Review summary

Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Looking at 62 reviews, most reviewers were unhappy with their experience overall. Many customers reported issues with unexpected and unclear charges, including tolls, late return fees, and inflated prices for services or vehicles. Reviewers also frequently encountered problems with the service, such as long waits, disorganized systems, and being left stranded without a car. The payment process was a significant source of frustration, with many reporting disputed charges, difficulty with refunds, and issues with credit card payments. Customers also experienced problems with the vehicles themselves, including receiving cars with existing damage, incorrect models, or mechanical issues like flat tires or summer tires in snowy conditions. Though some people were satisfied with the staff, describing them as pleasant, helpful, and professional, others found them unsympathetic or incompetent.

Fined 2500GBP for waterleaking from the roof

During our reantal period, the roof of the car is leaking water. When we return the car and tell them about this issue.
After a phone call with the manager, the staff tell us, it is oke. So we left and take our plane.

After 1 month, they charge me GBP 2500.-
And this is what it said: "Incident Details: Scrape and dent on roof of vehicle found upon inspection, they reported on pickup that roof was leaking water."
And it was US tell them the car roof is leaking. I don't know how I can damage the roof.
This campany treat an honest customer with a fine of 2500 GBP.

Not what we thought we booked

Thought we were hiring a standard rental car on their website.
Got an email telling us where the car was.. on this road.. up a hill... between these other streets
Turns out it was enterprise car sharing .. car sharing company.. not what we booked. Car was near empty on fuel and dirty

The one and only airport shop closing at 10PM

So they run a car rental shop at Stansted Airport, where flights land until midnight, but close the shop at 10PM. Yet they ask for the flight number but I guess it is just out of curiosity, because they do not wait for you if flight is delayed and not even try to contact you. First time in my life I get to the shop 75' late (not 3 hours) and nobody is there.

No service

Arrived with flight and have been waiting for 30minutes to pick up my car. Queue is enormous. One person checking in. Two people in the office doing nothing. Never again

£300 deposit stolen

Rented a car in Greece and paid £300 deposit and these scumbags have messed me around for 2 months telling me they’ve sent it back to me and they definitely haven’t, also they keep telling me I’m not on their system so they can’t do anything.
They’re now not replying to my emails.
Do not use them at all costs.

Dreadful

Dreadful. We normally hire our cars direct with car companies (haven’t used Alamo before). We booked a hotel through Expedia and as part of the package came a car with Alamo.
We arrived late at night, had been travelling for 13 hours and just wanted to get to hotel.
When we arrived they said we had missed our booking and the car had gone. But they had a better car we could pay for. Being tired we just accepted this as we had to drive an hour to our hotel. We were charged £160 for the upgrade. Would never use again.

Avoid Alamo if you need reliability

We rented a car using their global website. When we arrived at St Pancras branch for pick up they said that the car we reserved has faulty gear and instead of an automatic they can give us a manual car or we can wait 4 hours for a rental to be returned. We said we can't drive manual and asked for another segment (even smaller) but they didn't offer any. 4 hours later we returned and the car they offered was electric even though we rented gasoline since it was going to be long road trip. They said they don't see any details other than the segment and if we want we can wait for other returns until they close up but cannot guarantee anything. We've never used an electric car before and didn't know the infrastructure as we were tourist but they assured us that it has good range on full charge and support supercharging so we can charge while having a coffee. They gave us a Zoe 50 kwh and it barely had 200 miles range and the fastest charge it supported was 43 kwh. We had to stop every 3 hours to charge at least 1.5-2 hours, paid over 100 pounds as parking fees in charging stations. TL;DR they don't care about the customer, try to give what car they have no matter your reservation, mislead the customers until they get rid off you.

Charged 5000 for exceeding the speed limit

I rented a vehicle for a week in Johannesburg. They incorrectly entered my contact details and as such I couldn’t be warned when I exceeded the speed limit. As a rule rental companies warn the tenet of excessive speed a few times before imposing a fine. I received no warning and they added 5000 ZAR to my bill. They refused to accept any responsibility. I’ll never use them in future!!

Avoid this company!

Our recent car rental experience with Alamo / Enterprise during a trip to Cornwall was extremely disappointing due to major vehicle issues and poor customer service, including an unresolved burnt oil smell and engine oil leakage, multiple unreturned calls, inadequate support at rental locations, and continued charges despite the disruptions, which wasted half of our vacation; the car was rented from Gatwick Airport.

Never before have I rented a vehicle at an airport to arrive and the rental office is shut! Our flight to Mykonos was delayed for an hour and so incurred taxi costs of 200 euros to get to our Accomodation and return to the airport for the car the next day. No apologies at all and advised they did us a favour by not cancelling the booking. Will never use this company again!!!

A fiat 500 is considered a compact not a mini

I ordered a compact car which is the second level of car. My documents say Vauxhall Corsa or similar and that the car will have five seatbelts and take two luggages in the boot. We were given a Fiat 500. 4 seat belts and took one luggage. The entire reason I ordered the Corsa was because they say don't leave your luggage showing and we had to put one bag on the back seat and the other in the boot. I wanted to take my grandson out but couldn't because we couldn't use the back seat because of the luggage. I contacted them on chat and was told it was being reported and I would hear back from the depot. The sat nav didn't work and the apple car play didn't work. When I returned the car I was advised the case was being handled regarding my compensation. I've heard nothing from them. Just a disgrace.

Do not use Alamo at all costs

Do not use Alamo at all costs. Picked up a vehicle at Heathrow - on initial inspection I noted no issues - BUT the car was wet and parked in shade. Just over 2 hours later on arrival at destination when the vehicle was dry and in the sun a very minor dent was noted in the drivers door - definitely not caused by ourselves. Informed the branch immediately. Bottom line is they essentially called us liars and charged us for the repair.
Europcar give you 24hours to report any additional minor damage because that recognize that conditions may affect your ability to inspect. Do not use this company

Warning Thieves!

Do not. I repeat DO NOT hire a car from Alamo Car rentals or their parent company Enterprise Rent a car (both who do not respond to enquiries).
I hired a car from Alamo (parent company Enterprise Rent a Car) in May for the duration of my travels through the UK in May 2024.
I hired and returned the car to Gatwick airport.
Upon my return, a representative from Alamo thoroughly inspected my hire car for any damage/issues. In a direct quote from their representative he stated “the car is all good, you’re all good to go. Please write us a review when you get the chance”.
As a side note, I also happened to forget my jacket in my rental car, and I spoke to another 2 Alamo representative during this interaction, and neither representative stated that there were any issues with the car I had returned. They stated that it was being washed and cleaned for the next customer.

The day after I returned the car, Alamo deducted £748.77 from my card without my knowledge, without my consent, and most concerning, without my presence!
An additional 3 charges, £748.77 each (totalling £2,246.31), were also attempted to be deducted from my account.
Making the grand total amount attempted to be deducted by Alamo £3,295.08 (inclusive of charges made, and attempted, and an additional £300 bond not returned).
I did NOT under any circumstances provide Alamo with my card details or provided them with permission to store my card details. Furthermore Alamo did not notify or inform me that they would store my card details on their system for any further future payments. The initial payment was made using an eftpos machine, that required my pin. This would therefore have to mean that Alamo stores the card details of their customers to be able to deduct significant amounts of money from their accounts.
In summation Alamo has stolen £1,048.77 without any documentation or justification for these significant charges. Alamo did not even attempt to contact me prior to deducting this money from my card, despite me still being in London and completely contactable at the time. Please also note that this conduct is in violation of the British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association’s code of conduct (which Alamo’s parent company is a member of).

Alamo and their parent company have also failed to respond to my emails requesting an explanation and all relevant documentation to justify the charges.

I am not one to write scathing reviews, but I am at a loss for words, given how much money was stolen out my account, without any response to my emails from both Alamo or their parent company Enterprise Rent a Car.

Bad experience with Alamo out of LHR

We had a really bad experience with Alamo London Heathrow. After letting us stand outside the office doors guarding our luggage for 1h with no chance to sit down - with a 2 year old, a 79 year old and a 87 year old, we were offered two cars smaller than the category we booked (7 seater booked, 5 seater was offered). This wouldn't have worked due to our amount of luggage and child seat.
After 1h, suddenly a people carrier one size larger then we booked got available - for a 3000 GBP surcharge for the 10 days. We had already paid 1000 GBP for our original rental in advance. Included in that surcharge was a "prime location" pick up fee - ridiculous as we had a valid reservation already for the same location. The car we got in the end was dirty and in bad condition. It hadn't been cleaned at all after the last customer. I do not recommend using Alamo out of London Heathrow at all.

Good service, would recommend and use Alamo again.

Was able to book the car without prepaying and could pay at pick up at Stansted Airport. Efficient and professional at pickup in car rental village, staff were not excessively pushy in purchasing excess insurance which some companies have been in the past.
The agent on return Tom O'Donnell was personable and organised and the car was returned speedily without undue delay which is important when you have a flight to catch.

Dreadful experience

Dreadful experience

We rented a car for a long weekend in Saltsburg mid March 2024. It started well, the car was ready when we arrived and we even got a "Small upgrade" for free. The service at the reception desk was good.

We returned the car slightly late (30 min), and tried contacting the office by phone and email to warn them and inquire about potential extra costs. No luck. No response.

Cost of the rental was initially £153 (£180). Less than 4 hours after dropping the car, to our surprise we got a final invoice for an extra 103 euros. Some of the charges surprised us (RATE CHARGE 38.31 Euros, 38.31, WINTER FEE 4.16 euros, SURCHARGE 12.32, plus VAT of course and a contract fee!!)
We then emailed them back twice asking what those charges were for...on the 22/03 - no response, on 05/04 no response.
Money has been taken from us...

Will not be using Alamo again, and will not recommend it!!

I usually rent from Avis where I have a…

I usually rent from Avis where I have a seamless experience. For some weird reason I ended up renting from Alamo (Enterprise) at Glasgow airport this time. Normally with Avis I go to the desk, show some ID, get the key, go to the car and drive off. Not with this bunch. After spending 5 minutes at the desk giving all my details to the girl there, I then was met outside by an idiot with an IPAD who then started to go through all the details again, whilst in the pouring rain I might add. It was dark and he then started to go over every inch of the car with a plastic measuring device explaining continually that any damage would cost me, including the tyres. He spent nearly ten minutes between getting my details again and going over the car with a fine tooth comb. After attempting to spook me over how it would cost me £1500 excess if I came back with any minute damage to the car, he then tried to sell me additional cover for an exorbitant fee. I didn't even get the chance to tell him I had £10k excess cover through my travel insurance. Anyway after refusing this and my card being swiped, I finally got to sign for the car and got on my wet way. Lo and behold the same idiot was there when I returned the car two nights later, and we went through the same rigmarole (in the rain again) even checking the tyres, windscreen and anything else he could. Left standing in the rain again by the way. He looked disappointed when he found I had returned the car in exactly the same condition and he had to give me my £200 deposit back. Horrible experience overall and they are just out to scam you if you are not careful. Never again will I venture through the doors of Alamo or Enterprise. Sorry for deserting you Avis. My next visit to Scotland is already booked and I have booked with Avis this time.
