A Complete Disgrace – Avoid Banyan Tree Mayakoba at All Costs
We booked Banyan Tree Mayakoba for our 25th wedding anniversary believing their glossy promises of luxury, sophistication, and impeccable service. What we actually endured was nothing short of a disaster that left us furious and deeply disappointed.
The resort sold us outright lies in the form of a “luxury sunset cruise" and "Mayan Adventure snorkeling experience.” In reality, one was a cheap, tacky booze cruise that had nothing remotely “luxury” about it. The other, there was no snorkeling at all - we were literally told to hold our breath underwater while the guide discouraged the use of snorkels. It was insulting, degrading, and frankly unbelievable that Banyan Tree would attach its name to something so shoddy. This was supposed to be the highlight of our anniversary trip - instead, it ruined it.
When we voiced our disappointment, the “solution” was laughable - vouchers for more tours. As if the answer to being conned and humiliated on our anniversary was to throw us back into the same garbage experiences they profit from. There was no accountability, no care, no genuine apology. Just a shrug and a pathetic gesture that only rubbed salt in the wound.
And the property itself? Far from the five-star sanctuary they pretend to be. The villa pool looked tired and neglected, we were subjected to a noisy gas leaf blower due to next door leaving, which impacted the calming, relaxing experience we expected, the food/spa is seriously overpriced, even for a place sellng itself as 'luxury'. For a stay that cost us well into the five figures, we were treated like nothing more than walking wallets.
Banyan Tree Mayakoba is not luxury. It is false advertising wrapped in slick marketing, taking advantage of guests who expect better. We walked away feeling cheated, insulted, and robbed of an experience that was supposed to be meaningful.
We will never set foot in another Banyan Tree property again. And if you value honesty, respect, and receiving what you pay for, neither should you.
