Professional hearing care at Specsavers Chelmsford.

During 2024 I had occasion to visit Specsavers hearing dept in Chelmsford twice.
The first visit was to get a hearing aid repaired . The audiologist who saw me was most thorough in checking the defective hearing aid and my ears before replacing the wire connecting the earpiece to the main unit.
The second visit was to measure my hearing using a sound proof box where I sat and was exposed to a range of tones. Then my hearing aids were tuned to my current level of hearing. I was very impressed by the care and detailed analysis of my hearing results. The audiologist, Lorelle took me through a series of options and answered my many questions.
All of the above was done without charge and I was reminded to get my ears checked annually again all part of the package from Specsavers .
I have used other private companies to purchase hearing aids in the past but none come close to the service I received at Specsavers, Chelmsford.

Dissatisfied with almost all aspects of my experience

I bought my specsavers Advance hearings aids early in 2022 for aroung £1500. After returning to the store many times, they adjusted them to what they thought was as good as it gets. They did have a tinnitus masker. To all intents and purposes it was totally ineffective as the aids were incapable of being adjusted to help my hearing loss at higher ranges without resulting in severe echoing and hissing.
I kept going back. One of the aids was particularly useless, so they said they'd replace the battery. The one good thing is that they realised the whole unit needed replacing and did so. The other aid had never properly worked (I did wonder if both had been returned/re-serviced and then sold as new. I did mention that possibility and it was denied as being even a remote possibility). The result is that this original aid takes almost 2x as long to charge.
I have in fact only worn them occasionally, especially after one experience (actually on my way back from a visit to Specsavers!) where it made my tinnitus so bad that I do not know how I would have coped with life if things had not gone back to normal after around 10 days when I think my brain might have tuned out of the new, constantly piercing racket. I have kept going back to have them re-adjusted, but basically they say there is nothing more they can do.
Finally and in what must be one of the biggest branches in the country where I was "matched" to the aids I had chosen, there was (and as far as I know still is) only one - part-time- audiologist for me to see... (and yes, I've bought my glasses there for a very long time, but that's another story..)

Referred here as an NHS patient…

Referred here as an NHS patient. So far two failures in first month of usage of their standard NHS hearing aids - the electronic units are ok, it is the plastic tubes that ‘kink’ and stop the units working. Requires a trip to the store … no issue getting replacements but no help with a couple of spares, will not even sell you the spares. You are stuffed any time you have a failure and they are epically unhelpful. Suspect they are using NHS patients as a source of private business so the more frustrated the NHS patient is, the more chance they have of picking up a new private patient … except their unhelpful attitude would have me go anywhere other than SpecSavers.

Hearing aids

Didn't seem very knowledgeable, didn't inform me to build up usage time on aids. The aids sound tinny and couldn't hear very well when wearing them went back to shop, said she had turned them up for me still no difference. Wasn't impressed with the customer service, they weren't very concerned or helpful

My mother was told she had blocked ears. On attending and paying for her ears to be unblocked by Specsavers she dismissed by a rude lady who told her there was no wax in her ears. There was no refund!
Mum is still experiencing hearing difficulties so I took her to a different place who immediately confirmed that they could not do a hearing test as due to old blocked wax they could not test. Mum is now paying another company again for wax removal. The consultant Mum saw at Specsavers was rude and dismissive. I would not recommend.

Excellent service from Briony

I had a hearing test 5 years ago which revealed a weakness in my left ear, though not serious enough to necessitate hearing aids. Recently, comments from my family suggested the time had come seriously to consider the need for assisted hearing. I checked online to see my options and decided to opt for Specsavers, even though it meant going to Wrexham as my local branch doesn't have an audiology department at the moment.
Briony, who dealt with me, was cheerily efficient and informative. The initial tests showed further decline in my hearing, although still not very serious. We agreed that hearing aids would be an advantage and Briony explained the range available. I made my selection there and then and made an appointment to go back a week later to collect my aids.
The second appointment involved dewaxing of my ears before trying the aids and being instructed how to look after them. Briony also installed an app on my phone so that I can adjust volume, tone and direction on the aids if I need to, e.g. when my wife was having a Whatsapp video session with daughter and grandson!
It's now been 4 days since I acquired the aids and I am pleasantly surprised how easily I have adjusted to them. They are light to wear and very unobtrusive. I am very satisfied with everything about Specsavers and its product, but particularly the ease and efficiency of my consultations with Briony.

My First Private Hearing Aids

After years of having NHS hearing aids I found that they were no longer up to the job. I decided to give Specsavers top of the range private ones a try with no risk as they have a 100 day money back guarantee. So far so good, I'm very impressed with the difference they make, I no longer need the subtitles on the TV. I also received excellent service from their Whitely branch.

Writing this for my father InLaw

Writing this for my father InLaw,
1, £100 replacement fee even though they are NHS acquired and local NHS service charge £65 for replacements.
2, you can't order and pay for a second pair.
3, handed in for repair the week before Christmas and still waiting to have them back. So left through Christmas and new year with no hearing aid.
4, no one answers the telephone at Wolverhampton shop even though someone is at the desk just an answer machine machine and they return call.

Can't undertsand why these were given the NHS contract.
Not happy with the service they provide

Get used to them!

My first pair of hearing aids (NHS ones) were from Romsey Specsavers (Yes they were working from there then but are now at Totton) and were by Seimens. I had these for over six years with very few problems. Eventually as the sound was getting a little distorted I felt it was time to change these for a new pair.
The new ones were obtained on 6th August and were problematical from the word 'Go' the left earpiece keeps falling out while the right one was too tight a fit- so much so that it irritated my ear causing a build-up of earwax. I contacted Totton Specsavers Audiologist but was told as my Title says-"You'll get used to them." In fact I've been back to other branches with the same answer. One branch (no name) the receptionist was helping out out a middle aged lady and "sucking up to her" but when it was my turn her first question was "Private or NHS?". Her attitude change was apparent!!
In addition, when I requested an ear wax removal last October the earliest date was February. I can have this done in Winchester or Salisbury at other Audoligists within two weeks! So what's the problem? Unfortunately this Company has the franchise for NHS Hearing Aids, so I am told. In that case someone in the NHS should be checking up on them. Finally I'm glad I never paid for my Hearing Aids or it would be a waste of my Old Age Pension which I could not afford to do. Now reluctantly, I will have to do just that but it will not be at Specsavers Audiololigists. I won't let Specsavers know about my review as they already know how I feel about them!

Most disappointed with their BOGOF on specs. Nowhere did it state you could only have 2 pairs the same. I selected my frames as per my Specsavers prescription, I required one pair close up & one pair distant. So this offer did not apply to me!! PLEASE MAKE IT CLEAR ON YOUR SIGNAGE THAT BOGOF ONLY APPLIES TO PURCHASING TWO PAIRS WITH THE SAME LENSES. Shame on you!!

My wife and I are both in our…

My wife and I are both in our seventies.
My wife has arthritis in her left knee which makes it difficult and painful to walk even short distances especially if there are stairs involved.
We did visit Specsavers in Llandudno about fifteen years ago and had our eyes tested and got new glasses for distance as well as reading glasses.
That all went well.
This time we booked a home visit and two people came to our house and tested our eyes and then selected the frames.
We were charged £701.00 for four pairs of glasses. Distance and reading for each of us.
I was talking to a lady at the DWP and she told me to check with Specsavers if they'd given us the discounts we were entitled to because she thought the prices were too high.
Contacted them and they apologised and took £64.00 off the cost which they refunded.
Six weeks later one of the two people came to our house with our new glasses.
We tried them on and everything seemed fine at the time.
I then noticed that my distance glasses were a bit lopsided and didn't look quite right.
I also noticed that my wife was doubling up on her new glasses when texting on her phone because she couldn't see the text properly because it was slightly blurred with just her new reading glasses.
I told her that was defeating the object of having new glasses.
I contacted Specsavers about my glasses and told them about my wife's reading glasses.
They booked us in for someone to revisit us.
Took a few phone calls before we eventually got someone out about two weeks later.
The chap who came out let us know from the start that he was in a hurry and very busy!
I explained the problem with my distance glasses, but he couldn't see or understand what I meant.
I put my new reading glasses on and said they looked symmetrical, but he thought they looked exactly the same.
He said that because I'd broken my nose in the past that might be the problem.
I got my old glases out and showed him that they sat perfectly on my face.
He took my new glasses and bent the nose pads slightly and that evened them out a bit and made them look more even, but a week later and they're more or less back to looking lopsided!
As to my wife's reading glasses he told her she needed to get used to them and not keep doubling up.
We could tell he wasn't interested and wanted to be on his way.
I'm extremely dissatisfied with the service and lack of aftercare.
If this is Specsavers home visits for people who can't get to one of their high street outlets then they should be ashamed of themselves.
I've been generous and given them two stars when in actual fact I should have given them one star!

Service I didn’t expect

My hearing aid end broke off over the week end, this morning (9 dec 24) I went to my local spec savers, in Morrisons, Lincoln, without an appointment, and received the best service anyone could receive, not only did the young lady renew both hearing tubes & ear grommets, she supplied me with fine cleaning rods, all while I waited, what a pleasant can do attitude, and an absolute credit to spec savers.

Specsavers audiology have no clue about aftersales service. If you buy an expensive hearing aid or you are NHS you will receive the same dire service.
They should sit down with their excellent optician staff and learn about customer service.

Hearing aid choice

During my audiology appointment I particularly asked for small silver hearing aids but was told that only grey or pink plastic ones are available on the NHS. This is not true. Silver hearing aids are available on the NHS - just don’t go to Specsavers.
