Very shady with so many extra charges.

Car itself had no problem at all.What I found very unfair and tricky is that the company keep adding extra charges unreasonably interpreting that everything is part of their T&Cs.
Firstly, I was charged 50 euros for picking up my car after 9pm. The truth is my flight was delayed for around 1 hour and landed at 8:44pm then it took me around 15 mins to collect luggage and pass the long queued passport check. I arrived at the desk at 9pm and it took me another 15 mins due to waiting for another customer to be processed.
None of these was actually my fault and the company knows very well how to put the customer under pressure at that time of the night.
Secondly, on my return, again I was charged 12 euros for cleaning fee which was absolutely irrelevant. They should already accept a little of dust on the car as we use the car and do not paper wrap the car and leave in the garage. I am sure that the company have already accounted the cleaning cost into the rental price as this is a simple formula to calculate the final price for goods and services.
As a result the process was disgraceful and very shady.

1. Out-of-Hours Fee – Clearly Justified
Your scheduled pickup time was before 21:00. You arrived at our desk at 21:15, well outside our standard working hours. You did not provide a flight number, which would have allowed us to monitor delays and prepare accordingly. In the absence of this crucial information, your late arrival triggered the standard out-of-hours fee of €50, as explicitly stated in the Terms & Conditions and on the voucher issued by your booking agency. This is not a surprise fee — it is part of the conditions you accepted.

2. Cleaning Fee – Not Optional
Our clean-to-clean policy is standard practice. The €12 cleaning fee applies when a car is returned with more than acceptable wear, including dust, interior stains, or other neglect — regardless of how minor the customer perceives it to be. Again, this is not hidden; it's transparently stated in your rental documentation.

3. No Deception – Only Factual Execution of Terms
We do not “add charges by interpretation.” We implement the exact conditions each customer accepts in writing before rental begins. It is the customer’s responsibility to read and understand the terms before signing. If a customer fails to meet their obligations — such as arriving late without notice or returning the vehicle dirty — charges apply accordingly.

Unsubstantiated accusations of dishonesty or manipulation are entirely inappropriate and unfounded. We operate according to industry standards and legal rental procedures.

Great experience

Renting a car at Zadar Airport was by far the best car rental experience I've had.
The team at the desk was friendly, pleasant, and highly professional. We had a nice chat before being shown to our car, with all potential issues clearly marked and explained. They even encouraged us to take photos of the vehicle for our own peace of mind.

Returning the car was just as smooth and pleasant—quick, easy, and with no hidden charges or suspicious tactics that some rental companies are known for. I highly recommend them!

Nice but beware of money grabbing fees

Nice car and helpful staff but I feel my experience was marred by money grabbing policy. Was charged a 12€ cleaning fee because the car had been caught in the rain so was “dirty” even though everything else was spotless. I would’ve totally understood if there had been food, stains or dirt in the car but something that will be easily be cleaned with some water sounds absurd to me. Even more so when you’ve already paid a lot for the renting itself.

The condition of the vehicle upon return did not meet the agreed standards, as stated in the rental terms and conditions clearly outlined in your voucher. Vehicles must be returned in a reasonably clean state both inside and out. In this case, the vehicle required additional cleaning beyond standard washing due to visible dirt accumulation.

This is a standard and transparent policy applied to all customers equally. We do not consider this "money grabbing," but rather a fair application of the agreement both parties accepted.

Catastrophic rental

Catastrophic rental: under the pretext that I had a Visa Gold with immediate debit and not deferred debit, AVIA forced us to take out the full insurance policy with no excess, with an additional €175 to pay.
I've never had this problem, even abroad, when leaving deposits on my Visa Gold, so I plan to ask Visa what's going on.
AVIA also made us pay €12 to wash the vehicle, otherwise we should have done it before returning it!
I don't intend to leave it at that with AVIA and I will write to the company's headquarters to report this abuse.
I will never rent with AVIA again, and other people at the airport ahead of us had the same problems with this immediate debit card issue.

The card you presented was a debit card, not a deferred credit card, which does not comply with the standard requirements for securing a rental deposit. This is clearly outlined in the rental conditions provided on your booking voucher and confirmed again upon signing the rental agreement. Debit cards are not accepted for the security deposit unless full coverage insurance is purchased, which was explained in detail at the counter.

The €12 cleaning fee applies when the vehicle is returned in a condition that requires standard interior or exterior cleaning. This policy is stated in the rental terms and is not unique to your case.

You acknowledged and signed the rental terms and pricing upon vehicle pickup. These are industry-standard policies and were not applied arbitrarily or abusively.

We are transparent with all conditions, which are provided in writing ahead of time and reinforced during the rental process. We do not accept responsibility for misunderstandings arising from not reviewing the voucher or rental terms prior to arrival.

Avia. Split airport
When i tried to collect the car they wouldn't accept 2 of my credit cards - one for Anna bank and one with Chase. ( never had a problem anywhere before using these cards and I travel a lot) So i had to use a debit card as a deposit but they insisted that i take out full insurance for this which was 350 euros for 10 days! Nearly as much as the rental.
It felt like i was being ripped off, but they had me in a corner and I had to get the car.
Wont be using Avia again.

We must emphasize that you attempted to present cards issued by virtual online banks, which are clearly not accepted for deposit purposes as outlined in the rental terms and on your booking voucher. This includes providers such as Anna Bank and Chase, when issued through virtual banking platforms. These are not recognized as valid physical credit cards for security and compliance reasons in car rental operations.

You were offered the only available alternative in such cases — full insurance coverage, which is a mandatory requirement when a valid credit card is not provided. This policy is strictly enforced and transparently communicated in advance, including via your booking agency.

We do not accept unfounded accusations of being “ripped off” when the conditions were clearly stated and accepted at the time of reservation. It is the renter’s responsibility to arrive with proper documentation and payment methods.

Car was new

Car was new, worked perfectly, agents were quick, no negative comments on those. The only thing that needs to be improved is that it is really difficult to reach the office by phone, they do not answer often at all, in case you would need their help with something. There should be a line for urgent situations, if you need their help.

Please avoid Avia rent a car

When I was hiring at the airport there were 2 very unhappy customers returning cars because they were being charged for cleaning, so I decided to pay in advance to avoid any unnecessary delays upon return. When I returned they charged me €150 for cleaning, additional €13 for diesel as I didn't refill at the station around the corner and €37 service charge for filling the €13 of diesel! They said the car had to be sent away for 5 days for chemical cleaning due to a damp stain on the seat. Everything in Croatia was fantastic except this scamming car hire company. The staff were so well rehearsed...professional scam artists....

The vehicle was returned in a condition that required immediate chemical treatment due to large, visible white stains on the seats. This is not normal usage, and such condition makes the vehicle unrentable for several days, causing not only direct cleaning costs but also operational losses. Charging for this is not only justified — it is standard industry practice.

Regarding the fuel, the car was not returned with the same level, and as clearly stated in both your voucher and signed rental agreement, refueling will be charged at market price plus a fixed service fee. This is not a “scam”; it is an explicitly agreed term you accepted by signature.

To claim our staff are “scam artists” is a baseless insult. Our employees are trained professionals who apply the same standards to every client, regardless of nationality or circumstance. You were fully informed of all conditions in writing, and all charges are supported by documentation.

We strongly reject your claims and suggest reading the terms and conditions you agreed to more carefully next time. Avia team

I strongly advise against this company

Very bad experience with this company
they charged me 30€ because I took the car at 5PM rather than 12AM and when I requested to modify the return hour they charged me additional 80 euros. In addition they charged me 125 euros because I will go in Montenegro, it is not clearly indicated in their documentation when I made the reservation. To finish the car had a lot of chocks and the personal when I took the car were not firendly

1. Charges for Delayed Pick-Up and Return Time Modification
Your reservation clearly stated a pick-up at 12:00. You arrived five hours late—at 17:00—which is not a minor deviation. This delay disrupted our scheduling and incurred additional operational costs, which are transparently outlined in the rental terms and conditions you accepted. Similarly, requesting to modify your return time—especially outside of our regular business hours—activates an after-hours fee. These are standard industry practices and not subject to arbitrary exceptions.

2. Border Crossing to Montenegro
You were charged €125 for crossing into Montenegro, a non-EU country. This fee is prominently listed in the rental conditions and clearly indicated on your voucher. Driving our vehicle across international borders without proper authorization is a direct breach of contract and renders any insurance invalid. The claim that this was not clearly stated is categorically false.

3. Vehicle Condition and Staff Conduct
All existing vehicle damage is documented and reviewed with the customer at pick-up. You had the opportunity to inspect the car and report anything additional. As for our staff, they are trained professionals and we reject the suggestion of unfriendliness based on one-sided and subjective claims.

We strongly advise that future renters carefully read all rental conditions and booking vouchers before arriving. You signed and accepted these terms—claims of ignorance do not exempt you from responsibility. Misrepresenting our standard procedures as dishonest is unacceptable and unsubstantiated.

The car was very good service not so much, cheeky company.

The car was very good it was in very good condition and work very well.
The down side is that at the reception they charged me around 120 euros for delivering it back att a different destination. I had already declared that when I reserved the car. Every single other time I have done this the price of giving it back a a different location is added to your quote. So I did not expect to pa an extra 120 euros, this is a little cheeky on AVIAs side. They also asked me if I wanted to pay for in advance to wash a dirty car. Every other time I rented a car that means a dirty car not rain specs on the car. Cheeky again. When I turned the car back they said there was damage on the car. I said it was just a spec and could be wiped off. The attendant actually got a rag and wiped it off! Then charged me 12 euros because the car was returned dirty. I should have taken a photo! I don’t think I’ll be renting from them again. Very sly business model.

Free Vehicle Category Upgrade Provided
Despite your accusations, you were actually given a free upgrade to a higher vehicle category at no additional cost — a gesture of goodwill from our side that you failed to acknowledge.

Clean-to-Clean Policy Applied Fairly
Our clean-to-clean policy is clearly communicated both in the rental agreement and the voucher. You were asked at the time of rental if you'd like to prepay the cleaning fee, and you declined. Upon return, the vehicle did not meet the expected cleanliness standards — a fact confirmed by our staff. As per policy, a standard cleaning fee of €12 was therefore applied.

No Damage Charged
You were not charged for any damage. Our staff verified on the spot that what you referred to as damage was in fact a superficial mark and wiped it off immediately. Again, you were charged only for cleaning, not damage — a fair and documented decision.

You accepted and signed the rental agreement, which clearly outlines all terms and fees. Accusing our staff and business model of dishonesty while ignoring these signed conditions and the fact that you received an upgraded vehicle is unjustified and misleading.

Good car but aggressive service on pick-up

Positives:
The Car was clean and properly maintained. No issues.
Price was reasonable and competitive.
Negatives:
The agent was particularly aggressive in their 'upsell' pitch when I picked up the car on 13th July.
We'd already taken out extended insurance protection elsewhere but she tried to insist we take the same cover from her. I had to decline 3 times. She also pushed several other add-ons, which I kept declining. It became a bit of an argument before she was prepared to move on with the paperwork processing and release the car to us.

No debit card accepted for the deposit…

No debit card accepted for the deposit first time in many rental car trough the years, so i was obligated to pay 300 more euros for something like cleaning fees and petrol when they weren’t necessary at all, obligated to do another Insurance and feary fees… ridiculous, the car was ok !

As clearly stated in the Terms & Conditions and on the voucher you received before pick-up, debit cards are not accepted for the mandatory security deposit. Only a valid credit card in the main driver’s name can be used for pre-authorization.

When a valid credit card is not provided, the only alternative is full coverage insurance. The ferry fee and any other additional charges are also clearly stated in the voucher and apply only when such options are selected or used.

All procedures and charges were applied strictly in accordance with the agreed rental conditions, equally for all customers.

Fast pick up and drop off

Fast pick up and drop off. But smaller car than expected. Always take pictures of the car on pick up and drop off. All sides and also under the front and back spoilers! Doing this gives you evidence if there is an argument. I did not encounter any problems with the AVIA staff.

Robbery

Took a long time to deliver the car when we arrived at Pula Airpor. Got a nice car. Went over the car quickly at the Airport. also stood in a long queue when delivering the car, when you have to catch a plane! other companies spend 5 minutes on this. with AVIA it took over 30 minutes. upon delivery AVIA found a tiny scratch above the wheel arch. this small scratch can easily be fixed by polishing the car which you have to do regularly anyway. they charged 288 EUR for this. Go clear of this company. this is robbery.

We would like to firmly clarify the following:

The agreed pick-up time was 20:30, while the actual pick-up took place earlier, at 20:16. The agreed return time was 19:30, and the vehicle was returned earlier, at 18:52.

Regarding the damage, the scratch above the wheel arch cannot be polished, as the paint layer was damaged. According to standard repair procedures and manufacturer requirements, the entire rear wheel arch must be repainted, which is why the damage charge (€288) was applied in line with the official price list.

All conditions and procedures were clearly stated in the voucher you received before pick-up and applied equally to all customers.
