Silverwood Cars should be avoided
What I am posting here is 100% true first-hand experience.
I bought a car from Silverwood Cars in late January 2023. I knowingly paid over the odds because the description of it on their website led me to believe that it was the best of its kind. I travelled 600 miles (total) to collect it. I was told, at point-of-sale, that there was a 6-month warranty provided. When I left Silverwood Cars that day in my new car, I was satisfied.
Things went wrong very quickly. On the journey home I detected a smell of what I thought was oil or possibly petrol coming through the air vents. At first I thought it was my imagination. The next day, as I drove the car, I noticed it again, only this time I knew it wasn't my imagination because my two passengers noticed it as well, and I apologised for the smell. I had to drive with the windows open despite this being late January.
Then, on what I think was Day Two, or possibly Day Three, the car would not start. It was totally lifeless in every way. I telephoned Silverwood Cars who advised me to join the RAC, so I took that advice. The RAC mechanic came to my home to examine the battery, conducted some tests on it, and told me it should be replaced. The RAC price was rather high (c. £230) for a new battery and the mechanic accepted that I could buy the same model locally for notably less. I planned to go to a local battery retailer the next day. When I did that, taking the battery out and driving in a different car, the retailer thought there might be a chance that the battery could be restored to good health, so I left it with them for 2 days while they recharged it and tested it.
While this was happening, I received an email from the RAC offering me a free 'Vehicle Health Check' at a local RAC-registered garage. I decided to accept that offer. I collected the now re-charged battery , re-installed it in my car, and drove to the garage for the Vehicle Health Check.
When that was completed 24 hours later, the diagnosis was that there was, indeed, an oil leak. The very least that the garage could assess was that the car needed new rocker cover gaskets because oil was leaking onto the exhaust manifolds. There was also a serious leak in the water filler tank, such that there was effectively no cooling to the engine at all. I booked the car in to have all these problems fixed, and more if any were found.
Prior to taking the car in for repairs, I contacted Silverwood Cars who said that none of the problems I described would be covered by their warranty. I asked who the provider of the warranty was, and Silverwood Cars told me that they had previously used Warranty Plus but due to problems that they did not elaborate upon, they terminated the relationship and now provided their own 'in-house' warranty service. I telephoned Warranty Plus, who said that they had never had any kind of relationship with Silverwood Cars. They said that they had heard of the company, but at no time had they provided warranty facilities for them. Evidently, Silverwood Cars lied about this point.
Later, the car was taken to the RAC-approved local garage which kept it for the better part of two weeks. In addition to replacing the rocker cover gaskets, they had to replace the exhaust manifold gaskets as well. Another necessary job was replacing all of the spark plugs, mainly because they were not matching - some were BMW, others were NGK. The engine is a 4.4 litre V8 and none of the spark plugs matched the official specification. The header tank was replaced. The garage had no doubt that none of the faults that they found could be put down to 'wear and tear' given that I had driven the car for less than 350 miles and within 2 days. They stated in writing that all of the faults must have been in existence at the time of collection of the car. Silverwood Cars claimed that the car had undergone a pre-delivery inspection, but my local garage commented that this seemed highly unlikely, or at least any PDI was negligent and careless.
The repair costs were in excess of £2,000. Silverwood Cars have point-blank refused to cover this as part of the warranty they claimed was provided.
I am in the process of taking legal action against Silverwood Cars in Gateshead.
In summary, I strongly advise anyone thinking of buying a car from Silverwood Cars to avoid that company altogether, and look for a dealer of integrity. I do believe that such second-hand car dealers exist, but Silverwood Cars is clearly not one of them, based on my personal experience.
