my time by reporting to the RSPCA as the only time they might confiscate animals is if I can get video evidence of someone kicking or punching an animal. Not really living up to your name as the RSPCA, not preventing cruelty are we? Please everyone stop donating to them, they do nothing, it’s the small local rescues that do all the work and pick up their slack!

Hi Hannah,

I’m really sorry to hear that you feel you’re wasting your time reporting your concerns to the RSPCA.

Please know that we always do our best, but as a charity, our powers are limited. We can only take action if the law has been breached, even if we personally disagree with how an animal is being kept.

I have many videos

I have many videos
Of my neighbour physically abusing his dogs and the rspca cannot take action u less they let my neighbour know where the video is from and who sent it to them.
I was told by rspca staff that the dogs are clearly abused but had to give to dogs back to
The abusive owner as I would not give them permission to share my videos with my neighbour.

Hi Rob,

Thank you for your review. I’m really sorry to hear that you were unable to get in touch with us when you called the RSPCA for assistance with an injured owl.

Each year we receive around one million calls from the public on the National Control Centre’s 0300 123 8960 number and it's essential that we prioritise reports of cruelty, suffering and neglect.

The telephone system has been invaluable in helping with this, ensuring that calls are sent along the most appropriate and quickest routes depending on their nature and offering advice to callers on some commonly asked questions so our call handlers are more available to answer calls regarding more serious incidents.

In this instance, you should have been able to choose an option to speak with a call handler and I'm sorry that this was not clear. If you would like us to look into your call please do fill in our complaints form and provide your telephone number and the date of your call.

Your can find the form here:

DO NOT GIVE YOUR MONEY TO THESE MONSTERS!

I told them about a landlord who had admitted in writing to feeding my cat a common allergen behind my back. The landlord was very candid about this because he apparently fed the same thing to his own cat fairly often. My cat had an underlying condition that was clearly exacerbated by the food poisoning caused. He died shortly afterwards. When I alerted the RSPCA to the fact that this man was feeding his cat and perhaps several others (he collects stray cats) food that they were likely allergic to either through ignorance or malice, they told me they were unable to do anything without confirmation from a vet. As stated, my cat had an underlying condition so naturally this is something that vets would have focused on in their assessment. Regardless, I was particularly vulnerable to my landlord's actions because I was unable to afford an autopsy much less the adequate treatment my own cat would have needed. Of course, this isn't even really about my cat who has already died but rather my landlord's future victims - cats who may die because the RSPCA cares more about money than it does about animals! These people are despicable and completely undeserving of the reputation they have with the wider public - NEVER GIVE THEM YOUR MONEY!

Poor response to dog suffering cruelty

Here is yet another organisation with an incompetent Executive built around diversity, not doing or able to do the job they are meant to do. But I’m sure they all get well paid and that’s all they really matters. Except that I’m aware of a dog that is kept in poor cramped conditions, not walked, or loved, and is in stress. A case of cruelty and neglect. I go to the RSPCA website to reach out for help for this unfortunate suffering animal, and after several clicks I’m told to report the matter to the council. So what is the point of the RSPCA?

just another money grabbing racket

Absolute joke. They're not interested in helping animals, all they want is your money to boost the salaries of their top people and have flash offices and websites that hardly work.
I contacted them on 2 occasions about pigeons with brokem wings. No help whatsoever no advice apart from telling me to take them to the vet. I don't have a car. I'm 84 . am I suppose to walk to the vets. No advice on who else to call.
I called them about a baby deer entangled in wire. They were not interested either. A dog with a limp and a bloody leg on the road. Not interesting enough I guess.
What do they rescue ? pampered pooches who have lost their designer clothes or chipped a toe nail? that woul surely bring a decent donation

Hi Henri,

Thank you for your review and for seeking help for animals in need on multiple occasions, it is clear how passionate you are about animal welfare. But I am really sorry to hear how you feel after your experiences contacting the RSPCA.

If you reported any of these animal welfare concerns to us in the last three months please do get in touch using our website’s complaints form so we can look into your complaint. You’ll find the form here:

https://www.rspca.org.uk/utilities/contactus/complaints/form

It may be helpful to explain that when animals are in urgent need of help we’re asking the public to take certain animals such as small birds to vets themselves so they may be helped as quickly as possible. We have limited resources and there are just 200 rescuers on duty each day across the whole of England and Wales, so we have to try and free up our frontline staff to enable them to respond to more reports of cruelty and neglect, situations that no one else can deal with.

As a charity that covers all species across England and Wales, sadly we can't get to every single animal in time, so we do rely on the public and other organisations to help when we can't.

If someone is unable to take an animal to the vet themselves, we recommend that they ask if friends, family or neighbours can assist or to ask on social media to see if there is someone else who may be able to help, such as another animal lover. If none of those are possible we’d advise that they reach out to other charities such as wildlife rehabilitation centres. We have advice for how to locate your closest one on our website here:

https://www.rspca.org.uk/adviceandwelfare/wildlife/rescuecentre.

I’d like to reassure you that everyone at the RSPCA works here because we care deeply about animals and want to improve their welfare and thanks to the generous donations of members of the public in 2024:

-Our frontline officers were able to respond to 82,490 welfare incidents
-Our dedicated animal centres were able to take into their care 47,966 animals
-Our wildlife centres admitted 10,094 wild animals for rehabilitation

I hope this information is helpful

With best wishes,
Emma

RSPCA Ceredigion branch

RSPCA Ceredigion branch

Would not re-home a cat to a double income no children couple because the cat would be totally indoors. Apparently cats are totally wild animals that deserve to go outside and be hit by cars because that's them living life to the fullest.
Cats are domesticated animals, you don't adopt out foxes and badgers because they don't rely on a human being to keep them alive - cats rely on humans to feed and care for them because the human race domesticated them.
How can a charity be crying out for help and turn down the perfect candidates, my existing cat has his own bedroom in my 4 bedroom property that I own - with it's own garden that we plan to build a catio in.
Absolutely abhorrent and archaic views that are laughably outdated.
Wouldn't want to adopt from them even if they begged at this point because they clearly have no idea what they're talking about.
Shocking.

Thanks for your review Charlotte although I’m sorry to read how disappointed you’ve been at not being able to adopt a cat from RSPCA Ceredigion Branch. I believe our Service Complaints Team has now been in touch about contacting the Branch direct to express your concern. It's a separately registered charity to the national RSPCA which has this Trustpilot page and each of our branches have slightly different policies about the requirements to rehome an animal.

Thank you for wanting to adopt a cat from the RSPCA and please keep an eye on the website’s Find a Pet page because sometimes cats are advertised there wanting an indoor only home:

Was not willing to donate

Was willing to donate because I love dogs. But after reading all the absolutely appalling reviews - I can only assume my money will be going to line the pockets of those in the employ / directorate of the RSPCA, and not the precious dogs I intend it for. Goodbye then! No cash from ME here! What an absolute disgrace this organisation seems to be from all the reviews I read about it. Very sad

Waste of time reporting as they don't care at all!

Clearly this "charity" who cares so much about animals welfare wants to see them in shelters or in terrible conditions/treatment. After all, without that they wouldn't exist or need to put their "desperate pleas" on TV to miss lead us into giving money. They really don't give a dam when you try to report something.

Made contact via the online chat about illegal breeding and conditions from a property close by.
Karl, who I was speaking to couldn't be bothered to collect further details or information. Told me to check if they were a registered breeder as she would be classed as a business, to which I told him no they wasn't as you can't run a business from a council property. He then said I had to contact the council for them to deal with first.

Absolute joke of a so called animal protection, supposed to be able to report animal abuse and neglect ha! They don't give a care in the world.
Even after saying they're breeding to fund addictions, not one flicker of care.

I'm sure they're sleeping well, thinking up of the next tear jerking advert to pump on our TV over Christmas showing all of the so called "hard work they do".

It may be helpful to explain that we recommend contacting Trading Standards or the local council as they are best placed to investigate low welfare dog breeders as they’re responsible for the licensing of breeders. If they visit and find concerns they contact us directly if our support is required.

We’d like to reassure you that we really try our very best to help as many animals as possible, but with nearly a million calls to us in 2024 alone, we just can’t help all of them all of the time. As a charity we have limited resources, with around 360 officers across the whole of England and Wales. Lost their way - donate elsewhere

The problems with the Farm Assured scheme already deeply concerned me but contacting the emergency line today was the nail in the coffin for my support of the RSPCA. The employee on the helpline plainly could not care less about a desperately ill fox. When I described how distressing it was he said 'yeah....no worries' - he wasn't even listening to what I was saying.
Not being able to help is one thing but there appears to be a total collapse in values at the RSPCA. This is not about one individual - it's clear from policy decision too that they just do not care very much about animals anymore. The 10k I left them as a legacy will be removed when my will is next changed. They need to realise there are consequences for running a charity so detached from its core objectives.

Hi Abigail,

Thank you for showing such care and compassion for the ill fox and trying to seek help for it. I'm saddened to read about your disappointment following your experience reporting the fox to the RSPCA.

We’d really like you to get in touch on our service complaints form so that we can look into how your call was handled. Please do fill out the form which you’ll find at:

https://www.rspca.org.uk/utilities/contactus/complaints/form

I’d like to reassure you that we do our very best to help as many animals as possible, but with 907,797 calls in 2024 alone, we can’t help every single one and we sadly have to make difficult decisions to prioritise our resources. There are hundreds of other charities out there also doing as much as they can but, sadly, we're all under incredible pressure and only have limited resources.

We hope to hear from you soon so that we may look into your call

With best wishes
Emma

So when does cruelty mean cruelty?

This 'charity' has a get-out clause/excuse not to investigate reports of cruelty. I have contacted them 3 times in the last year with reports of obvious cruelty. The reasons given to not visit are ridiculous. I have cancelled my monthly direct debit and redirect this to a more efficient and proactive organisation.

Hi Pippa,

Firstly I’d like to thank you for all your previous support of the RSPCA and all of the animals you have helped us to care for. I’m truly sorry to hear that you have a complaint about the RSPCA after reporting an animal you’re concerned about.

Everyone working at the RSPCA cares deeply about animals and our frontline rescuers spend their days driving from one job to another. We do wish we could respond to every animal who needs our help, but we have to prioritise reports carefully and make difficult decisions so that our highly-trained inspectors can attend quickly to those animals who need our specialist support the most.

If you’d like to submit a complaint so that we can look into this further please do get in touch by filling in our complaints form which can be found here:

With best wishes,

Emma

They do not care about animals!!

On the 2nd September my neighbour got a 3 month old kitten out of another neighbours bungalow as he was left in a small carrier sitting in his own urine and faeces for 2 weeks 24 hours a day and the food in his bowl was absolutely rotten. I took a picture of the kitten straight away and then rang the rspca to report her. I was sat in my garden with that kitten after my neighbour bathed him twice (his fur stained with urine) for 6 hours waiting for an rspca officer to ring me. I even made a complaint on their website. After 6pm I had to bring the kitten in and put him in my bathroom with a tray, bed, food and water. 3 days he was in my bathroom, me still ringing the rspca. I decided to take him to animals in distress and explained to them that I couldn't look after him as he attacked my kitten when I actually bought that little boy as a playmate but he only lasted 12 hours so the neighbour who I thought I could trust after she told me she worked with animals in the past took him. The poor thing was riddled with fleas, was severely malnourished and his legs and belly were stained yellow due to the urine. He obviously couldn't sleep in the tiny crate cz when I put my boy's igloo bed in the bathroom he got in it and slept all night, practically all the time for them 3 days. A guy at animals in distress (didn't get his name) also works for the rspca part time but I still slagged them off. He said they were full ao couldn't take him but still give him flea and worm treatment as I had no money at all. I was starting to leave with the kitten not knowing what to do with him when the guy came running out and said that a volunteer would take him. I was so glad and relieved as I knew he would get the treatment he seriously needed and be loved and cared for. I did ring the rspca when I got back to update them and sent emails again to complaints. They said an officer will contact me when they are done with their caseload. They're not bothered because the kitten is safe now. That isn't the point though. That woman still severely neglected him, kept him locked in tiny cage 24 hours a day for 2 weeks, didn't even feed him. She put adult cat food in his bowl, I gave her whiskas dry food which my neighbour give me back after getting the kitten out of there and that hadn't even been touched. She has an adult cat who isn't even vaccinated, that cat could have cancer or anything and would die because she would never take him to the vet. I even offered to lay half for that kittens pack at irlam animal clinic which I got for my little boy and he's fully vaccinated, not one flea on him, properly nutritioned and the happiest kitten I've ever known and I have severe mental health issues, rheumatoid arthritis, depression, anxiety and suicidal ideation and still do absolutely everything for my little boy cz I cannot fail him like I failed my dog cz losing him broke my heart. That woman is lucky I haven't done anything to get justice for that little boy. The rspca are an absolute waste of space!! Noone has contacted me at all in over a month!! Do they really think I'm ever going to forget what she did?! and what they have done?! NO!! They kill animals like the social kill kids!!
