Broadbent & Co was set up in 1996 by Steven and Elizabeth Broadbent. Steve was the Chair of the National Network for Access Centres until 2013 and so very much involved in DSA developments at a national level. Their ethos was simple, the belief that "everyone must be seen and treated as an individual with their own individual needs. These needs must be identified in order for them to realise their own potential in education, employment and for life". In May 2018, Steve very sadly passed away. His son, Andrew, continues to follow in his footsteps and is the CEO of Broadbent Assist Ltd, Director alongside Elizabeth Broadbent, and he is also an active Needs Assessor.

I honestly was a bit nervous and clueless to what to say going in, but the whole experience turned out to be very pleasant. The person I had was immensely patient, friendly and understanding. That and the positive, casual tone of the conversation gave me the confidence to explain everything and the headspace to think over for some of the things I may have forgot to say.

Broadbent & Co carried out my DSA needs assessment in July 2023, it was done via a zoom call by my personal assessor 'Bev' who was brilliant! She was really friendly, helpful and attentive to my disability needs and also very knowledgeable about the assistive technology that would best help me during my time at university. She sorted everything out for me in a timely way and I am now about to start this years course with my DSA assistive equipment and software in place, which is going to be such a great help to me!
I would 'highly recommend' Broadbent & Co to anyone looking to have a DSA needs assessment and just wanted to say a big 'THANK YOU' in particular to Bev.
Ellie :-)

So helpful, thorough and patient. Every aspect of potential difficulty was covered and explained. Ben was very clear and made sure he was understood at every stage before moving on. He summarised the support at the end - he was excellent.

Ben was helpful, kind and knowledgeable about the different options available to support me with my dyslexia. He asked questions that really helped me think what I needed and was very supportive.

Amazing service! Second time I’ve used them. The staff know their stuff! I had an assessment with Ben this time, he was as just as great as Jennifer was the first time. I was made to feel comfortable and was offered really useful information that will help me moving forward with my studies! Thank you!

My experiance being an older disabled returning student and going through the DSA application process was quite a challenge being on my own as a 1st time applicant. I choose broadbent due to the location between myself and their assessment centre. for my study needs assessment as part of the DSA process. They now do virtual assessments over videoconferencing such as teams/zoom. The ease and Convenience of making the appointment and the availability variety of options available was really important. My assigned assessor was Ben B. He is such a credit to Broadbent I wish there was more individuals like him. I have had my own personal negative experience of trying to advocate and the complex nature of my conditions he took the time to emphasise and understand, and asked appropriate questions and allowed me to explain and give appropriate advice and answers. With disability there can be the grey area of what support can I get/ what do I need, as disability is as unique as each individual. Ben my assessor was very well experienced in using accessibility tools which is very important and supportive with all the options available and he gave me a good demonstration of each of them. And the appointment was not rushed in anyway he allowed for breaks, to have a drink which can be very important when the appointment is over a certain length of time and a clear agenda was given for both before, during and after in terms of what comes next.

I was really nervous about my assessment but Helen was lovely. She really took the time to listen to what I need and made me feel listened to. I was super happy with the turnaround on the report and the amount of detail in it too, nothing said wasn't noted.

I found Charlotte to be an astute, supportive and non judgemental assessor. She established my support needs (to achieve a Creative Writing BA) with apt listening skills, encouragement and some humour too. I felt both at ease and reassured through out. Thank you.

My experience with Broadbent has been great & steve (Assessor) has been fantastic from start to finish. He is very knowledgeable about health conditions which meant that I didn’t have to talk much about how it affects me and what support I actually require as Steve could recommend the support based on knowing about my condition. Recommendations were actioned very quickly and any issues and concerns I had after my assessment were dealt with efficiently. Joannne has been very helpful with any queries I had. Thank you guys!

Rosalyn was really friendly and made me feel comfortable. She shared her thoughts and opinions on what would be best for me. She didn't put any pressure on me either. If I didn't understand something she would explain it until I did understand it.

I had my assessment with Jennifer. I was very nervous and really didn’t want to have an assessment as I am usually embarrassed about explaining my disability. However, Jennifer was really understanding and reassuring. I was given lots of help and resources to engage in my university course. The assessment process was simple and easy, my mind was at ease afterwards. Couldn’t recommend Broadbent and Co. enough.

Friendly, helpful staff at the end of the phone who know about the whole DSA process in detail. My assessor Nikki was friendly, understanding and incredibly knowledgeable about ADHD. The recommended support is beyond anything I could have expected...software packages eg to create mindmaps, tutorials for using the software, mentoring, study skills tutorials. Any enquiry we have made has been swiftly addressed. 100% recommend
