Be warned!!! £119.05 Policy Cancellation Fee!!!
I am writing to warn others regarding the £119.05 cancellation fee applied following the termination of my son’s learner driver insurance policy.
Having passed his driving test, I cancelled my son’s learner insurance policy with Collingwood promptly and in good faith in order to comply with the agreement. I then had to pay a £119.05 cancellation fee for my son, who is a university student.
Passing a driving test is an expected and foreseeable outcome of holding learner insurance, and the cancellation arose solely as a direct consequence of compliance with my obligation to inform this company of a material change in status. The cancellation was therefore not due to misconduct, misuse of the policy, or any failure on our part.
Furthermore, I was on the phone waiting for 18 minutes before a disinterested ‘agent’ even spoke to me who didn’t apologise for the wait and waste of my time.
I consider the application of a cancellation fee to be disproportionate and inconsistent with the principle of fair treatment of customers.
How employees of this company sleep at night is beyond me. And guess what? They investigate it themselves and judge that it’s all legal. Legal it may be, but ethical? Justified? Fair? It really leaves a bad taste. I hope they are pleased with themselves.
So be warned people, there is a cancellation charge waiting for you when your teenager passes their driving test and it could be as much as £120!!!

Disgraceful cancellation charges!
The monthly prices were clearly too good to be true, as when it came to cancellation as my daughter had passed her test, she was charged £72. Its learner insurance so obviously the end goal is for the policy holder to pass, new young drivers are already robbed with their first year premiums when passing without having to pay to cancel their learner insurance. Needs making clearer when purchasing online! Absolutely disgusting!

Please do not use this company for new learner insurance. They are all friendly when you take out the policy, but totally different when you cancel or need a claim. Also be aware you pay £40 cancellation charge when you pass your test as policy then becomes void. Wish we used another company our friends used. Thought we had a good deal at the start. Please think twice before using Collingwood

Cancellation Rip Off
I bought an annual learner driver policy from Collingwood Insurance for my son for £256. The policy clearly stated that once he passed his driving test, the cover would no longer be valid, which I understood.
My son ended up passing with only a few weeks left on the policy, so I was happy to simply let it run to expiry with no refund due.
However, I was very surprised to receive an email saying I now owed a £40 “cancellation fee” because he had passed his test.
The policy had already been paid in full and, once he passed, it could no longer be used anyway. Charging £40 just to allow the policy to end feels unreasonable.
I can see from other reviews that many customers have experienced the same issue. Something to be aware of before buying.

Unexpected £40 fee when the policy lapsed which was not clear when taking out the policy. Apparently its in the T&C somewhere.....Be wary - cetainly won't be trusting them again....

An unreliable insurance company. My windscreen replacement was denied and I wasn't informed that I don't have excess on it. Avoid this insurance company by all means as others are better

Very knowledgeble, very helpful. Explained everything well and im happy with the terms of the policy. Good on Collingwood to change the exit structure to be less of a finanacial pitfall for customers who need to end the policy early!

Was not clear about the cancellation policy. Stated £40 but once my daughter passed after only 1 month of learner insurance they have charged me £175!!

Caution for Learner Drivers
I found the premium quoted to insure my learner son to be competitive however, once he passed I used live chat to ask about a change to the policy. They don't insure new drivers and cancelled the policy immediately while I was on on live chat so I as a named driver was also not insured. I asked about a refund for the balance of the premium; there is no refund after month 6 of the policy! Maybe the premium wasn't that competitive after all.
