Prices are extortionate

We visited Vets Now with our dog out of hours. We were there less than 20 minutes and charged nearly £500, £313 of that was just for the consultation! The prices are extortionate and take advantage of pet owners who have an ill animal late at night and feel like they have no other option but to take them to be seen. We still ended up taking our dog to her regular vet the next day for actual treatment. The vet we saw wasn’t friendly or reassuring. He was rather cold and very clinical. We were also charged a £35 ‘admin fee’ because we wanted to claim on our pet insurance, this apparently is for them to provide information to the insurer. The facility was a necessity in a very scary time but In hind sight it’s a total rip off

Admin a disaster - lost my pet

It is now eight and a half weeks since our GS was put to sleep. After three weeks, I requested to know where the ashes for our pet were as we had requested return of the ashes and told I should get a response within 35 days. On receipt of this, I replied this was totally unacceptable as the process was too long and we had her put to sleep on the spot after her diagnosis - so no case history etc etc. I got a response three days later - sorry an administration error - your pet was sent to COMMUNAL cremation - offered cremation fee back + £50 compensation! I immediately replied I wanted to know that my pet had been treated in a humane manner and some confirmation that she was indeed cremated and where she was as we at least hoped to have some closure - 20 days after that I have no response other than to my previous response - we will get back to you within 25 DAYS this time. I paid over £1000 to have her looked at and put to sleep, that there are no checks as to have the after treatment is carried out beggard belief from the prices they charge - can understand higher vet fees for ooh service - but NOT the add ons - especially if they totally fail

Country Road South, Hull. Brilliant service

The staff and vet at Vets Now County Road South Hull was absolutely brilliant with our dog. I was made aware of all options and the vet made sure she had my consent to go through with anything my dog needed. Our dog was very stressed and the vet made sure our dogs wellbeing was paramount. Thank you so much

Wonderful vet

I had to take my dog with a mouth wound. He is always very anxious with vets and needs to be muzzled in order for vet to examine him. The vet we saw was absolutely super and spent time on floor with him initially, making a fuss of him and thereby gaining his confidence. She was then able to do whatever was needed.

£450 down the drain

£450 down the drain, when telephone advisor could've advised us to contact the poisons line first. Triage vet nurse at Walnut Tree, Milton Keynes, also unfortunately lacking in knowledge and I felt I had to advise him when he was keen to take my dog in to be sick. Eventually the vet came in to let me know she had called the poisons line and there was no need to worry and no need for treatment and that next time it would be worth calling the poisons line first as it was much cheaper. Thanks for the very late advice!

Good Vet. Not a long wait.

Needed to see a vet as an emergency. The vet was very good and we didn't have to wait too long.
It was expensive though and I didn't expect it to be quite so much in need of a cleaner.

Exceptional reception staff, but a poor service model and baffling aftercare admin

I’ll start with genuine praise for the reception team, who were exceptional - friendly, empathetic, helpful, and completely unfazed when my anxious puppy had three accidents in the waiting room- ita why I was there. They cheerfully cleaned up after her, and when trying to sort out the baffling charges, I mentioned I’d need to catch a urine sample at home, they found me a plastic kidney bowl to use - despite the vet having handed me only a small vial. That kind of thoughtful, practical kindness genuinely helped on a stressful Sunday morning, and they deserve real credit.

Almost everything else fell short. We waited around 90 minutes despite an empty waiting room and no information about the delay. When we were finally seen, the clinical care felt strikingly basic: a urinary problem was the suspected issue, yet my dog’s temperature wasn’t taken, no tests were carried out, and the examination amounted to feeling her abdomen. That was essentially it.

In short, it felt like an overstretched NHS A&E experience - the long, uninformed wait, the minimal assessment - but at full private prices. The cost was eye-watering, comfortably the most expensive element of an already expensive weekend, and the value simply wasn’t there for what we received. I left having paid a small fortune only to be advised to see my own vet, which I did the next working day - where a simple urine test produced an actual diagnosis for a fraction of the cost.

The aftercare admin then made things worse. I received a stream of follow-up emails and multiple invoices that appeared to say different things, with unclear and at times contradictory guidance about the insurance process - who was claiming what, whether I needed to pay an outstanding balance, and what I was supposed to do next. It took real effort to untangle, at a point when I was already stressed and out of pocket. Clear, single, consistent communication would have made an enormous difference.

I don’t doubt genuine out-of-hours emergency cover is expensive to provide, and I’m glad it exists for true emergencies. But the combination of a long wait, minimal assessment, premium pricing, and confusing follow-up left me frustrated. Credit to the reception staff; the wider service and its aftermath need to be a great deal better.

Excellent, caring service

Everyone, the receptionist, nurse and vet, was amazingly helpful, kind and knowledgeable. We brought our cat, Pebble, who had suddenly become extremely unwell. She, and we, were treated with real kindness. The vet was honest about Pebble's condition and possible outcome. We chose to let her go peacefully as the kindest thing we could do for her. We stayed with her.

Absolutely disgusting attitude from the night staff(out of hours) didn’t answer phones or door bell when rung, the only reason they knew I was there was because a dog was taken outside for a pee, all they were worried about was getting paid as cat was a street cat and even when I said I’d pay any bills they weren’t happy but were then happy enough too charge extortionate amounts as it was 6:30 in the morning, will never use again

Amazing nurses - Horrible managament

Would be 1 star, but thanks to amazing staff member, saving it from being 1 star.
Overpriced greedy owners looking to benefit more from hurt animals than helping them.
Not sure if clinic has ever heard about patient confidentiality. Imagine you are in emergency, stress, anxiety you want your loved one to be saved, and after 30 minutes of emergency treatment, you told the prices you never knew that existed. My meet and greet in a reception was "Who are you?" Excuse me? Good afternoon to you too ma'am! How much I have to pay, entire reception waiting room hears, no customer confidentiality at all. Bad news about your animal? Lets announce it to the entire waiting room to give you more anxiety and stress to let other people know what you and your animal is going through. Money over service, is what this company is, sad reality. I asked about monthly payments, receptionist didn't even knew what is Klarna and how many payments can you split that into. My massive respect is to the staff ( not the management ) who try their best to help but are held back by the policies of greediness.. This company is not for the lower class people unfortunately. Would not recommend.

Hi Mark, thanks for your feedback on the cost of our service. As you may be aware, it’s a lot more expensive to run an after-hours emergency vet service. The greater running costs we incur are reflected in our prices. On Site Staff

On Site Staff: Excellent care, very helpful, wonderful and very skilled people.

Vets Now as company:
Absolute rip-offs. Almost £400 just to be seen on a Sunday lunchtime. This is before treatment and medication.

Then every medication had it's own £20 separate "handling fee" added to the price of the medication itself. In several cases this was THE SAME as the cost of the medication itself.

Bare in mind this was an already-staffed surgery. Our arrival did not require an emergency vet to leave halfway through dinner with the kids and race to the surgery.

I called the surgery the following day when the main (non Vets Now) staff were in and confirmed the prices were wildly inflated above standard and that there is no handling fee on medications (for in-hours visits).

It is standard practice for out-of-hours to charge extra, mostly because they know they can, but the level to which Vets Now have inflated and invented costs is shameful.

Hi Karl, thanks for your review. I know it can be frustrating having to pay for an unplanned trip to the vets. Much like it is for other out-of-hours services in other industries, It's more expensive to run an out-of-hours pet emergency service than a general daytime practice. We've broken down where our costs go here if you'd like to find out more: https://bit.ly/2ybF2sc.
