African Ancestry Reviews 

This is a expensive test to be African American and not get your African heritage. I was told a have Caucasian folks on my maternal line.
If results does not show African lineage I feel a refund should be received; as I paid over 300 dollars to be informed of something my Grandmother told me. I was not satisfied. Customer service response was not helpful. You can get more info from a DNA test that costs way less.

I got my African Ancestry results back in October 2021. African Ancestry gave me a certificate informing me that my patrilineal ancestry is the Akan people in Ghana today.

I did 23andme testing back in 2011. According to 23andme, I have E-M85 (E2b1) which is a SubSaharan African haplogroup that indicates that I don't descend from a European Scott nor any other European on my paternal line. 1 in 7,600 23andme customers share my haplogroup assignment.

I know a man with the last name Koch who has both E-M85 Y DNA haplogroup and paternal African American roots in Louisiana like myself. He was told that his patrilineal ancestry was Lissongo in Central Africa. Even though African Ancestry tested only 8 STR markers, Koch and I have different ethnic group results even though both of us have E-M85 Y DNA haplogroups. He told me about his results before I took the test.
I discussed my results with him, and he told me that African Ancestry was odd. He told me that he kinda thinks that it is not very reliable. Later on, he even told me that African Ancestry is nothing but an expensive haplogroup test. He told me that he had posted that on their facebook website years ago and that he was blocked by them for it.

I did FamilyTreeDNA's Big Y-700 test. I got my results back in January 2022. It tests 700+ STR markers. I was assigned Y DNA haplogroup E-BY101982. There are 4 testers that have the markers for E-BY101982, but I am the only one assigned to it. I have ten private variants which are also novel variants. The other 3 testers are African Americans.

E-M75 is also known E2

The man who is the most recent common ancestor of this line is estimated to have been born around 35,000 BCE.

E-M85's paternal line was formed when it branched off from the ancestor E-M98 and the rest of mankind around 15,000 BCE.

The man who is the most recent common ancestor of this line is estimated to have been born around 12,000 BCE.

There are 139 DNA tested descendants, and they specified that their earliest known origins are from Saudi Arabia, United States, Kenya, and 15 other countries.

E-BY101982's paternal line was formed when it branched off from the ancestor E-BY108741 and the rest of mankind around 850 CE.

The man who is the most recent common ancestor of this line is estimated to have been born around 1100 CE.

There are 4 DNA tested descendants, and they specified that their earliest known origins are from United States with 2 from unknown countries.

I don't know why England was counted separate from United Kingdom.

After reading all the reviews, I’m glad I didn’t purchase the kit. I hoped it would be better for black people and offer more in-depth information and location than Ancestry.com, MyHeritage, or GenealogyBank. Well, the reviews saved me from paying $305 for information I already have about my Ancestry.

EUROPEAN!! DISAPPOINTED is an understatement! I was so excited to get my results which I’d secretly done and was going to spring on family for moms 102nd birthday this month. ‘African’ should be removed from the name as it’s what draws many but based on reviews/complaints leaves others almost tearful like me. Not even a specific European location. Data should be based on AFRICAN NOT EUROPEAN research, data,etc! I don’t recommend anyone to do this with high hopes. Only reason for the 2nd star was the time frame of results receipt was good. I’m So sad.

I had already gotten my DNA results from 23andMe, but African Ancestry claimed to be different and better. In addition, it is a Black owned company and I wanted to support them. I should not have bothered since they had no interest in supporting me!

Though the $299 USD fee covers shipping and handling, that is only within america. So, if you are external to america, expect to pay to ship the kit back to america. If I had known this ahead of time, I would not have purchased the kit.

A return postage paid label should have been inside the kit, but a return label was not sent with mine. When I contacted the company they told me they would send me a label. That information was incorrect, so they emailed me again saying I have to pay for shipping and handling back to America. That information was not on their website, nor was it in the kit. I asked that they absorb the cost for shipping and handling because that information is not stated anywhere. They claimed that it is on their website but when I asked them to show me where it is, they did not respond.

They refused to work with me or meet me halfway, therefore, I elected to return the unused kit. It cost me $33 CAD to return it, plus they charged me $22 USD for shipping and another $25 USD to restock the product, and I am sure restocking must have been extremely laborious, not! So, I paid $100+ CAD and have nothing to show for it, other than my disappointment and rage!!!!!!!!!

Bottom line: this company is by and for Afrikan americans only! If you are not in america, do not bother with this company unless you do not mind paying the exchange rate which for me was $1.387 CAD for every USD dollar.

Dealing with this company has left me with feelings of resentment and rage! If we cannot trust and rely on our own, we are surely doomed!

Be warned: once again, if you live outside of america, I do not recommend purchasing this product!

Scam! Predatory company! I’ve already had DNA test in the past and discovered that I’m over 75% West African (specifically from Ghana, Cameroon, Mali, and Nigeria) with less than 7% European.

I receive my African Ancestry results today after waiting over 3 months. I receive a Bullsh*t certificate that says I’m of European descent.

Of the 75% of African DNA, they couldn’t tell me NOTHING! I received better results with Ancestry.com and 23andMe!

The reason I purchased this test was so I could identify my ancestral tribe. Complete waste of over $300+ and I would NOT RECOMMEND!

I had a full mitochondrial sequence done by Family Tree DNA in 2021. I was hoping I could just submit those results for an analysis at a lesser price but there was nothing on the website saying I could do this so I gave in and paid for another matriclan test.
My results should be ready in January 2023. That would be around 16 weeks from when I mailed the samples in. Same thing happened when I ordered a patrican test for my son. He already had a Y-700 done at Family Tree but I had to submit samples for this test also. No discount. My son's DNA results came back Portugal and Spain. Not African. although his autosomal results are 80% African. MesoAmerican and German. I am anxious to get my results back. I am L1c2b1 50% African. 25% German. 21% southern Slavic. and (6) other regions in small amounts . And it keeps changing on the websites. LOL. By the time I get my AA results I wont be black anymore. (just joking...) Canadian, Jamaica and Barbados distant cousins have been recently discovered. Oh, and Ancestry finally gave me 1% NA. Interesting.

African Ancestry was amazing! It traced my African roots to Africa. Thank God for closure. African Ancestry services helped me find my roots in Bioko Island and Cameroon, Africa (BUBI AND TIKAR PEOPLE)! I was NOT disappointed. It was well worth knowing about my lineage. African Ancestry thank you very much for your services.

Got my results back yesterday from the patriarchal test and it said that there was a European male at some point on my father's side and my DNA matches the people living in Portugal! Like really man! After doing some research there were Portuguese men who married African women but I don't know......I need accuracy! I wanted to know which African people group my lineage is in....🤷🏿‍♂️

I took my African Ancestry on my father side and it came back Igbo from Nigeria. I was afraid I was going to get an European ancestor because as you know our ancestors were raped by European men. It can come back European and African Ancestry makes that clear. So many negative reviews simply because people fail to read what's on the website. They make it clear.

Horrible, says I'm European, when my other tests show both African and European, total scam.

They just gave me some super generic result that only aligns with one-half of my father's side of the family.

Expensive waste of time.

African Ancestry is a ripoff. I gave them my $300 for them to tell me that I’m “European.” Even Ancestry dot com gave me broken down African heritage.

I am so disgusted that I paid so much and waited for months to be told nothing. If there is ever a class action suit, I want to join in and get my money back.

Absolutely NOT!!!! Similar to many others with an 85% West African DNA make up I thought i was paying for more detailed information about my African Ancestry. Surprise surprise I too am apparently 100% European. My father has passed on and i have no brothers so basically i gifted African Ancestry $300 for nothing. I now know that the DNA. testing method used by African Acestry is sub par. This company is definitely operating in a predatory fashion against their own people.

Disappointed with delivery of test results. This was my fault for not asking questions before buying the product to know what I was actually getting for my $300. Anyone considering this company should first call or email them with questions. If you personally know someone that tested with them, get their feedback.

I do not recommend using this service. I did and wasted my money. My report said I was 100% European and not of any African ancestry at all WHICH IS A LIE. 23andme recognized that I am part sierra leone, Nigerian, Gambian, and congo. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY. When I asked why the result they said that I didn't understand and to go to the group on Facebook for an explanation. JUST DONT BUY THIS PRODUCT, they do not have all of the scientific information, especially for people with DNA strands such as U6A3 which is an ancient strand that was found in the northern parts of Africa, and IZ58. Nothing to celebrate when you do not have all of the information.

Stay away from this company. Immediately upon renewing my subscription and paying my money all the data past my great grandparents on all sides of my family disappeared from the family tree view. That’s ten generations of ancestors or 821 entries. The information is there but not appearing in the tree view. Their service representative just said that there is nothing they can do. Of course there is as the info did not go away is just a computer glitch on their part but they are too big a company to care. They just want your money. That’s hundreds of hours worth of work down the drain. I will never want do business with Ancestry ever gain and Ancestry will go out of my way to solve the problem. When a company gets too big to not care is time to find someone else to give your money to.

This journey of finding my ancestry tribe has been nothing but amazing. When I had questions about my results, the customer service was awesome with responding back quickly. I noticed that alot of the negative comments are from people who didn't get the results that they want, which is european ancestry. If it wasn't for African Ancestry I would not have found my tribe and I'm forever thankful for this. Thank you African Ancestry! Keep connecting African Americans back to our homeland.

It's a very lengthy process, as others have pointed out, but my main complaint is the price. This test gives you less but charges you far more. I paid $300 for a test that only tests maternal lineage, and my result was simply: "European." So I got nothing for my money. I then paid $80 to Living DNA and--in less than six weeks, mind you--got a full profile with all of my African countries and tribal breakdowns (and yes, my maternal line was also indicated by them as H1a/European). It was everything I wanted for FAR less money. African Ancestry is taking advantage of Black people by pretending to offer something different and specialized hence the higher price, but really they're just exploiting folks. DO NOT RECOMMEND.

Ignorant, rude, typical of THEM. They lie, make up excuses, don't deliver products and details. I spent $300 and didn’t get the results that I paid for. Also, the website doesn't have any details for the African REGION & tribe they claim we're from.
