  1. Newspaper Publisher

Written by the company

Thetimes.co.uk hosts the digital edition of The Times, Britain’s oldest national daily newspaper, and its sister title The Sunday Times. The Times was founded in 1785 by the editor and publisher John Walter I, “to record the principal occurrences of the times” for the service of the public. It was called the Daily Universal Register for the first three years, until it rebranded as The Times in 1788 – the first newspaper in the world to use the Times name. In his first edition, John Walter I explained that “like a well-covered table, it should contain something suited to every palate” including politics, foreign affairs, matters of trade, legal trials, advertisements and “amusements”. In its tone and political neutrality, Walter reserved the right of the newspaper “to censure or applaud either [political party]” and to cover contending issues with respectful “fair argument”. More than 200 years on, these founding principles hold true today. The Times has supported both New Labour and the Conservatives in recent times and supported Remain in the 2016 EU referendum. The titles are currently the biggest selling quality print newspapers in the UK and in 2018 The Times was named Britain’s most trusted national newspaper by the Reuters Institute for Journalism at Oxford University. In 2019 The Times and The Sunday Times won the Daily and Sunday newspaper of the year categories at the British Press Awards among several other prizes for their writing, reporting, investigations and campaigns. Both papers are committed to driving digital innovation in all areas of their world-class journalism.

Terrible experience that they make you…

Terrible experience that they make you call to cancel a subscription.

When I talked to the cancellation team they were very rude and said they were not interested in my feedback as I had read one article. Probably the rudest person I have spoken to in a customer service team ever.

Terrible company

Terrible company. Dont reply to emails.
Carried on billing me £26 per month after I phoned to cancel and refuse to return calls or reply to emails. When you call them you get passed around between departments with no resolution. Avoid

I took an offer for 1GBP for 6 months…

I took an offer for 1GBP for 6 months and got charged the 1 GBP plus an additional 10. Then when I went to cancel I saw that it is super difficult, you have to call them to cancel. The experience is terrible. I am just glad I checked as soon as I did and didn't wait the 6 months as I assume I would have then been charged 60 instead of 1 GBP.

Inconsistent discount

Apart from their inexplicable policy on discounts - i subscribed without a discount, and yet my neighbour received 25%!!! When you phone them, they must have the most annoying, repetitive 'hold' music, with no option to wait in silence. Aaaaaarrrrgghhhhh

No warning before the charge you £26 for a full price subscription!

Be careful! No warning that your discounted period is ending. ythey will just spring on you the hefty charge of £26 per month.
They make it very hard to cancel. Cannot be done online. You have to ring a number and jump through many hoops to cancel.
Shame on you for not sending a courtesy email a few days before full price renewal!

Really poor experience dealing with…

Really poor experience dealing with customer service on what was initially a payment issue. This needed to be resolved by phoning their helpline after an extended period owing to delayed responses by email. As an apology a 6 month discount was offered.
Subsequently found out that the issue hadn’t been resolved and in effect had a parallel account with Apple Store which meant the discount could not be applied.
Wasted over 2 hours with little support provided and very patchy performance overall.

BEWARE

BEWARE: This company is a trap. They make it impossible to cancel.

Unable to give 0 stars.

Absolute frauds - their cancelation practice is highly likely to be illegal. I am disgusted. I signed up for a £1 trial - before the trial ended, I tried to cancel by email. This is where their predatory scheme begins.

They REFUSED my written cancellation. They claimed I had to phone them, even after I explained I was out of the country and couldn't. This is a deliberate, unethical tactic designed to trap you.

Report them to trading standards too. I have

Unable to give 0 stars

Unable to give 0 stars. Cancelled PayPal and Google pay yet still charged £30! I had 3 months for 1 pound and made sure I cancelled. Still waiting for my money back. This is theft pure and simple.

Their subscriptions department are shysters

Their subscriptions department are, in my opinion, a bunch of shysters who tell lies. My subscription was trebled without informing me. No refund. I later tried the trial offer, cancelled before the price increased but they still charged me the increased amount and refused to give a refund. Imagine 1980's double glazing cold callers, and that is who you'll be dealing with when you try and cancel

NEVER SUBSCRIBE TO THE TIMES!!

NEVER SUBSCRIBE TO THE TIMES!!! I paid £1 to read one article and little did I know i was going to get charged £30 a month from then on, without any notice or invoice sent to my email. By the time I had realised i was out of pocket £90, and when i contacted customer service (a conversation which i waited an hour in a queue to have) they were unable to give me any refund despite them being able to see I had never used the service. I then went to try and cancel my subscription and the only way you can do this is by phoning them up. This is medieval. I cannot think of any other company where you cannot cancel a subscription in a few simple clicks. After being in the queue for half an hour on the phone I eventually got through to someone to cancel my subscription and was harassed with offers and questions when I had made it clear I just wanted to cancel. I can see from other reviews I am not the only person who has experienced this. I’m appalled that such a “reputable” company are getting away with this. Not giving notices of subscriptions, and having such a high subscription fee, as well as having to phone up to cancel a subscription is just an unheard of practice for a good company. I will definitely never be reading a Times article again.

Gutted

Gutted, didn't receive any warning my trial was coming to an end and now been slapped with a £25 payment. Really hard to speak to someone competent or understanding to cancel it. NEVER AGAIN.

Don't be seduced by short term 'free' enrolment!

Shocking experience! They clearly hope you forget you've temporarily enrolled and then make it almost impossible to cancel your policy - frankly, their approach to letting customers cancel is not far short of illegal. It is certainly immoral which distils little confidence in their attitude to news coverage.
I wouldn't go near them again.

Purchased £1 article to read…didn’t know it was signing me up to 4 months trial of £1, totally forgot about until £15 bill was charged!! No warning no way of cancelling other than calling them. Usual pressure tactics of keeping you on with them. Wouldn’t refund me either even though I didn’t want the subscription….pure greed!

Very fraudulent company

Very fraudulent company. I subscribed to read an article for £1 for 3 months. Knowing how these subscription traps usually work, I planned to cancel early to avoid being charged the outrageous £20 renewal.

After reading the article, which turned out to be pretty bland anyway, I tried to cancel right away. It took me several business days just to find the account link, and when I finally did, it barely worked. I ended up downloading the app, signing in again, and navigating to the subscription section, only to discover that I could not cancel online and had to call a number instead.

Such a dodgy setup for a mediocre news site.

After searching online, I also found that many others were hit with unexpected charges in the third month because of how poorly this system is designed. Luckily, I caught it early and canceled on the first day I subscribed. Still, a very disappointing experience. Never again.

Misleading £1 offer - Total con

I signed up with The Times to read one article for £1, thinking it was a simple one off payment or short trial. What I didn’t realise, and what wasn’t made clear enough, was that it automatically turned into a full paid subscription at £30 a few months later. There was no reminder or email notification before the payment was taken from my PayPal account, and I only found out after the money had gone. When I contacted customer service, they confirmed I hadn’t even used the service since the initial article, yet they still refused a refund. The whole setup is misleading and unfair. A company as reputable as The Times shouldn’t rely on confusing small print and automatic renewals without proper notice. This feels like A TOTAL CON! Reading other reviews, it is clear that I am not the only one caught out by this. It seems to be happening to many people, which makes it feel even more unfair and deliberate.

Very difficult to cancel this…

Very difficult to cancel this subscription. I had not realized that I had taken up the offer of £1 for 3 months then £25.99 was taken from my bank account last week. This was put through on a card number that had expired and was changed. I contacted my bank when I saw it was pending and they could not cancel it and advised me to go through to the times. I emailed them straight away and got a response that was irrelevant. Have called 5 times since and told today they can’t refund me and I have to cancel separately. I did this after holding on for so long . I am a pensioner and have a limited amount to live on each month. They said they couldn’t give me a refund even though I contacted them whilst it was pending. Good job I cancelled it they would take £25.99 every month to read this online. I didn’t even read it as I thought I had no subscription. Please avoid these offers. They do not remind you before they take this money and I think this is exactly what they expect to achieve people thinking the subscription expired only to be shocked when the money goes out of their bank account
