We booked a vehicle for our family holiday with Avia Rent a Car via a Broker, Orbit.
When we arived at Split Airport on the 15th August, after a lengthy queue, I was told by the Avia Rent a Car operative that they would not be able to provide me with a vehicle as my Visa Credit Card, issued from First Direct Bank (Part of HSBC) was not acceptable as it was from a "Digital Bank". I reviewed the terms and conditions that Orbit had sent me and this says that "Virtual Debit or Credit Cards may not be accepted", but this was a physical VISA card and so this condition didn't apply. Despite arguing my case the agent wouldn't accept it and left me, my wife and 3 kids stranded at the Airport. Our only option was apparently to take out some very expensive and additional insurance. Very convenient!
I was forced to go to the next door hire company, Enterprise, who were polite, friendly and efficient, but, because I hadn't pre-booked anything I was forced to pay an additional 275 Euros to hire the same type of vehicle (VW T-Cross). Needless to say they accepted my VISA Credit card without any issues at all.
I see other customers are experiencing the same issues. I don't beleive this company can be trusted and so I would avoid at all costs. There are plenty of other, reputable companies at the Airport.
I also think Avia's aggressive response to the feedback to the other customers who have experienced this attempt to extort additional money from honest customers speaks for itself.
With 1 IN 4 CUSTOMERS GIVING A 1 STAR REVIEW, I think they need to start taking some ownership for the issues they are causing.

There is a newly launched restrictions for driving into the restricted zones in the old town but it was never verbally mentioned by any staff at the time of key collection (when I arrived, it's nearly office closing). When later found out after stepping into the trap, the staff just said it was well written in the office and I should have seen it. What a good excuse! The penalty could be Eur1600 if keep entering the restricted zone repeatedly (without noticing)! Maybe the staff think it's time to close the day and no need to inform the drivers as they "should have known"?
Besides, when email to ask insurance matters, it was never replied.

This campany knows how to scam costumers leagally. They suddenly did not exsept my credit card for the deposit so we never got the car that we allready paid for. The only Way they could solve it was if we paid for insurence (twice the cost of the car) and its funny how they allowed me to use the credit card for insurance and not for deposit. They allsow would not give us a refond and we ended up having to pay another rental Company for a car. We allsow heard from some lokals that they deliberetley dobble book in hope that someone cant pay for it.

It was a heartwarming experience. The service was very friendly, both during the pick-up in Split and the return in Zagreb. The car was wonderful, new and clean, perfect, a true pleasure to drive through the beautiful landscapes throughout the country. Our trip to Croatia was our honeymoon. We'll take home the best memories.

Bad experience.
Local rental company in Split Airport did not accept my gold Mastercard for deposit because alleged from an Internet bank. This was not mentioned in the rental conditions given by the intermediary rental operator. So, better coordination and operation is needed between those companies. However, I blame Avia, because I had good experiences with the intermediary in the past
The local rental company offered an expensive insurance which was even more than the total rental price.
Got the car finally from Sixt, even 35% cheaper with no additional insurance required. No problem with my credit card (which includes insurance).
Never again.

The worst car rental experience – Avia Rent a Car
We have traveled to more than 30 countries and rented cars many times, but we have never experienced anything like this.
We purchased full insurance, yet after a minor damage the company charged us €3,100, claiming we should have called the police. This requirement was never explained to us at pickup – on the contrary, the employee even joked that “we don’t have to worry about anything.” The condition existed only in the small print of the contract, which is completely misleading.
On top of this, they withheld money because we returned the car earlier and also charged €50 for “out of hours.”
It is unacceptable to pay for full insurance and still be trapped with hidden terms and outrageous charges. Completely unprofessional, misleading and disrespectful towards customers.
We will never use Avia Rent a Car again and strongly warn other travelers to avoid them.

No rent a car company will ask for 80 euro to send someone to check the vehicle at 04:00 am ! Simply provide a key Dropbox ! Also fiat panda is not fiat 500 which I have booked !!! Never will use Avis again !

The people behind the Avia rental desk in Split Airport were very cold and unwelcoming. Despite having paid for extra insurance when we booked through BSP, which covered a wide range of issues, the person behind the desk tried to scaremonger us into taking Avia's insurance. They told us that our initial insurance was limited (when it was pretty comprehensive) and that if we had an issue on the road, Avia would offer no assistance. But if we paid an additionnal 300 to 500€, then they would be happy to assist. They also push on you a cleaning fee, as well as a prepaid petrol tank fee and finally, a 50€ fee to board a ferry in a country known for its many islands. These tactics which go against EU regulations are not acceptable.
Finally, they gave us a car on which they had forgot to check the tire pressure (the car signalled it after 20 minutes).
I would not book through Avia in Croatia again.

These scammers are deliberately trying to extort extra fees or are offering cars with faulty or modified fuel meters.
I think they're either scammers or using cars with faulty or modified fuel meters.
Before returning the car to Pula airport, I filled up the tank at a station about 20 km away, until the fuel gun went out.
Unfortunately, for some unknown reason, the fuel gauge wasn't showing the maximum, and the range was still 450 km, which didn't increase after refueling. During the drive, the range gradually increased, and upon reaching the airport, it was exactly the same – 540 km – as when I picked up the car. The fuel gauge still wasn't showing the maximum, as it had been right after filling up.
The AVIA employee wanted to charge me a €45 fine. I was furious about the constant lack of a maximum fuel level indicator, but fortunately, I still had time before my flight.
I took the keys from them and drove to another station, 7 km away. I filled up with 3.6 liters of fuel, and it was pouring out of the filler neck.
When I arrived at the airport, the fuel gauge was still not at maximum, and the available range had dropped to 490 km, so I arrived at the airport anyway.
I asked how this was possible.
The explanation was unclear, and they wanted a receipt from me for filling up, about 5 euros for 3.6 liters, probably to hide evidence of tampering or the car's malfunction, so I didn't give it to them!
I emailed them asking for an explanation of how this was possible, but the reply was also off-topic, as was the current comment under my post.
Since they claim that "What matters is the gauge reading at return—nothing more.", why didn't the employee ask me again for a penalty for a low tank of fuel, since the odometer still didn't show maximum and the range had dropped by 50 km? I have photos of all the readings, and let them take me to court. I won't change my mind that they're either manipulating or offering cars with faulty odometers, as they suggest in their comment, which allows for unjustified fines to be added.
P.S.
Now I'll write, "Your accusations are false and unacceptable."
The drive to the refill station could have consumed about 1 liter of fuel because I wasn't driving calmly by then, so theoretically, there could have been about 1.6 liters less fuel at the time of returning the car than a full tank, after subtracting the fuel in the filler pipe.
But what guarantee do I have that there wasn't 2 liters less fuel in the tank when I picked up the car, since, as they themselves say, the fuel meter may be faulty. Why didn't the AVIA employee add another fine if the meter still didn't show the maximum?
They're right about one thing: "You were able to add 3.6 liters." This required numerous presses of the fuel pump, which refused to fill the filler neck all the way to the top. That would be consistent with 20 km from the first fill-up to full, and a very leisurely, legally compliant ride.

They were nice and efficient for the car pickup then came the return and first they tried to charge for a damage that was clearly existing. Luckily I had video proof. Then when I showed the proof the employee literally crawled under the front bumper of the car to find a scratch and said I don’t think you have this in your video so it’s new and chargeable. What a joke. There are plenty of fair and honest companies, this unfortunately is not one of them. Avoid!!

Edited with my responses to their response:
Do not rent from here. Worst place I have ever rented from. Rude. Unprofessional. Inefficient. Do not believe their response. I have rented from multiple places throughout EU and world and haven't had such an experience.
Worst of all likely scammy. If you end up using this add extra 2-3 hours for returning car. Upon returning they claimed there was a tiny scratch on rim of tire that was new. It was such a small scratch on tire that it would be impossible for me to say for sure whether real or not but we then had to stay an extra 1.5 hours to sort out paperwork. (Yes, I had the full insurance -to their point -unbeknownst to me, it was through the third online party that booked the car but it was definite the FULL insurance -so to say it was basic is a lie). They also claimed gas tank wasn’t full, had me personally go and fill more only to find gas meter was faulty.
*Their Gas meter was faulty - also weird that i had to personally go and fill it -
It is another complete lie to say that they gave me an option to pay to have them fill it as i would've done that just because I was so frustrated with process. They kept insisting that I personally had to go, wouldn't accept any alternative, were inexplicably rude about it and then had me return the receipts for some reason.
Thankfully we didn’t have a plane to make (bc our flight was cancelled ) but at an airport rental you really expect quick easy service. Made for a very stressful and unpleasant end of trip. Again, I have traveled a lot and dealt with a lot of car rentals. This was not a typical experience.

Can not fault it, car was great, service also. Easy and fast process. Returned car at 4 am and staff was there to check the car.

The Avia car hire at Pula is a thinly disguised scam. Our flight was delayed by 1.5 hours - they said as we were late and didn’t provide a flight number so the booking was cancelled. They could reactivate it but only if we paid for their ultra expensive insurance. We booked through Orbital and have checked thoroughly once home and there was no option to input the flight number. Why aren’t you asking orbital to include this if it is required? They did the same to someone else in our queue. In addition they were extremely rude. Thankfully we didn’t take them up on their scam and got another car through a different company. Worst car booking experience - do not use Avia

Not a very welcoming attendant at the desk, and a very picky one who handled the car. When we returned the car they tried to charge us for small scratches that had been on the car before we got it. They all had a very suspicious and unfriendly approach, like they wanted to create trouble for us… At pick-up we had to pay extra for the car to be cleaned - I have never experienced that before… Will not recommend Avia Dubrovnik to anyone - we will certainly not use them again.

It seems to be not possible to trust people who give you the car or those who take the cars back again.
And I also got no answer yet to my mail. Not even a reaction.
No hard insurance sell. Good quality car although a bit smaller than I hoped.

getting a car consultant was very arrogant (the answers into questions was giving short and not explaining in good chape), advice to make a photo, then I return car they trayed to charge extra that inside car was not clean. photos, which I did taking a car helped me to prove that they gave it like it was returned. this was the first time when rental company was looking just to charge more. if it possible recommendation would be to chose another car rental company :(

Just wanted to say thank you for the fantastic customer service. From pick up to return everything went smoothly and quickly.
Thank you
