I have been coming to Bach to Baby…

I have been coming to Bach to Baby since my grandson was a few months old. He is now at school and is sad he can’t come when I bring his little sister. We all love the concerts and the lovely way the musicians interact with the audience. It has been a valuable way to introduce them to classical music. When my granddaughter was just learning to speak she went up to the flautist and said’bye bye music’. Thank you for the music.

Hi Claire, thank you so much for your beautiful review. It really touched me to hear how long your family has been coming to our concerts, from your grandson as a tiny baby right through to your granddaughter now. There is something so special about seeing different generations enjoying music side by side, and it means a great deal to us that our concerts have been part of your family’s story for so many years.

Your grandson is most welcome to join us at the weekend concerts and during half terms and holidays. We love seeing older school-age children coming back, and seeing them connect with the music at a different level as they grow.

And your granddaughter clearly had a moment with our flautist (bye-bye music) which absolutely made me smile! Our musicians are brilliant at combining high-level performance with a gentle, engaging approach for little ones, so those interactions are what beautiful moments that we treausure for a lifetime.

Thank you for supporting us over the years, and for bringing your family to enjoy these concerts with us. x

Thank you so much for the lovely review, Rosa! I’m really glad the atmosphere felt warm and welcoming and that everything felt well organised on the day. As a small family-run team, we put a lot of care into making our baby-friendly concerts easy and enjoyable for parents and little ones, whether it’s classical pieces, jazz, folk tunes or seasonal favourites.

It means a lot to know it all came together for you. We’d love to welcome you and your little one back again soon for more live music and happy wriggles.

Amazing baby and children friendly music concerts

I've been going to Bach to Baby concerts for about 8 years now, with all my children. My eldest still enjoys them. The quality of performers is always amazing and they're always very engaging with young children. As someone who loves classical music, it's also a great way for me to introduce my children to classical music but also for me to be able to enjoy quality music with children who may not always be quiet. It's always been a great activity for me to do on mat leave and at the weekend when back from mat leave. HIGHLY RECOMMEND! Thank you so much to the organisers for such a wonderful and amazing concept!

Dear Maïlys, thank you so much for this wonderful review. It means a great deal to hear that you’ve been coming to our concerts for so many years and that each of your children has enjoyed them in their own way. Seeing families return over time, and watching little ones grow in confidence with the music, is one of the real joys of what we do.

We take a lot of care in choosing performers who can offer both exceptional musicianship and genuine warmth with young children, so I’m delighted to hear that has come across so consistently for your family. Our aim has always been to create a relaxed and welcoming setting where parents can enjoy high-quality live music, and children of every temperament can take part in their own way.

It’s lovely to know that our concerts have been part of your mat leave days and your weekends too. Thank you for recommending us and for supporting this small family-run team over so many years. We’d be delighted to welcome you and your family again whenever it suits.

Great baby/toddler concert

Sydenham location, a wonderful experience that brought on the Christmas feeling in November hehe. Lovely performance and very jolly atmosphere. Although my LO is only 4 months she manage the 45 mins amazingly. And other children around seem to have a lovely time also.

Hi Tacknia, thank you so much for this lovely review. I’m really glad the Sydenham concert brought a bit of early Christmas spirit with it. It’s always a joy seeing little ones settling into the music in their own way, and it sounds as though your four-month-old did brilliantly with the full 45 minutes. The older ones usually bring plenty of jolliness too, so I’m glad the atmosphere felt fun for everyone.

We try to keep things relaxed and welcoming for babies of all ages, so it’s wonderful to hear the morning worked well for you both. We’d love to see you again for more music and cosy, family-friendly moments.

Lovely as always

Been going to events organised by Bach to Baby since my son was just a few months old, he is about to turn two. My son really enjoys music and loves watching the musicians play their instruments. These concerts are the only way he can experience this live due to his age.
We have attended events at three different venues so far. The atmosphere is usually pretty casual, perfect for little children. If your child starts fussing or wants to move around, it’s all perfectly fine. The kids also get a sticker at the end, which my son loves.
Considering these events are run by just a small team who clearly love this work, I really can’t find much to criticise. My family have made many lovely memories at Bach to baby

Dear Ilze,

Thank you so much for this lovely review. It means a great deal to hear how much your little one has grown up with our concerts. It’s always a real pleasure to see children return as they grow, becoming more curious and engaging with the music in new ways each time. That’s exactly what we hope to nurture with our events!

We love creating a relaxed and friendly space where babies and toddlers can listen and enjoy the musicians up close, so it’s wonderful to know it has felt that way across the venues you’ve visited. I myself enjoy discovering the beautiful architecture and character of each neighbourhood, so it’s lovely that this has been part of your experience too. As a small family-run team, we put a great deal of care into making the whole outing feel easy and enjoyable for parents and little ones, from arrival through to the final sticker.

Knowing your family has made so many happy memories with us simply makes our hearts sing. We look forward to creating more musical memories with you both as he grows.

Thanks so much for taking the time to leave a review. I’m so glad you found the concert friendly and enjoyable, and I appreciate you sharing your thoughts about the music.

Although we do excel in the classical repertoire, our mission is to bring all sorts of live music to little ears and their grown-ups. We mix things up across the year with everything from classical and jazz to folk, musical theatre and well-loved children’s tunes and even musical stories. You happened to join us during our Christmas season, where the focus is on carols rather than nursery rhymes.

We’d love to welcome you back in the new year, when many of those concerts include chances to request children’s favourite nursery rhymes, and adults and children alike can sing our hearts out, accompanied by our incredible artists! There'll be a mix of musical styles to keep things fun for little ones.

Keep an eye on our programme listings. Each concert has its own feel, instruments and repertoire, so you can pick something that suits your taste or try something new!

I’m delighted to hear you enjoyed the concert and that the pianist’s introduction and performance made such an impression. We put a lot of thought into ensuring our musicians are not only world-class performers, but have a warm connection with young children, so it’s lovely to know that came across.

I’m also very pleased to say that we’ve now officially returned to Cambridge and will be holding monthly Saturday-morning concerts! We’ve missed being part of the musical life there, and we’re really looking forward to more merry music making and memory making with local families. As ever, our aim is to create a relaxed and welcoming experience from the moment you arrive right through to the final note.

Thanks again for joining us. We’d be delighted to see you and your little one back to a future Cambridge concert soon.

Hi Frank
Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts. I’m really glad you enjoyed the concert itself, and I’m sorry to hear that the wait to come inside felt stressful for you and your little one.
We always open the doors as soon as the team and musicians are fully set up and it is safe for families to enter. As a small family-run team, we do our very best to welcome parents and babies quickly, and I’m sorry it felt like a difficult moment on this occasion. We would never knowingly leave families without information or care, and we’ve looked into the details but haven’t found anything that matches this situation. I completely understand, though, how hard it can feel trying to keep little ones dry and settled in bad weather.
We care deeply about offering a warm and friendly start to each concert. Our events are meant to feel relaxed and welcoming for parents and little ones, with live music that babies can enjoy while they wriggle and explore. If you ever feel unsure about where to wait on arrival, please do feel free to knock, as our team is always happy to help where we can.
We’d be glad to welcome you and your baby to another concert if you decide to join us again. We do our best to make arrivals as smooth as possible, and I hope your next visit feels easier from the moment you come in.

First time going and extremely…

First time going and extremely disappointed. We went to see the Peter and the wolf concert in a lovely church, however the piano was set in a corner of the room with two huge pillars obstructing the view no matter which side you sat on. We moved and sat on the floor near the front, however the pianist had no microphone and we could not hear the story at all!!! Despite being near the front! I’m amazed that in a huge church with lots of crying babies / noisy toddlers the pianist doesn’t have a microphone to tell the story? Also, the concert started late and all the kids & babies were restless by the time it started ( especially as there was quite a long intro about rules etc).
All in all, my toddler was so disappointed as he loves the story, and very quickly got bored of the piano which was the only thing we could hear. I also feel the photos on the website are super misleading and show a wayyyy more of an interactive setting. For the cost of this concert I feel a little bit scammed to be honest. I had booked the Christmas concert for December also, but now I’m not looking forward to going and would like a refund for both. I have contacted the customer service (on Monday) and have yet to receive any response now on Thursday.
So so disappointed.

Hi Lucy,
Thanks for taking the time to share this - I’m sorry the concert wasn’t what you were hoping for.

St Mary’s is a historic church with pillars, which is why our concerts have unreserved seating so that families are welcome to move during the concert - stand, sit, dance or crawl - to find a clearer view. Our team can always help you find a suitable spot.
This Peter and the Wolf was designed as an acoustic performance. In some venues we use amplification for spoken sections; in others the natural acoustic carries well without it, especially for the small and intimate sized audience at the concert on Monday.
We aim to start the music promptly after a short welcome to cover safety and how the concert works with little ones and our website shows real concert photos across a range of venues, so layouts vary from venue to venue.

We replied to your first email with options, including alternative dates and venues with amplification to suit your preferences. If that didn’t reach you, please get back in touch. While tickets are non-refundable as stated at checkout, our aim is a lovely experience for your family and we’d love to welcome you back.

Not suitable for babies

I have been to two Bach to Baby concerts now - Christmas and another one today. Both were disappointing and not really geared towards babies as the name might suggest. The venue today was a lovely big church, but the chairs were set up in rows with little space for kids to roam about. There was too much talking from the performer, which I can see is something that other people have raised as an issue yet does not seem to have been addressed. My baby was bored and frustrated by the time the music actually started. The performer did a wonderful job - her playing was beautiful, but I spent the whole concert chasing my 1 year old around the back of the venue where he ended up with black legs and feet from crawling on a dirty floor. He absolutely loves music, and is part of a musical family, but he was not engaged with this at all. Both of the concerts I attended felt more suited to primary school aged children, not babies. I'm afraid I would not recommend as an activity for babies.

A special birthday for our music obsessed 3 year old

We’ve taken my music obsessed toddler to a few of these concerts over the past 3 years and he’s always enjoyed them immensely. In December we took him and his friends for his 3rd birthday to the Christmas concert in Highbury. The B2B team made him feel so special - reserving an area for him and his friends, giving him a lovely bag, and corralling the whole church to sing happy birthday to him. We were all so touched, and he felt so loved on his birthday thanks to the work of the team on the day. The office team were really helpful in organising the day too. Thanks everyone at Bach to Baby!

My kids love it. I love it more.

I have been to many Bach to Baby concerts, mostly in south London, and they were singularly beautiful experiences. It's like going to a top concert hall, but in the middle of the day with kiddos. My son usually makes a beeline for the front and then dances close to the musician, content in his own little world. I'm glad to be introducing the kids to classical music, but if I'm honest, it's me that I'm treating. It's a slice of time where I pause the chaos of motherhood and just enjoy being inspired.

We attended a Christmas-themed concert in Highbury/Islington and had a really nice time! We were impressed by the exceptional music (they use professional musicians) and the team did a great job in facilitating a child-friendly environment. The staff team were also very friendly and answered all our questions. Both parents and toddlers enjoyed themselves very much, and it was nice that we could attend such events with our little ones!

A great experience for you & your little one

I've attended a handful of Bach to Baby concerts, and what makes it great is the variety of music on offer. The calibre and quality of musicians is second to none, and the Bach to Baby Team make sure to let everyone know that it is an inclusive space for little ones.

It was a shame to read the more negative reviews, as I do not recognise this nor have found that to be my experience.

I would recommend to all parents to take their little ones along - My son first went when he was 9 months, and is almost turning 2 and has enjoyed all of his experiences.

The venues are varied and across London, as well as other locations.

Feels like a scam

This feels like a scam, overpriced and missold. The website is very misleading and shows pianos and children interacting with the musicians. From the name you expect classical music. The reality was 2 brass players sitting at the front of a pretty grotty church and playing a few jazz tunes and some nursery rhymes. The children didn't seem to care or engage. I don't understand what critics would acclaim such a poor event, it's clearly turned into a pure money spinner taking advantage of the baby market

Hello H

I'm sorry that the jazz concert was not what you were expecting.

As a small family-run business with children of our own, we know it is important to feel you are getting good value for money. Our ticket prices reflect the costs of our top-notch musicians, historic venues, and each adult ticket of £15 allows not only 1 adult entry but also up to 2 children free entry. We understand that £15 can be a lot with the cost of living nowadays so we run sales every now and then too.

I am really sorry to hear that you found the experience disappointing as the fantastic performers you saw are much loved by our audience. We get lots of customers sharing sweet videos of their children dancing, stomping or standing transfixed by the music.

Our top-notch musicians who performed at the concert are much sought after internationally, are heard on the soundtracks of classic Disney films, they have performed with the likes of Adele, Harry Connick Jr, as well as with world renowned orchestras, ensembles and bands in iconic music venues. We were delighted to be able to bring them to local audiences, including the historic Walthamstow venue you visited, to celebrate the New Year with 1920s jazz.

We like to offer a variety of classical music, jazz, Broadway, folk and more, which often feature piano, as well as other instruments. Around Christmas time, we mix things up in a similar way to allow people from all religious and ethnic backgrounds to find a concert they can enjoy. We always make the performers and music style clear on the our website; below is the information about the programme that was on the concert location page where you booked your tickets:

"Ring in the New Year - Roaring Good Time
Featuring trumpet and tuba

Say Goodbye to 2024 in style with Bach to Baby, at our last concert of the Season. Give a Cheer to What a Year! Forget your worries and your strife, put on your dancing shoes and let's have a roaring good time with music to toot. Shoobi doobi doo, oh yeah." The concert programme image was one of 1920s golden jazz age.

Thank you for trying our concert and taking the time to share your feedback.

Uncomfortable for adults and boring for children

The music was great and it’s a great idea but very poorly carried out. Not many adults can “watch” classical music at a concert, let alone kids and babies. The “interaction” in between songs was not entertaining at all and my 2YO said the show was bad “because of the lady talking”.

It’s a concert aimed at babies, baby pushchairs have to be put on the side, and so there is nowhere to put a pre walking baby. This means any baby under a year is forced to sit on a parent’s lap for over an hour on a wooden chair very squashed up. My 3 week old even got heavy in that amount of time and there was nowhere safe to put him.

The chairs were all moveable (not pews) and some very simple things could have been done to make it way better. There was a tiny space at the front for kids to move (wooden floor, no mats, where people walk with shoes), it was not big enough for all the kids, but a rule saying that an adult has to be with every child at all times (fair enough) meant it was definitely not big enough for kids to move around in. Every square inch of space was full with a sitting adult. A very simple solution would be to move the chairs around the outside, or have far less chairs, and have a huge area for kids to dance in in the middle, with soft padded mats for babies. Some sensory scarves etc would be great for dancing too.

There were 2 babies behind me who were around a year and not yet walking, and then and their parents left because the babies got restless confined to the parents’ laps and chairs.

The concert started 5 mins late, not a lot but with restless kids who’ve been there for 15-20 mins, it’s not great. Then it started with 5-10 mins more of talking about rules and info which we’d already been told on the way in. They could have just handed out leaflets with rules or signposted them so that the concert could start right away.

It’s an excellent concept and talented music playing, but very poorly executed. For the amount of money paid, and around 200 adults attending, there should definitely be some more effort put in from the organisers, to make it much more enjoyable for babies, toddlers and parents.

Hello Hannah

I'm really glad to hear that you liked the music and the quality of the performance. We love getting customer feedback to help us improve our concerts, and we especially love to hear from our young audience members, so thanks for sharing your 2YO's thoughts with us - you can tell them that we will certainly bear that in mind in future! For many people, attending a classical music concert is a new experience, and we find that most adults like to understand a little of what they are about to hear so they can connect better with the music. We try to strike a good balance between introducing and connecting the pieces and the performance. It seems it was not quite right for you or your little one on this occasion.

While I can appreciate it must be quite annoying and not as comfortable an experience without your buggy, we are not allowed to let customers keep their buggies with them in the venue aisles in case of fire. We have to keep all main fire exits clear so that everyone can get out safely in the event of a fire etc. Our customers' safety at a concert is paramount to us.

I hear that it felt repetitive for you to hear the concert expectations again once you came in to the concert. We find that not everyone reads the written guidance before the concert and we don't always manage to speak to everyone on the door as they come in at these busy Christmas concerts, which is why we feel it's imporant to say a couple of sentences before the performance, to ensure that children are kept safe and the adults who have come to listen are able to do so.

Christmas is one of the busiest times of year. Perhaps you might consider giving us another try this spring when there will be more room for the children to roam or for you to sit at the front where your 2YO can dance away to their heart's content. There are also smaller, more intimate venues that we perform in, where it may be more what you're looking for. Do get in touch with us directly and we'd be happy to point you to a venue that suits your needs better.

Thank you for trying our concert and taking the time to share your detailed feedback.

The worst "baby" concert I've been to

This really wasn't geared towards the age group its advertised for at all. It was the worst engagement with babies and completely extortionate for what it was. We arrived on time and found a space on the floor, which was very limited. Keeping a 19 month toddler still while they had a delay to the start time wasn't easy. Then to start with so much talking about imaginary fairy dust lines on the floor that 1-3 year olds are supposed to respect as a safety barrier for the musicians and not cross is ridiculous and shows no understanding of the age group. For babies not to be sat amongst the musicians in some way just doesn't work, they need to see what they are listening too. The musicians were out of sight from where I was sat and by the time we left after 15/20 minutes I scanned the room and there was zero engagement from any of the babies in the room. I don't blame them. The trumpet player gave a lengthy introduction before playing about how she will play 6 variations of the same tune and listed them all- 1 year old babies don't care about that and they don't get anything out of it. the same when the pianist gave a lengthy explanation of how she was going to play a jazzy version of Rudolph the red nosed reindeer without words- the room was full of humans who don't talk yet!
We do go to things like this and our son really does tend to respond well to quality music of all types, he really loves it and he's really interactive. This was the worst mismatch I've seen in London and more than double what is normally charged for some trully great sessions. I left feeling stupid for booking it without reading reviews and also feeling a bit scammed out of pocket and time.

Hi Tristan, thanks for taking time out of your day to leave a review. We're always happy to hear suggestions about how we can make our concerts more engaging and enjoyable.

We do give our audiences the option of sitting on the venue's seats, or on the floor near the stage if they want to be closer to the action. There was lots of seating in the pews and space to walk around if you preferred to move about, so please know you're always welcome to come and ask our team for help finding a seat you like, or to move about during the concert.

We have loved seeing the children and adults singing along to the carols, and the jazzy rendition of Rudolf the Red Nose Reindeer on piano. I'm really sorry to hear that it is not what you had expected.

We regularly review our concert introductions to make sure they are easy to understand and relavant. I've raised your feedback with the team so we can have a think about what we can do in future.

We pride ourselves in providing high quality family activities in central London. Our ticket prices reflect the costs of our top-notch musicians and historic venues, and each adult ticket of £15 allows not only 1 adult entry but also up to 2 children free entry. We understand that £15 can be a lot with the cost of living nowadays so we run sales every now and then too. So do keep a look out for the various sales we have, especially the subscriber only ones.

I'm sorry to hear that you didn't enjoy the instrument demonstrations and the brief explanations of the pieces. We try to strike a good balance between entertaining the children, but at the same time we never dumb down the music, so that adults can also enjoy thoughtful music, including the concept of theme and variations.

We're very sorry to hear that you didn't enjoy your time with us, and we appreciate all feedback we receive. Thank you for taking the time out of your day to try Bach to Baby.
