Could a local car rental be trusted or should you go for the international companies? Well, at least for Avax in Split it is a good option that offered a really low price and decent prince on insurance (this is something is tricky in Croatia - either they block over 1000 Euro on your account or you have to pay an expansive insurance).

No problem that their office is a little bit from the airport since you get a personal pick up directly outside arrivals and go with them in a car a few minutes to their office. You doesn't have to stay in line at some office and since Split airport is under reconstruction no rental company has their cars nearby anyway.

Friendly on-line customer Service & Support that answered questions is extra plus.

Very good value and helpful car rental company. We hired from Zadar town centre and dropped the car off at the airport without additional charges. The car, Suzuki Swift, was brand new and well equipped. It's size is perfect for exploring the area and easy to park - an important consideration in Zadar.
There was a slight delay in collecting the vehicle, but otherwise everything went smoothly. I would definitely use Avax again.

great service. i struggled to hire a car without a credit card but avax sorted it out for me. they delivered the car to the hotel for me. car was great. overall a very good company.

Having had issues with large firms before took a chance on Avax but was doubting good reviews. Chose them because competitive price included cross border and Croatian ferry insurance and no extra charge for Neum gap plus free extra driver for emergency. No deposit for online booking and paid cash at time of pick up. Was upgraded free of charge and had a nearly new Suzuki Vitara. Excellent service from friendly staff. Would have been five stars but for two small issues. 1 - screen wash was empty but purchased some from garage for a few Kunas. 2- drop off location was different to pick up and it would have been helpful if there was a Avax sign to indicate whereabouts of Avax office at Split airport or I had been given a map as location not on Satnav. ( Split airport is chaotic as it is a state of regeneration so everything is temporary)

Excellent service and a great vehicle. The Suzuki Vitara is a great car and eats up the miles whilst you ride/drive in comfort. This was the third hire that I have had with Avax (one from Zagreb and two from Zadar) and I will definitely be using them again and again...I can highly recommend this company, when you visit Croatia...5 x stars from me!

The car was what we wanted with the Green card included in the rental so we could travel around Croatia and Montenegro. The car was a bit dusty but I will say the dry weather will have somenthing to do with that. I will have given a 5 starts if they had come and pick us up from the airport as estated in the email they send to us. After wainting for a while there we decided to ring from our mobile and the gentleman said that we needed to find our way to them. It wasn't far but it will have save us time if we knew that before. I forgot to say I rented the car in Dubrovnik.

Hired a minibus for four days from Zadar then left at airport.
Very laid back but competent. Much nicer experience than large companies. No hassle when we explained that we had our own excess insurance. Would definitely use again

Some comments on this site had me a little worried but I still chose Avax for the great price with cross border and second driver included (these options would get you close or over double the price in other companies). And there was absolutely nothing to worry about

The desk is not technically in the airport but it is maybe 300m out of the terminal. Just across the road from the INA gas station (look it up on google maps) We didn't know where it was so we called and he came to get us. Maybe they should include some explanation of this in the confirmation email..

We had no problem when giving the car back, he spend less time looking the car than when we took it and he was clearly not looking to bother us.

The car was not in perfect condition (scratches etc) nor perfectly clean (dust, but nothing worse than the average personnal car)

Finally, the reservation process is kind of surprising but I don't see a problem. You don't pay anything in advance and the first mail you receive is "pending reservation: Reservation is now under consideration, with next email we will confirm or cancel your booking" then a confirmation email (I got it in 30 minutes at 10 o'clock in the evening)

The registration is smooth & the car OK. The return is smooth too. But we were surprised to find there's no fixed counter at the airport, we prefer to have one. The gas tank is 3/8 full when we took the car & had to be returned 3/8 full, which is clumsy.

We were hurriedly rushed out of the airport as soon as we arrived to a car with a broken rear light, we were not given a map even though it was written as being included with the car and then told we had to pay a 700 euro deposit for the car which we were not aware of. (this then took 2 weeks to be refunded, partly due to our bank as well) Once we had paid, the guy quickly drove off and left us, in a new city with no map or directions and not much petrol in the car. It was also very difficult to find to location to drop off the car when we were done as all we had was the address on our receipt and the office is tucked away inside a complex with multiple other offices etc
