Wicked Campers New Zealand Reviews 

So far Wicked have been easy to deal with - we return tomorrow. Car is basic, no frills but has been cheap and reliable. Pick up and drop off from Christchurch Airport. Key is collected from a lock box - call the number on the shipping container when you get there. Feel like this system could be improved as we did not realise this was the case before hand. It was a bit of phone tag - call the number, they then notify someone else who calls you with key box details. Ours got stuck and would not open so they had to call a third person who was luckily close by to come and fix it. Had it been raining it would have been uncomfortable standing without shelter for the 45ish minutes the process took.
All in all, it was as expected for the price.

I had the best week away touring the South Island in the Mystery Machine from Wicked Campers!!
Prior to the trip, the company were so easy to deal with and answered emails with questions promptly.
And from the moment of pick up the van was excellent, it had everything I needed, was a smooth drive and looked pretty cool too!

The van ran really well and was easy to drive. It had all that you need to have a great, simple, quality freedom camping experience. It was clean and had really good instructions so we could just start on our trip without any delay. It would have been nice to have curtains to help with privacy and feeling more secure. It would have been helpful to have a place to park our car while we were away, and more instructions about this.

Ordered a scooby doo van and when we arrived we didn’t get what we ordered it was just a plain silver van but no one had contacted us to say they had changed it. The woman in the phone said it’s because they was sold out but there was plenty there and no one had let us know that they had changed our van. Very upset as we only booked due to the design and we would’ve booked else where. Very bad communication. Also, the van they have given us, still had some items from previous people which means it hasn’t been properly cleaned

The van was super reliable! We went all around the South Island of NZ with it and it was just what we needed. The engine light was on and there were a few mechanical things off with the car, but it worked great.

We hired one of the colorful self-contained „Mystery Machines“ and were rather disappointed to end up with a simple black Toyota Voxy van. But it did its job. It is smaller than a „real“ camper and thus offers an easy driving experience and comes at a cheaper ferry price than larger vans, and it is of course much cheaper per day. We love the NZ tradition of offering numerous cost-free camping sites in sometimes really spectacular sites.

The interior could be designed cleverer. The sink can hardly be used, as it sits on the side (which means: in the bed) and one (of max. two) sleepers had to live with a hard corner and little space for legs.

The freshwater tank was not accessible at all (somewhere underneath the toilet) so you would not know how much water is left. In our case the tank did not hold water at all - so the sink was useless. Storage is somewhat limited. The battery is rather small, so a radio light unintentionally left on by night would kill it. That might become a problem when camping somewhere abroad. We were lucky to find friendly helping hands.

Ultimately, we were happy with our experience. Road service (per WhatsApp) was good and fast. We enjoyed our evenings inside the van with a light chain and a glass of wine.

Our experience with Wicked was that it was a fair experience for the price.

Don’t expect anything fancy- the vans are small, more or less converted minivans. I just barely fit in the bed at 6’2”, the features/cooking area are minimal and can be difficult to use if you have a lot of hiking gear because storage is somewhat limited, and the outside of the van was pretty beat up.

We picked up in Queenstown and had to take a taxi to the pick up spot, as it’s too far to walk and they don’t have a shuttle service.

Pickup was interesting, as almost no instructions were given to us on how to use the van or the features. We just received the keys and were wished the best of luck and to have fun.

The vans are self contained with a compost toilet but you’ll probably want to use public/campground toilets as much as possible!

Once we got our system down and all of our gear stowed, we found the van became less “cramped” and more “cozy”, but that took a handful of days to sort out. We had good weather so we were rarely trapped inside, which was good as we would have gone stir crazy.

Ultimately, renting from Wicked allowed us to stay 4 weeks and within our budget instead of 2 weeks with another van rental, so we were happy with the experience. I would recommend them to people on a budget who prioritize hiking and exploring, not someone who wants a luxury experience and plans on hanging out in the van a lot.

We rented an Aventus 2 camper van from wicked for 2 weeks in New Zealand in March 2025. The van was everything we needed for two weeks of cruising around and exploring the south island. A bit pricey, although pretty comparable pricing (at least from what we saw) to similar sized campers available for rental in the area. The vans are certified self contained so we were able to take advantage of many of the free camp sites which helped cut down on trip costs. Overall very easy pickup and drop off process in Christchurch and Queenstown, the van had the essentials, was a reliable vehicle and pretty fuel efficient! Not a fancy camper by any means but comfortable to sleep two of us and enough storage for all our gear.

What You need to know when you hire a wickedcamper Van: it is likely to be old.Therefore it is cheaper. We had two with about 200000km, so there are noises on the car, scrapes an signs of use everywhere, Our plugcharger fell out at the first use, but worked, Radio didn’t work properly, but the car went well, also Kitchen, Sleeping, tools for cooking, basic of course, but sufficient. Toilet ok, also very basic, two stoves, one pretty new,

Our car brake down, we made it to a nearby city, called a No in Australia, which was announced on an information-sheet in the car (travelling in New Zealand), the operator answered, an kept responsible for us. At first it sounded that we needed to wait unless the car is repaired but then we got an another van within 24h and we could go on. The second van was newer, needed much less patrol, an in that one we had three stoves, but only one going fine, for us it was ok, all together we can recommend wicked campers, we liked travelling with the van! Rented a van from both the Queenstown and Auckland branch and both times the staff were helpful in getting you set up and ready on the road. Would use again.

We had a great experience travelling the North and South Islands of NZ in our Wicked Camper.
We were a little apprehensive at first when we picked up the van with the characatures of the Beatles on one side of the van and song lycrics front and back "All you need is Love" but everywhere we went people would either be laughing or waving or taking pictures. It actually made it a fun trip. The van ranwell and never missed a beat and although we did not use the toilet or kitchen water basin , it was nice to have it on board. I received an email last week which was confirmation of return of bond which is approx. 30 days since our return. We had a great 17 days without issue at a fair price. It was way more economcal than booking hotels/motels and gave us the freedom to travel to wherever without restraint on timelines. Thanks Wicked Campers NZ!

The van handled well and was certified self-contained, which allowed me to camp at any of the freedom camping sites (for free) that are scattered all over the country in some of the most scenic places. There was a shortage of vans for the date I needed it, but Wicked rep was able to get one transferred and prepped for me, which was much appreciated. I didn't actually use the chemical toilet or the sink in the van (great majority of camp sites have public toilets), but having the self-contained cert allows legal camping in many more places. Great way to experience New Zealand and I was very happy with Wicked Campers.

Wicked Campers was great. the car was very easy to drive and flawless not issues at all and it ran great. The only thing is that the sleeping is very bare bones, but that is reflected in the price you get what you pay for. Also the ice box was very very small and i couldn’t hold much cold food at all but i was able to plan around that. All in all wicked campers is a great bang for your buck deal if you looking for a cheap but nice camper van

DO NOT RENT FROM Wicked Campers (same owner as Campervan Village) if you want to get your security bond back within 30 days! It took my son 51 days to get his AUD 7500 after returning his campervan in a good shape. He even had to initiate a charge back procedure at his debit card company.
The question is why does Wicked Campers / Campervan Village treat its customers this way? Do they have a cash flow problem or are they trying to scam customers?
