About aql

Written by the company

At aql, we continuously strive to enhance public trust and strengthen security in telecommunications. We’ve been in business since 1998 and we do not condone or support (or turn a blind eye) to any misuse of our network or numbers. We collaborate with government bodies, law enforcement, and regulators to enable safer communication for all.

In almost all instances when there is a suspected scam or similar on one of our numbers, it’s not aql, but overseas scammers using third-party networks to spoof calls. If you believe you’ve been contacted by a suspicious or fraudulent party, please report it to us here (we can act more quickly if you let us know the exact number that called you). In addition to reporting to us, you can also report issues directly to Ofcom too.

aql is one of the UK’s most innovative telecom operators, playing a pivotal role as a ‘hidden enabler’ of smart cities. We specialise in Messaging, Voice, Data Centre solutions, Connectivity, and IoT, securely connecting people, organisations, and devices to drive societal improvement.

Our goal is to help organisations adapt to technological change by leveraging innovation, creating a better future for everyone.

Spam call from 03333440000 saying they had a message and to press 1 to receive it. We are registered with TPS. We have a TrueCall device and it managed to get through the filtering system, presumably by pressing a key and them saying their name. Received a second one an hour later, however, the message was totally garbled. I have now blocked the caller.

5X price hike, no calling credit refunds

Have used this company for 10 years for SIP calls and it's been fine. Last year they raised the cost of renting a number from £2 to £10 per month, so moved on to another company. Their parting insult was to refuse to refund my remaining SIP credit. Apparently it's in the T&C, but after a 5X price increase in line rental you would expect some flexibility on such things.

Now using Andrews and Arnold instead. £1.44 per number per month and good service so far.

Hi Jeremy,

I'm sorry you've had a negative experience with aql. As I'm sure you're aware, costs across not just telecoms but all sectors have risen in the past few years and our prices have had to increase as a reflection of this.
I can understand how frustrating losing your credit may be, but unfortunately these terms are outlined in our T&C and credit being non-refundable is a standard practice.
We are sad to be losing a long term customer, but these changes were made to ensure that our services remain sustainable and viable for us as a company.

Thank you

Literally the worst 'customer service'…

Literally the worst 'customer service' I've ever experienced. I have been owed a refund from the twice now. Once for being charged for someone else's invoices and another for an overpayment on account for a product that should have been ceased 2 months prior. I've been on hold for over 25 minutes listening over and over to Passenger 'Month of Sunday'. Just FYI - If you're not bothered about taking calls from clients to try to make amends, at least give them 25 minutes of different music to listen too before finally just cutting me off. Funnily enough though, when I called back pretending I was a new customer, the call was answered in a matter of seconds. Oh and to top it off, the reason we're fighting this with AQL in the first place is that they increased our prices from £0.40p per item to £8! No one in management wants to talk to you, no one emails you back. Save yourself a lot of time and effort and don't bother!

Hi Stevie,

I'm sorry you've had this negative experience with our customer service team. If you could give me some more information such as a ticket number, I will ensure to escalate your query with the customer service team to ensure your issues are addressed. Your ticket number reference should be a 6-digit number visible on your inquiry.

Thank you.

Facilitating scammers - Why ?

Why do you facilitate and legitimise fraudsters ringing vulnerable people . Your bland standard response to reviews on Trustpilot . My elderly parents have had numerous calls that I have had to block . I am bemused as to how you are allowed to operate as you do ?

Hi Mr Jones,

We're sorry to hear that your parents have been contacted by fraudsters. As one of the industry's leading telcos, this is something we're strongly committed to clamping down on. We work with Ofcom, the police and other organisations to drive positive change to protect all end users.

As you may have seen in previous replies, in order for us to action cases, like you've just mentioned, we need certain details. Unfortunately, very few people escalate the necessary details and so we're unable to raise this with the proper authorities. If you could help by going to this page and completing the form, we'll do our part to investigate this suspicious behaviour: https://aql.com/report-a-scam-or-nuisance-number/

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review

Avoid these calls

Had four calls today from 03333440000 which didn't get through my call blocking. Last one was just before 22.00. When I called back is says AQL text messaging service. What are they up to?

Hi Pat, I apologise if this has disrupted your day. For context, at aql we provide a text-to-speech product that is used by many trusted UK organisations. This allows non-SMS capable numbers ie landline numbers, to receive SMS. In some cases, this may be a prescription, delivery update or alternative alert from a company or organisation you are familiar with. If you would like to opt-out of this service and no longer receive text-to-speech SMS, please could you provide the number that was contacted and email support@uk.aql.com and this will be completed within 48 hours. I hope this helps resolve your query

Not for the small fish anymore

I've been using AQL for 13 years for my NPO's incoming landline calls. Never had any complaints against them but their price hike in June has basically priced us out as a customer, i.e. suddenly a £16+VAT bill per month went up to £80+VAT per month. If we were a big operator, i.e. we had more than 100 lines, we'd be fine. Whether this is their attempt to reduce rogue operators using their numbers or this is just a strategic measure to focus more of enterprise ventures, I cannot not say but it is such a shame to be leaving AQL with a bitter taste after 13 years.

Hi Mark,

I'm sorry to hear that our change in pricing has meant that we lost you as a customer. Unfortunately, due to the increasing costs of energy, materials, labour and everything else that we've seen in the last couple of years, we've had no choice but to increase prices. We kept them as low as we could for as long as we could, and increased them only to ensure we were not making a loss. I wish you the best, and hope that we can work together again in the future.

Happened to me too

Happened to me too. I put the phone down as I never use my landline for deliveries. I checked the call log and found the number - 03333 440000 - no-one gets numbers like that, then rang it to find the company is called AQL.COM obviously trying to sound like AOL.COM
All the other reviewers are saying the same thing, shut them down they are just helping scammers by selling UK telephone numbers. I will call the BBC and tell them to investigate.

Hi Patty,

We are sorry to hear that you are receiving nuisance calls from numbers that have been allocated to our company by OFCOM. Please use our web portal to report the number: https://aql.com/report-a-scam-or-nuisance-number/
We take nuisance calls extremely seriously. Reported numbers will be investigated and actions will be taken against any parties that are breaching our terms and conditions. In some cases, whilst the number that you see calling you may look like it is assigned to one of our customers it may not be the case and the number may be spoofed: https://www.ofcom.org.uk/phones-telecoms-and-internet/advice-for-consumers/scams/phone-spoof-scam
In this case, we would encourage you to raise a nuisance complaint to your communications provider so that the correct channels are followed.

How very strange that others give bad reviews of AQL. I've had first 2 then 3 numbers with them for over 10 years and found it a 5 star service. I'm talking about their £2 a month phone numbers, call recording, forwarding, integration with Gigaset equipment etc. Customer service very good too. Whats not to like?

A good service when it was working but…

A good service when it was working but frankly appalling Customer Service when I was left without an Internet connection for several weeks.
No ownership of the problem from anyone in the Business, including the Customer Service Director and no apology or compensation.
Avoid at all costs!

Awful customer service

AQL seize every opportunity to demonstrate how little they care about their customers, providing substandard services and extremely poor care. Their portal is outdated and unintuitive. Other than the really simple stuff you need to raise a ticket so their staff can let you down.

Portal needs work.

Their customer service was fine, just they obviously don't have their act together in terms of their portal, system, billing, etc. I left because they don't automatically bill, then i only notice once i get a late payment email, but once i pay the service isn't reactivated until i send a support request where i assume they do it manually. Too much effort for a service as basic as Voip. Definitely need a lot more work. But if they fixed everything up i'd go back.

Deplorable Customer Service

I tried to reach the sales team to make a payment and they hang up before giving the details required to purchase online and blocked my number afterwards. Bizarre experience.
