Profit over trust — disappointing policy change from TechSmith

After years of selling perpetual licenses with maintenance plans, the reason I bougjt it, TechSmith moved to an opaque subscription model. Customer support ignored clear questions, replied with empty phrases. Another U.S. company putting profit over trust. The software was not the best in class, but the company’s attitude clearly converts customers into losers.

We're moving to a subscription-only model for Snagit 2025 and Camtasia 2025 to provide more continuous innovation and release new features as they're ready, rather than waiting for major annual releases.

We're offering a significant discount for existing customers with active maintenance agreements to thank them for their loyalty. As long as your maintenance is active, you'll receive a Business License key for subscription access to the latest version at a savings of over 60% compared to a new subscription.

You will always have access to previously purchased perpetual versions of our software. However, version 2025 does require an active subscription to use.

I apologize if our customer support did not answer your questions clearly. We're committed to putting our customers first and I'm sorry we failed to do so in your case.

Make your narrative complete

I have used TechSmith Snag-it for decades and I find it indispensable for composing and editing stories and reports. It allows you to easily place the details necessary to add that finishing touch.

The information is available- with considerable time delay

The information is available - with a considerable time delay. I really miss the previous way that is conducive for customers. The fact that we are paying for a service that is delayed is disappointing.

Finally Run smooth

Camtasia is a very user friendly software, each time i use it i learn more about its many possibilities.
I run it with mac m4 chip so its pretty smooth no bugs…. Which i was experiencing before with my intel processor.

Resolving my issue from your help desk was great.

What i don't like is that 2024, is the end of the perpetual license.

Your chat tech was very helpful

Your chat tech was very helpful. Explained that you no longer offer perpetual Snagit licensing and quickly helped get me up and running again. I do wish TechSmith would reconsider offering perpetual licensing. I would gladly pay 2 to 3 times the yearly subscription cost for perpetual.

Customer service is the bomb firstly. I trust your company over pretty much all other editors that I've used. Love how you keep us in the loop with changes and upgrades. Best educational library as well. Not much I would change at the moment.

I had a fairly simple licensing question

I had a fairly simple question. One might argue that it should have been in the FAQs. I initiated a support chat. The tech got on in less than a minute and quickly answered the question in decent English and without the annoying lag of a lot of chat support functions.

My question might have been answered on the site somewhere but it wasn't obvious.

I'm currently on an old non-subscription version (2019). [They went to a subscription model somewhere between now and 2019 so now you pay each year but each license is for two devices.]

It is a bit annoying that my licenses account and support login have to be different.

I've used Snag-it for years. I'm moving to a new Windows 11 computer and thought that maybe the snipping tool might suffice but, heh, nope!
