Use tele-health service for pink eye…
Use tele-health service and got a $400 bill 3 weeks later even with insurance while no insurance cost is $99. Billing department took 30+ minutes to answer.
Beware!
Carbon Health's website has a price list. For a virtual visit, they have the price of $99. Got on the virtual visit. Was on there for less than ten minutes and was told to go into the office. Saw them claim $400+ to my insurance and I have to pay $119 out pocket. On my visit in the office the next day, they said they were not in network and had me sign a notice. Didn't have much choice since I needed care. I checked the insurance's website and they are in network plus messaged and called them to confirm that they are indeed in network. The bill for the in office plus lab work submitted was $600+ and out of pocket was $210. The latter visit was high but I got a real professional actually doing something and there was lab work which was really a $350+ covid, flu and rsv test. Called them to get more info on charges. They said prices are for people who don't have insurance so they charge more to insurance holders. So they make more money off the insurance carriers and insureds by inflating the prices. At the end of the day, insureds are screwed. Be aware!
Shady billing practices and zero oversight
I wish I had read these reviews. Please do not go here. They have EXTREMELY shady billing practices.
I expressly told the woman at the front desk at the Austin Arboretum location I did not want my card placed on file. It's an FSA card and I need to authorize every charge. She said okay, then apparently proceeded to place my card on file without my authorization. I read EVERY form I signed, and I did not authorize it. She obviously did an electronic consent without my permission. Weeks later, I get a $10 bill and before I could even pay it, I get a "Thank you for your payment," and an email receipt. Huh???? Now, I have no idea if/when I'll get another random charge.
Then, billing just keeps rerouting you and the providers play dumb like they don't know what's going on. I advise EACH AND EVERY PERSON who has dealt with this to complain to the attorney general in your state if they accept these complaints. Then complain to the state medical board and your insurance company. Be sure to also name the provider. That's the only way companies like this will be held accountable.
Unprofessional
The doctor appointment was fine, my problem was really about the billing. My insurance company handled the scheduling of my appointment. My appointment was rescheduled to a day earlier than originally booked, but they managed to keep two appointments in their systems and charge me for a no-show. In other words, their mistake is something I should pay for. It's impossible to get a hold of them they threaten with collection instead of looking at the mail I've sent. Totally unprofessional. If capitalism works companies like this should go out of business.
HOT GARBAGE 0/10 DO NOT RECOMMEND
Carbon Health's billing is ENTIRELY unacceptable. They do not bill the right provider information on the claims, they refuse to help insurance straighten it out, they BLATANTLY lie to you about claim submittal. Their customer service is hot garbage. They balance bill you, they never call you back, they rarely answer the phones.
Carbon Health takes your money.
Carbon Health billing is the worst company in the world. I was charged $475 for a covid swab. Apparently, Anthem BC was no longer in network with them and they DID NOT TELL ME. I paid for my copay of $25 and got billed $475 with only 3 days notice. Called and got sent back $300. Appealed the claim with Anthem and they kept the charge. 4 months later I am billed $78. FOR WHAT?! Do not go to carbon health. I’d rather self treat myself than to ever step foot in one again. They are a SCAM.
FRAUDULENT BILLING
FRAUDULENT BILLING! I had an appointment with Dr. Romines at the Echo Park Carbon Health Center in November 2022. It was an ObiGYN appointment where I also had bloodwork done, general wellness exam, and the Dr. prescribed me a Gardasil vaccine.
I paid for the vaccine and visit, and was told to return for the second dose in a few months.
However, I was billed a month later by Quest labs for over $800 for my bloodwork. Then, in June, I came in for my second vaccine dose and was billed about +300. I paid these bills so they would not be moved to collections.
However, I have learned that these billing practices are ILLEGAL. I am uninsured, and I was not provided a Good Faith Estimate for the costs of the bloodwork (which must, according to the law) include the costs of third-party lab testing. I was not provided a Good Faith Estimate for the cost of the vaccine — which would be administered in 3 doses. This means the estimate should have included the cost of all 3 doses, plus the administrative costs. The No Surprise Billing Act requires that all reasonably predictable treatments that will be part of the scheduled prescriptions be included in the Good Faith Estimate provided to uninsured patients. The Estimate must be accurate within $400. I did not receive an estimate at all, not even orally.
I called the Echo Park Carbon Health Center about this issue and explained that I was not provided an estimate. The manager Earl Ruffin apologized, but he said that he was “completely unaware" of the law regarding providing a Good Faith Estimate.
It is illegal to bill for expenses I was not given a Good Faith Estimate for. This is because it violates patient consent to the cost of procedures. It is also incredible to me that the facility manager did not even know that it is a federal requirement to provide patients with an estimate. I have already filed a Personal Arbitration Claim, hoping to resolve this matter.
Billed 1 1/2 years later???
Over a year and a half after receiving sub-par medical service, I received a bill in the mail claiming I still owed Carbon Health $10. I waisted 30 minutes talking to a billing person that I could barley understand, and then someone who was supposed to be her supervisor, but had no authority. Neither could explain why their worker who took my medical card, and looked up my insurance, would have asked for the wrong dollar amount. Maybe, because 1 1/2 years ago that dollar amount was my co-pay? If this is a legitimate charge, why would they wait over 1 1/2 years to try and collect?
These people are criminals
These people are criminals. I went in for a UTI and they charged $720 which was not covered by my insurance. Do not go here. Ever.
Go anywhere else - when you try to contact them regarding your bill you will get the runaround and not be able to talk to a human being. They will try to wear you down.
Medical care is great. Billing dept is not so great.
Went to the facility in North Hollywood. Very welcoming environment, and everyone was exceptionally helpful and friendly. Brett was super patient with all of my questions and answered them thoughtfully and thoroughly and took all the time necessary to ensure everything was addressed. It'd been a while since I'd been to the doctor, partly because I didn't find visits that helpful in the past, but this experience changed my perspective.
If I were just evaluating the medical care aspect, I’d give them 5 stars. However -
I’m dropping my review from 5 stars to 2 after my experiences with their billing department. I’ve found the other reviews I’ve seen on Trustpilot accurate - the medical providers are excellent, but the billing department is shady. Double charging is common. Bills come over a year later for something you already paid for and they claim not to have received payment, and because they already have your card on file they just go ahead and charge it. I sent an inquiry and received a response over a week later, after the charge had already been processed. I’ve now switched medical providers because I just can’t trust their billing practices.
BUYER BEWARE
BUYER BEWARE! The office experience was quite nice, and I left feeling like a fan. I even started promoting them to my friends. And then the bill came. They OVERCHARGE for their services in an almost criminal way. I had a bone bruise on my elbow. The Dr. asked me if I wanted a sling. I didn't think I needed it as nothing was broken. He suggested I might need it for sleep. I took it. This sling can't cost more than $5. It is super flimsy—something you'd buy on Amazon, made in China. Carbon billed my insurance company $148 for it. My insurance paid $65 (way more than needed...hello, high premiums!), and now Carbon wants me to pay the remaining $85. I called them, and they told me too bad. You signed the waiver saying you'd cover any charges the insurance won't cover and that they couldn't do anything. They held their contracted billing service (Pacific Medical) accountable. They are overbilling for this sling for their profit, which is flat-out criminal. Now I am hearing more and more stories of the same from this place. Either stay away or TRY and get pricing...which I am sure they won't provide.
Wasn't so good
They were better last time. This time? Not good. My spouse came along and he agrees. The front desk girls and the triage person seemed alright.
But they had only one PA there, no doctor. The PA was trying to see all the patients and was dismissive and openly incredulous of our concerns. This wasn't ok with us, we needed his help. The X-Ray girl was rude, impatient, and nasty to me - she talked down to me, impatiently repeating her 'commands' in an exasperated, irritated tone like I was just some feeble old idiot who couldn't understand things. Wow. And we apparently committed some kind of **Sin** by bringing in Lab Results. They didn't want to see them and we noticed it generated some subsequent antagonism in the way we were handled.
You know, there are plenty of places who treat people with good regard and dignity. I wouldn't go in there if you are over 50 or interested in your own health. Listen, I'm 65, educated, and normally have it together. But today I was sick, looked like an old bag and my voice was very weak sounding. Maybe that was the invitation to bad treatment, I don't know. After so many days and nights of sleepless hell due to my symptoms, my husband and I both were being pro-active. Listen, we had pertinent information about a pre-existing condition I was diagnosed with in that same clinic (by an actual doctor) some months prior. I had been prescribed medication for it and had been battling that condition off and on for months. It's not an easy thing to get rid of. Now I had symptoms in a very nearby area of the body which I initially wrote off as a simple cold virus, but it had gotten worse and not resolved. Some of these new symptoms were similar to what I had experienced with the previous thing I had been diagnosed with, AND that previous condition was something that could easily spread. So it gave us reason to believe we should check this as soon as possible and at the very least, find out what we could do to lessen these symptoms meanwhile. So it did seem to make sense to come back to the same clinic where this had been diagnosed... right? OH SO WRONG it turned out to be. For one thing, the PA told me he had NEVER seen a case of this kind of thing and wouldn't even know what test to run for it. So he was balking and acting like none of this was valid. Hey, I already knew there was such a test. His not knowing about it? That's not our problem and no reason to not have it done. But he wasn't entirely saying NO, he just kept telling us he didn't quite believe us and asking if I had AIDS or DIABETES or something (which I repeatedly answered, no I don't). Anyway, he kept telling me how unlikely it was and said they don't diagnose things at that clinic based on TESTS, they diagnose by looking at you and talking about your symptoms. That was met with shocked, dead silence from us. He finally did agree to do the lab test, but since he had to go look it up first, he then let me know how I was holding him up from seeing other patients. Well, excuse me! As we drove away, I realized how much resistance and crap I had just politely taken in my attempt to simply take care of myself. It shouldn't be like this at doctor's office. And there should at least be a licensed doctor there.
A decent service, but...
The service, the people, the spaces are just as great as promoted. Nothing more to add.
But, the charging, especially when you have to pay co-pay, is tricky. I do not want to say I was overcharged considering the service quality, but the additional charges were not mentioned at first place. I think a clearer pricing would help the patients to know what they need to pay.
The people there were very nice, but company is shady.
The people there were very nice, but the fact is, they did nothing for me and billed me. First time I went, at the end I asked if I needed to sign anything and they told me they didn't do anything. so I did not owe anything. Second time, different people, exactly the same. They did not do anything for me, told me I owed nothing. 3 months later, $280 taken out of my account. Called billing, they said, "Yes sir, you had labs done." No I did not. I said what were the results if I had labs done? I did not, and yet, $280. Would not be a big deal to me if they had not told me that I did not owe them anything. Then they just take it. AMAZING! I want in on this! charge people for not doing anything? Like I said, if they had not told me I owed nothing, then I would have wrote it off as the regular office visit charge. But I was told I owed nothing. In my world, that means $0, not $280.
Scary clinician
Scary clinician. He made us feel very uncomfortable. Very unsettling experience
Excellent staff at PDX pop-up
I needed emergency COVID testing for my children and I to be able to return to our international home. After missing a flight due to another company's false promises, I walked into the Carbon Health pop-up site at Portland International Airport. There I encountered three different staff members, the lead site person, a registration person and the tech who performed the tests. All three gave excellent advice and the tech, Ryan, was so patient with my 7yo daughter who hates and fears the nasal swab. The results came back in about 14 hours and the web portal was very intuitive and gave clear, easy to print results for travel.
