Dissapointed Tado user…

Dissapointed Tado home assistant user here. Tado API limits are clearly meant to limit users and force them to use paywall features after already paying premium prices for subpar hardware (I've had some fail, connections are flaky etc.)

> Queue condescending template response about never promising APIs, "having" to shut it down due to high-rate users etc. People are not stupid, this is an overleveraged venture-funded company chasing recurring revenues that doesn't care about paying customers that are not interested in subscription paywall features.

Hello Jeroen,

We are sorry to hear that you feel this way, and that the options offered at hand don't meet your needs either; however, at the moment, there is sadly nothing we can do to change these aspects for you.

If you want a company that will…

If you want a company that will eventually lock all their functionality behind a monthly subscription then tado is the product for you. Best part is it's your thermostat so you can either pay up, or pay to swap companies. Lol

Edit, since they responded; take a look at what the basics features are, you might as well just buy a manual thermostat. If everything that makes a smart thermostat "smart" is locked behind a subscription then you literally just offer a subscription service for a smart thermostat.

Also just so it's absolutely clear, I've been using them for a year, then suddenly I've been rate limited for no reason.

Hello,

Please note that the subscription we offer is intended to go beyond the standard smart control and smart scheduling, allowing you to fully automate your heating, while leaving the rest available for everyone. Therefore, the additional features our subscription offers are optional, meaning not necessary for the basic usage of the tado° system. In addition to that, the already existing customers are never affected by later changes; nothing gets locked for them.

Kind regards,
Your tado° team

Tado has gone down hill more and more…

Tado has gone down hill more and more each year. I spent thousands changing our heating system to use Tado equipment, only slowly for it to move behind a paywall, and not even a cheap paywall!

They've now reduced their API usage to 100 calls a day, which they claim for fair usage, but 100 on a heating system is barely enough to do anything, I'm only trying to check it's working periodically throughout the day because I have signal issues - but even this small use case quickly eats 100 calls.

I wish I'd stayed with Honeywell, and will never move to their version 3 if they don't start making good.

Hello Ben,

While never officially supported for third parties, we’ve historically left our REST API open and unrestricted. We believe in fair use, and we intend to continue supporting that principle.

Our involvement in implementing this limitation is an exceptional need, as we have experienced a small fraction of very frequent API users creating a disproportionately high share of our server expenses.

If you can't optimize your setup to work within the generous limit for non-paying users, you have the option of using the subscription or one of the officially supported integrations we offer.

Great, reliable, easy-to-install heating control system.

I am using TADO Wireless Smart Thermostat V3+for almost two years now, and it has proven to be great solution. The system (Wireless Temperature Sensor + Internet Bridge + Wireless Thermostat) was easy to install by myself, and although I ended up getting the malfunctioning Wireless Temperature Sensor, the issue has been quickly resolved with Tado support and new sensor was delivered.
Since then everything works great, and the system is easy to monitor and control via Tado app.
The only thing that I don't like is that you need to pay for the full version of the app. After making such significant purchase for getting the devices, it would make sense that the app is entirely free, as it was in the past.

API user not happy

Whilst never advertising as a company that offers API support, that was the only reason I bought tado in the first place after a lot of research, because the option was there to connect to home assistant.
This decision is a stab in the back to all the customers who use their API and after all the money I’ve spent it just seems greedy asking me now to pay monthly for the very few features I needed.
I’ve already spent nearly a grand!

I hope they reconsider this decision or at least limit it to 5000 requests per day 100 is useless.

Another option would be to give us local api over an update, something to think about to keep your current customers happy and avoid all this bad criticism no?

Hello Billy,

Thank you very much for your input. Please know that our involvement in implementing this limitation is an exceptional need, as we have experienced a small fraction of very frequent API users creating a disproportionately high share of our server expenses. Therefore, at this very moment, there is unfortunately nothing we can do to change these aspects for you.

The reason we offer you the choice between a subscription and one of our officially supported integrations is that we can meet the needs of our customers either way, should they be unable to optimize their configuration to work within the generous limit for non-paying users.

I love it

I love it! I had a wireless thermostat in my last house but it didn't come with an app. I love that I can adjust it so easily from my phone, my ability to schedule several different times during the day, although the scheduler can be a bit fiddly sometimes, and all the AI perks.

Used to be okay.

Was okay, but now their API usage limits are in place I'll be switching products to something with a local API. Can't recommend them anymore.

Edit: Before I get a template response about the API never being a documented feature. I kind of understand that, but you haven't handled the situation well enough. I received no advance communication about the change. You have introduced a rate limit for free accounts which is far too low. You should have released an update to allow local control via the bridge/hub,

Tadoº Experience

The instructions made switching from the old Honeywell controller to the Tadoº unit very straightforward and the wireless connectivity allowed us to locate the room thermostat in an Ideal position which hadn't been possible with the old wired unit....and of course there's the App which not only gives us remote control, but with its geofencing function automatically switches the heating on/off depending upon our proximity to home.

Tado products are worthless since they limited free API calls to a ridiculous 100 per day. They push you to a subscription service to have basic use of their products. AVOID!

Have used Tado X for a year now.

Have used Tado X for a year now.
All in all a great experience with Tado. We have 5 Tado X thermostats so far. Some automatic features are locked behind a paywall, sad, but to be expected honestly.
Worst part for me though is the Matter connection feature. Can't get it to work. Possibly a user error on my part.

Tado used to be an pretty good company

Tado used to be an pretty good company. Unfortunatly they changed their terms after selling their product. Their product apparently is very badly designed an needs API calls for things that could be handled locally. Instead of fixing this and allowing their software to handle basic things like changing the temperature or turning off a radiator locally they now want to charge people money for this.

The effects of this are now that anyone using their API calls, which was always open, for use in other products like Home Assistant, have now been limited to non-functional unless an AI subscription is bought. Causing external integrations of Tado with other smart home devices to not work anymore unless you pay. For example, Tado is exceptionally bad at detecting open windows (part of their paid subscription). Using Home Assistant or other smart home hubs with open window sensors this can easily be automated to turn off your tado radiator if a window is opened. But not anymore, because now they want you to pay for the previously free service. Basically forcing you to take a subscription. While none of this should have triggerd any calls to an online service in the first place. Why does turning off a radiator valve go through the internet? Esp. when they sells very expensive hubs, values and routers.

Long-term customer forced to leave due to API restrictions

I have been a long standing Tado customer and have invested significantly in their ecosystem, including multiple TRVs, wireless sensors, receiver and bridge. The system has been integrated with Home Assistant and working reliably for years.

Tado have recently introduced strict API rate limits which effectively break third-party integrations unless you subscribe to their paid Auto-Assist plan. The free API limit is now so low that normal home automation polling quickly exceeds it, rendering the system unreliable or unusable for anyone running an advanced smart home setup.

This change has been imposed after customers have already invested heavily in hardware. There was no viable grandfathering, and no meaningful local API alternative provided for advanced users.

The hardware itself works well. The issue is the shift towards locking customers into subscriptions and restricting open integration.

For users who rely on Home Assistant or other smart home platforms, this change fundamentally alters the value proposition. Unfortunately, I will now have to migrate away from Tado despite the significant sunk cost.

I would strongly advise prospective buyers who value open integration and long term platform stability to consider this carefully before committing.
