Really enjoyed my 14 day trip around the South Island in the Aventus. It came clean, was reliable and the unlimited km's was absolutely fantastic to get around and see the sights without added pressure. There was enough room for two to sleep comfortably, the bed was easy to set up and the portable toilet was handy. Staff was friendly and helpful and the van was a dream a drive. Thank you again and I would recommend this van for couples or singles on a budget looking to see the sights without having to pay a fortune in hotel stays and hired cars.

My friend and I had a lot of fun on our trip to the South Island! However we did miss an introduction to the van regarding how to operate the car, the toilet, the sink, mini stove ect. The car drove perfectly and we had no issues.
We booked this a cheap way for us to enjoy our honeymoon around the south island. We weren't expecting much for the price!
The things that lacked for us was..
-No Instructions for the set up of the bed or the items included.
-The beds are pretty thin. Would recommend getting a bed topper for a more comfy sink
-We didn't use the sink or toilet because we weren't sure of the set up
-Not clear around the pick up and drop off situation
-Not clear around the petrol as it was given to us with an empty tank
-Would be really good if they could have included curtains for privacy or even just adding some hooks for us to hang our own stuff.
Pros
-Car handled well and was nice to drive
-Plain black camper making it easy to freedom camp
-Price was reasonable and the petrol wasn't too much.

I cannot express to you how bad this company is, it’s taken 2 months to get deposit and ferry refund back, there accounts, sales and admin teams hid behind eachother, there cars are not clean, ours made weird sounds the whole way, and in some cases (like ours) the rego wasn’t in date, of which when they got a fine for out of date rego, they transferred it over to me…. And charged me $77 for the convenience…. And when they realised they had messed up, don’t apologise.
As for paying the money back it’s taken me calling several times a week for about a month, save you’re self about a tonne of energy post holiday, and just go with any other camper company

We had the 2-seated Mystery Mashine, which was a perfect size for a few days on the road. The bed was big enough and everything we needed was there. Tho, you could really see, the car and everything else was old and simple —> wooden bed and shelf without anything to organize. Storage room was made by simple building boxes under the bed. And the car (2005 Toyota Noah) was easy to drive and alright. However, it always had a little turn to the left. Overall, we had our road trip and we loved the car. If you want it more comfy and modern this is not your rental. If you don’t mind, you’ll have everything you need.

Worst rental of my life (and I've rented lots of cars). It was filthy inside and out, dinged up, virtually no fuel, no service (not even a person there on pick up, and had to make 3 phone calls to see what was going on), plastered with advertising including $175 per week, and we had to pay $175 for the extrados we pre booked)
We had a little mystery machine for about a week and it was a great experience. It drove wonderfully and made tripping the South Island a treat. We were surprised that the camper didn't come with any bedding or window covers/curtains so that was annoying. Otherwise, it came with everything you'd need. It was obviously a little snug but that means fuel lasted for ages. Would totally rent one again just be more prepared with bedding.
Rented a mystery machine 2, expected to get a colorful painted van as I saw on the website when I booked but the van was just plain silver. Not the biggest problem but a little bit disappointing. Picked it up in Christchurch, relatively smooth pickup except the key was in the wrong lock box than what I was told. No staff there so no instructions on how the camper works. The van was not the best, has seen better days and didn’t really feel clean. Worn and outdated but did its job. The AC didn’t work very well, the air never got cold so I mostly had to drive with the windows open. The washer fluid ran out after the second use. Missing curtains or something for the windows when you were going to sleep or just wanted some privacy, as I was traveling solo it felt a little uncomfortable. Kitchen utensils worn and not really clean, saucepan where the handle was about to fall off. Considering the price it was okey but I still expected more. Probably won’t rent from wicked again.
We had a great 2 week trip in a mystery machine van from Wicked Campers. Very basic setup, but it was all we needed!
We were stranded in a scrapyard for 4 days! I will paste the email we sent to them as this will sum up our experience.
“As a number of you are aware, we broke down on the 23rd of November, when the power steering pump pulley broke and the belt was torn to pieces.
We were stuck in the middle of nowhere and had called the roadside assistant number (based in Australia) that you had provided. They had told us to remove the belt ourselves and keep driving, this was all done over the phone without them physically looking at it. We were not confident in doing this and could have put us at further risk. There was no effort made by the roadside assistant to contact anyone to come and help us.
Locals had stopped to ask if we were okay and contacted a local mechanic, who came to tow us back to his scrapyard/garage. The local mechanic told us that it was not safe to drive further, which means that if we had listened to your roadside assistant they would’ve put us at risk. The local mechanic did not have the part to temporarily fix our van and therefore had to order it which didn’t arrive for 4 days. We were stuck sleeping a scrapyard for 3 nights and 4 days without any assistance from you or the roadside assistance company. We had contacted you a number of times in which no help or support was provided, and was faced with poor customer service from everyone we spoke to at Wicked Campers. There was also no contact to even check that we were okay.
After the part had arrived, the local mechanic we organised stated that the van was never road worthy as the pulleys didn’t line up and the belt that he fitted would fail again as this was a permanent issue made by whoever attempted to fix this van. This needs to go for a full mechanical check as this could cause further issues and potentially fatal accidents. We arrived back in Auckland after driving the van back unsafely, putting ourselves at risk and saving you money by not sending out a tow truck. We have ended our trip early as the local mechanic deemed it unsafe to carry on our journey.”
There is no contact information for anyone other than the marketing team and they provided poor customer service.
The owner Jon was very rude and unprofessional he was also swearing on the phone. When we hadn’t received any response we threaten legal action and kept the van key and that suddenly moved the refund process along a lot quicker.
DO NOT HIRE FROM THIS COMPANY!
The cars are great! They're eye-catching, well-equipped, and very comfortable for two people. We didn't have any issues with them. I'd happily rent from them again. The price is very low compared to other rental companies.
I have some reservations about the after-hours car return process – specifically, we weren't informed how to return it, which meant we had to wait for a response. Communication during pick-up was quite poor, but that's the employee's fault, not the company's.
The only downside is that they hold a 500 New Zealand dollar deposit for 30 days, even with full insurance. Usually, when I rent a car in another country, I didn't have a deposit with full insurance, and when I did, it was refunded upon return.
Overall, I'm very happy with my choice. I was thrilled with how positively people responded to the paint job of our car.
Had a beautiful trip across the south island and the team at wicked campers Christchurch helped us with our plan and provided great recommendations. The van had everything we needed and handled the conditions we met. Would highly recommend if you need a self contained camper.
Van was basic and did the job. Check engine light was on upon collection of van and fuel tank was half full but clean van and spotless windows! Esky was abit dated. Cooker was good. Phoned to report check engine light but was told not to be worried, it should be okay or to call road assistance. Van was overdue for service by about 3000km? And needed new windscreen wipers.
Collection and drop off were simple- key in lock box and drop off in lock box on return- does not warrant the extra fee as there was no customer service or assistant present.
Hoping bond is returned quickly as have read other reviews that it took weeks.
Our experience with Wicked Campers could have been better. We flew to Queenstown, NZ and took an UBER to Wicked Campers from the airport, but nobody was there. We waited around for a bit and tried some phone numbers that were taped to the door, but didn't get an answer. We finally spotted some guys at nearby car wash and they said that we should have a lockbox code. I had been receiving marketing emails from Wicked Campers, but found that the one about checking in online had gone into my junk email folder, so I didn't know it was there. We finally were able to get the keys after doing online check in and calling the number at the bottom of that email, but since there was nobody there, we received no instructions about how to use the camper or anything. The camper was not that great, quite old and all of the door jambs were full of spider webs and dead spiders. By the end of our trip, after driving to Te Anau and Milford Sound, the camper was rattling a lot and making noises. We were afraid to drive it anywhere far from Queenstown after that for fear of being stranded somewhere. The price was good, but I think I would rent from another place with newer vehicles and better communication next time.
We rented a Mystery Inc Campervan from Wicked Campers Christchurch, and dropped it off in Queenstown.
We arrived quite late at night, and it was a easy process picking it up, which was definitely helped with their great communication. They have a few numbers you can call and could ask any questions on whatsapp. Which was really handy. Same with dropping it off.
They had a few stickers all over the campervan to help you drive correctly and safely, and a very worn out manual/information sheets on majority of things you need to know.
The painting of the Mystery Inc design looked great, but the car itself did look a bit worn out, same with the inside. But I wasn't expecting brand new.
You have to bring your own bedding, but it did have some basic cutlery, pans etc for cooking.
The bed consists basically of gym mats, which unfortunately hurt my back and on our last night of it, we had to book a hotel room so I could actually rest in a comfortable bed.
Apart from that, I enjoyed it. But unfortunately my back was not cut out for those 'mattresses'.
This was the second time we rented a van and it was actually better. It came with an adapter, more gas in the tank and overall smoother. Some weird noises throughout but great! We would do it again!

The van was great. Had all the basic camping equipment we needed and was fantastic for the 4x4 tracks in Kakadu.
Unfortunately, the mattresses in the tents also came with bedbugs. We had to return early due to the severity of the bites and had to decontaminate all our luggage. Wicked provided no response or assistance, and no compensation of any type was offered. Very disappointing.

Love wicked campers! We had an amazing week in a great little van. A really head turner! The booking, collection and drop off procedures were all really straightforward

I'm very unhappy cause the company doesn't want to refund the later check out (100$) we had paid while we came back in time... They made an asset, but, as we're french, we come back in France and will never use it.
Over the car is very old, and the bumper was fixed by plastic link ! There isn't plate and we had to buy it.
Had an awesome snowboard trip with the Aventus to Mount Ruapehu in the North Island. The bed is comfy enough and plenty of storage for all my stuff. Out of hours pick up was very easy and a short uber ride away from the airport! Would definitely recommend ☺️
