Great experience at BCJ
My experience was great, tutor Judy is super detailed and accurate in the feedbacks. Overall the course it's very complete. I appreciate that they focus also on the "behind the scenes" side, they talk about taxes and bureaucratic aspects that are usually left behind and can cause fear to new freelance journalists.
They follow each student very well even being an online course.

British College of Journalism Course Review (2025/26)
Throughout this course, I enjoyed studying the importance of different writing techniques that are commonly used in freelance journalism, and how they can be implemented when planning story ideas that could be turned into saleable articles.
However, whilst the assignments were fairly simple and interesting, I didn’t feel as if the word counts in a few of them were efficient enough to be included in a saleable article.
Nevertheless, I felt comfortable in studying this course through distance learning, as it would allow me to focus on my studies properly without any distractions and submit assignments without tight deadlines.
I also think the assistance and feedback from my tutor has been very helpful, as I have understood the importance of the techniques used, as well as which areas I can improve on so that my future work can be published into saleable articles.
Therefore, I would recommend this course to anyone who is aspiring to be a freelance journalist in the comforts of distance learning.

Great information but would benefit from better access to tutors
The modules were informative and the assignments helped to consolidate everything learned. It was great to have an experienced tutor and I received useful feedback. However, access to the tutor was limited which was disappointing. It would have been great to be able to go back and forth a few more times to see if the reworked articles were ready to pitch. But overall, it was a helpful course.

Why studying remotely isn’t scary …
When I embarked on this course, it was a daunting task.
Having had little luck through school life, returning to studies in my 50s was scary.
The process of applying and beginning the course was super simple. You are kept in regular contact with support structure, very pleasant and helpful team members and then assigned your course tutor.
I found the whole process a joy to go through and would recommend BCoJ whole heartedly.
Big thanks to Erin that supported me through a bereavement nearing the end of my course and also to my tutor Judy who also gave honest and valuable tips and advice throughout the whole course.
I have full confidence in the BCoJ and enjoyed every assignment.

I have had the most wonderful experience with this course. I had a few personal ups and downs throughout the course and Judy and the team were so wonderful and supportive helping to accommodate me and still guide me through the course when with support and when I was able to.

The structure of this course appealed to me from the outset. This self-paced diploma is ideal for learners with other commitments. The student portal is easy to navigate and responses are prompt from all departments. I was assigned to journalist, Judy Yorke, as my tutor. She was excellent. Excellent course with detailed tutorials, relevant coursework and timely (and constructive) feedback from Judy and team
The course is very robust in terms of the content and topics it covers. Tutorials are detailed and extensive with links to further reading (should you need it). The course is a blend of reading and hands-on coursework, all of which aim to develop different components of writing and journalism. Judy's (senior tutor) feedback pulls no punches (in a good way) and always makes you think about how to better yourself at all points from article conception to creation. Erin and colleagues were extremely prompt in getting back to me on queries, making the overall student experience smooth.
All in all, a great course that I would highly recommend.

The attention to details is amazing! its enjoyable reading the tutorials. style of writing removes boredom from studying. I did the course within 10 weeks because i am always looking forward to learning.
