Caravan size was perfect for the NC500

We did not get the caravan I rented (two berths) but a double bed. We did not care for being bunk mates. Some minor issue but a sound vehicle for 1000 miles. Offered a drop and go at no extra charge. Caravan size was perfect for the NC500.

Great holiday

Great holiday, easy to hire and get started with the van, nice new vehicle, drove well and very comfortable, all onboard facilities worked well.
Perfect way to see an excellent country with your own itinerary and at your own speed.
A couple of small faults with the vehicle did keep things interesting, probably best to try and check everything works properly before you leave the depot!

Motorhome wasnt clean

Motorhome wasnt clean. Time to recieved the motorhome was slow and repetitive to check the document. I,m Still waiting to get a call from them to solve the issue wih the cleaning.

Unfortunately We Won't Be Back!!

When we arrived, the ladies doing the Meet & Greets were lovely, but our lady just seemed a little lacklustre which would come back to haunt us whilst we were away.
So, basically, 4 days into our 10 day trip, we were sleeping on the settee at the rear end of the van. That morning my wife, who is of smaller stature got up, and as she did so, there was an almighty cracking sound and the front of the bed snapped in half, rendering the whole bed useless. So, because our guide on Day 1 hadn't shown us how to use the bed overhead (this was our first time in a motorhome), our only option was to sleep on a pile of cushions on the floor for the next 6 days. Which meant as soon as I got home it cost me over a £100 worth of Chiropractor Treatments to try and rectify the damage to my back.
On examination, the front panel of the bed, which had snapped had been drilled around 10 separate times in the region that snapped, which I have no doubt weakened it to the point where it gave in.
We didn't report this, because at the time we were in a campsite in Ullapool, literally the other side of the Country. So, returning wasn't an option.
The whole situation was exacerbated 10-fold when we returned to our lovely friendly lady at the end of our holiday, told her about the sleep deprivation we had endured due to the bed breaking, to which she announced, with no apology and a big grin on her face that "Oh yeah, we get that happen a lot, don't worry we won't charge you!!"
Suffice to say, it has been difficult writing this without the use of expletives.
And the worst bit about it, is that the staff were genuinely really friendly, but just didn't offer an apology or an recompense.

Some good and some to work on

Some good points and some points to work on.

I will do my best to divide it into categories but it will be long and detailed:

Pickup:
The pickup process for us was a real headache. I know it was not that way for everyone. We were coming in from Belgium and our banks apparently don’t work that well with their system. More specifically the security deposit.

They use an app on their tablet to ask for a security deposit. It offers a few possibilities depending on which bank you are. For us we could either use our bank app or a card reader. The problem was that the app on their tablet was unable to communicate with our bank for some reason. We then tried several cards from both our own as well as friends and nothing worked. We were there for about 3 hours.
They offered no alternative. There is no bank card machine or anything in the shop. We offered to make a bank transfer but then we could only get the vehicle after accounting department received the transfer in their account which in theory could take a few days. In the end we had installed and created a Revolut account. This finally worked but it threw a real wrench in our planning and made for a lot of stress. The girl at the counter confirmed to me that we were not the first people to have this issue. Give this they should really find multiple alternatives to make sure the pickup process runs smoothly.

Then came the explanation of how to operate the vehicle. This was a very very shallow explanation and given the fact I had no experience with campers I did not know which questions to ask, which became a problem later on during our trip.

To give a proper example: they showed us where the toilet cassette was and how to remove it but not how to actually empty or troubleshoot it.

There was a tv on board and a 4G modem, but they did not explain how to get connection or how to get channels on the tv after turning it on. Basically I felt like I had to figure out a lot on my own and a few features we did not get to use.

There were other things I had to really find out and discover on my own during our trip, which would have been nice to know of the get go (I.e. the beds have nets to protect you from falling off)

Vehicle state:

The state of the vehicle was clean and everything worked as it should (except for one burner on the stove but that was a non issue since there were 2 others to be used). However I think that a few additions to the interior of the vehicle would make it much better.

A few hooks should be installed to hang stuff of from when standing still. We often found ourselves having to put our clothes in a corner of a cabinet. Or when cleaning constantly having to rearrange stuff. A few hooks would go a long way.

The shower door was slightly out of its frame which made it impossible to fully close and if the vehicle is not 100% level the door constantly opens up. Not a great shower experience. There was also not really a place to hang wet or dirty clothes.

Drop-off:

The drop-off was almost perfect except for one point.

I will start with everything that I liked about it.

- we had some damage on our side view mirror, but also some minor scratches from tree branches. They only charged us for the side view mirror which in my opinion is honest and correct.
- the checkup was done in a timely fashion and the agent was very nice.
- after only a few days we had received an invoice for the repair of the damages and one day later we received our deposit back in our bank account with the repair charges deducted. We paid £130 for the repair. The invoice was detailed and unambiguous.
- the process was all in all very easy.

One point that could be worked on or better.

They have zero camper facilities on site. Meaning you have to empty grey and black water before returning the camper. Failing to do so may result in a $250 charge. The problem is that they are located in Edinburgh and there are almost no service points around. There is one camping not too far but they charge £35 which is insane. Combine that with a drop off between 8:00 and 10:00 AM, and it really becomes stressful to get everything sorted on that day.

I understand they don’t have to offer this service but understanding the region they operate and the services they offer, I don’t believe it should be out of the ordinary to expect this, especially towards customer satisfaction. We really had to go out of our way to empty our grey and black water.

Conclusion: I would give 1 more star if they improved the pickup process, half a star if they made some small tweaks in the interior and another half a star if they would invest in facilities for their campers.

We did have a great experience with the camper and I would consider booking here again. I hope they make some small tweaks so I can give 5 stars in the future.

Guests are encouraged to reach out to our On Road Support team if they need any assistance in the operation of the vehicle while out on hire.

For health and safety reasons, we do not empty toilet cassettes on site. Details to prepare the vehicle for the drop off can be found on our website, and in the Camping Companion in the vehicle. We advise guests to stay at a campsite the night before drop off so they can empty their toilet cassette and grey water there before returning to branch.

The Problems We Had

The pickup and drop off of the motorhome was a little confusing, but not bad, and the motorhome drove well. However the furnace in the motorhome would not work using either gas or electric power and when we contacted the company, their response took a couple of days and was to use the QR code to access the user manual. We had already done that. It apparently was not seen as a serious enough problem to address us personally. It was cold and for the entire trip we used the gas stove burners to provide heat. This is neither efficient or safe. The windshield wipers functioned in an absolutely crazy fashion and the lighting of the dashboard were totally unreliable. These are all problems that I would think should have been found before we were assigned the vehicle.

Great staff, very responsive

Staff were great, kept us well informed and a smooth handover and return. Also had a minor issue with side mirror hit by passing car and this was well managed. Also need to phone hotline a few times and response was quick and handy. Great experience!

First Class Vehicle, Living Quarters Below Speck,

The mobile home we picked up in Edinburgh was first rate, modern, clean, easy to drive and roomy. Just what was wanted for our visit to the Outer Hebrides.
The pickup was a bit of a trial, especially for us older folks, with all the technology needed for registering, when it had already been provided! We ( 3 of us)all thought it was an unnecessarily stressful time. We were very thankful for the young lady who put it all together for us in a couple of minutes.
On arriving at our friends house ( our first stop before boarding the ferry the following day) we checked the kitchen. It was found wanting in the utensil, cutlery and crockery departments. The oven grill too did not work. The toilet cassette was faulty.
Nothing of the above spoilt our holiday as we supplemented what was missing from our friends kitchen, but it was obvious that the kitting out of the van had not been done properly.
Those little things could have been so easily avoided.

Family holidays great!

Bunk Campers made our holidays super easy!
We booked the "Grande" model for 2 adults and 1 kid (we needed space) and it was perfect, very fast heating system with gas or electricity, comfortable beds, easy to drive...
All the stuff were kind with us.

Poor Communication and Disappointing Service at Pick-Up

We were very disappointed with the customer service and communication at pick-up. Our confirmation email stated clearly in bold that our camper would be ready at 1:00pm and not to be late to inconvenience them, so we rearranged our plans of sightseeing in Edinburgh to ensure we were on time. We checked in at 12:30 and were told our camper wasn’t quite ready. What followed was a four-hour wait with little to no communication. Other customers came and went while we sat there, and only when my husband asked repeatedly were we told the camper needed repairs after being returned. We completely understand that things happen, but the lack of communication was disappointing. Considering we received multiple reminder emails in the days beforehand, it would have been simple and respectful to notify us when the camper was returned damaged that the pick-up would be delayed. Instead, a whole afternoon of our holiday was wasted.

When we finally received our camper, the handover was rushed and poorly done. Fortunately, we have caravan experience, but for those who don’t, this would have been inadequate. Once on the road, we discovered the water tank was only half full, there were glass shards on the floor (which we kept finding for weeks), and several standard kitchen items were missing.

The outdoor tables and chairs we payed extra for were old, broken and not useable. This was very disappointing and when we mentioned it upon return no one cared or apologised

The camper itself was fine and served us well for three weeks, but the experience at both pick-up and drop-off left a sour impression. Considering the amount of emails I received prior to picking the camper up there was no clear guidance around dropping it off, like a checklist including things like LPG refilling, and we never received confirmation about our bond being refunded.

Extremely long queue when we checked in and overall poor quality

There was an extremely long queue when we went to pick up the campervan—we ended up spending over three hours at the office. The staff member who checked us in forgot to have us sign off on the damage report. Overall, the price was quite high considering the quality of the campervan. One of the rear windows didn’t work, the interior floor and toilet tap were partially damaged, and the tiny bathroom had no window. I wouldn’t recommend this rental.

Refusal to fix issues

Refusal to fix issues.

There were known problems when we took our van--the person who oriented us to the van was very clear on those issues... the battery and water systems that weren't accurate, wouldn't tell us fill lines, etc. There was an issue with almost everything in our van, but because we dealt with it and didn't say anything til we got back, they refused any sort of compensation or credit for a future trip to make up for it. Things were broken, the fridge froze all of our food and we had to throw it away, we never knew how much water or battery we had, it was awful. Also they refused to acknowledge they would give us a van that their employees knew systems didn't work in. The employee we returned the van to said, yeah, I remember you, this didn't work from the beginning...fill out this grievance form. We did, and the non-response was insulting.
