A comprehensive, fascinating course on the world of travel journalism

The course is incredibly comprehensive and so interesting. There is a wealth of information on what it takes to become a successful travel journalist and the course examines the many different ways you can become one, from writing for traditional print media to writing blogs and even making your own documentaries. My tutor provided valuable feedback on my assignments, highlighting what worked in my pieces as well as providing tips and ways in which my writing could be improved. I have picked up so many useful tips and can already see an improvement in my writing skills as a result. The team at the college are so helpful and kind to deal with and having the year to complete the course allows you to move through it at a pace that suits your schedule. I would highly recommend this course to anyone interested in pursuing a career in travel journalism.

The best course and investment I have made, all the staff and my tutor Daniel were so kind and understanding. They gave me three months extension when I passed my deadline to complete the course because of a misunderstanding from my part and not knowing the completion date without any extra charge. You get detailed feedback on your assignments and your own portal. The only thing I would love to see if the course material would be available in video or audio format as my eyesight is getting a bit blurry. But otherwise go for it!

Very Good Starting Point for Would-Be Travel Journalists

After years of thinking I wanted to become a travel writer but never doing anything about I undertook this 12-module course last year.

The course gives a wholesale overview of the disciplines needed to succeed (researching, writing, pitching different forms of articles, building a photo portfolio) as well as a run down of the industry itself (working with PRs, editors, how to brand yourself). The content is easy to digest and you can work through at your own pace albeit I chose to receive and complete one module a week. Each week there is an assignment (building up to writing a range of articles which you can then pitch to editors), which is where the course comes into its own.

I received detailed feedback from Dan Scott, one of Australia's best travel journalists, on each assignment, often received within 48hrs of submitting. This was incredibly helpful input into honing my writing style, avoiding certain pitfalls (NEVER describe somewhere as hidden gem!) and sharpening my craft overall.

Several months on from completing the course I still refer back to my notes and Dan's feedback as reference points - some of the material makes more sense when you're 'in the wild' so it's a useful ongoing resource.

Completing the BCJ course gave me both the grounding and confidence to start working freelance. Since completing the course, I have gained commissions from Travel & Leisure (twice), Conde Nast and BBC Travel amongst others and have been accepted into the British Guild of Travel Writers. I doubt any of this would have been possible without Dan and the team behind the BCJ and so would recommend this to any aspiring travel writer who needs a place to start.

The college met my expectations

The college met my expectations, giving me a solid foundation and the confidence to pursue professional travel writing gigs. Assignments were returned promptly and with constructive feedback. I earned my first commission while completing the course, so the financial investment has already repaid itself.

Some of the material felt a little dated and could do with a refresh to incorporate more recent social media trends (love it or hate it, SoMe is here to stay). However, the course is aimed at aspiring writers, and on that front it delivers on its promises.

Excellent Course for Beginners

The Ultimate Travel Journalism course provides a very useful and helpful introduction and overview to creating, developing, writing and editing a story.

The course is fully flexible and having the choice on when to submit an assessment made it a lot easier to manage my course.

Everybody involved with the college was not only very engaging and helpful with answers to questions and feedback to assessments, but they also provided personal examples they have used in their careers that helped me along the way.

My Review

I liked the prompt replies to queries and feedback. But the further into the course the reply time got longer and this maybe down to life and or work?

The course material in some parts is out date, ie no mention of the use of drones or camera phones, in place of large bulky and expensive dlsr cameras.

I do like the no pressure in completing and returning work assigments. That is an immense help if you have to work 9-5 like myself.

Overall though, I thoroughly enjoyed the course and thought it excellent value for money.

I now look forward to taking my first step into the travel writing industry...

The travel journalism course from the…

The travel journalism course from the British College of Journalism is a very well structured course with modules released over a period of 3 or 6 months. The course can be completed over an entire year, which gave me plenty of time to travel and gather material. It is packed full of valuable information and well worth the money. Dan Scott, who wrote the course, is an attentive tutor, as well as very constructive with his feedback. I was challenged and got an in-depth insight into the world of freelance travel journalism. Exactly what I was looking for as a complete beginner, but I believe it is also relevant to those with some experience who wish to broaden their knowledge and hone their writing skills.
Thank you Dan and the British College of Journalism

A great introduction into Travel Journalism

This was an excellent course, covering all aspects of travel journalism. The course tutor, Daniel Scott, gave really helpful criticism and insight into the quality of writing, as well as the business of travel writing and how to succeed.
It is the quality of the feedback and also the speed at which it is returned which makes this course so rewarding, and which really demonstrates the value of a course that is marked as against a DIY course.
I've now completed the course and am confident that I cam make travel journalism a successful career

A great course with lots of feedback and room for growth!

I've thoroughly enjoyed the Travel Journalism Course by the British College of Journalism. It provided me a clear framework of what a travel journalist needs to know to succeed in this business and touched upon various fields a travel journalist needs to take into account (not only the writing, but also the outreach to editors, the photography, how to sell your work, how to create a brand for yourself etc.). I particularly liked how my tutor Daniel provided me with feedback extremely quickly, leaving me with great ideas on where to improve for the next assignment. Hearing from leading experts in this field definitely made a difference! Thank you so much.

All you need to potentially be a travel writer

I did the course over 24 weeks, the 12 Tutorials contain very extensive materials covering a wide range of aspects of travel journalism, as well as links to further reading. Each tutorial has an exercise for yourself and 10 have an assignment that is assessed by the tutor, these are returned promptly with extensive critical comments and feedback. I’m not sure I’ll ever be a successful travel journalist but it has helped me to be more aware of places I visit and formulate a commentary to myself at least. A friend of my daughters has also completed the course and successfully sold an account of his travels so it can be done. The course does give you the background potential for travel journalism whether you can do it successfully or not will depend on the person.
