I paid for a learner driver policy for my son and the price for the year was reasonable. So paid the premium for the whole year and was happy till I saw the cancellation fees when my son passed his test! OMG! I couldn't believe it. Not only they did not give me a refund for the 4 month reaming of the policy, but they charged me a huge fee for cancellation!!!! They never advised me or my son at the point of cancellation of this hidden cost. We only found out after the cancellation was complete. Apparently there is a clause within the policy that you have to cancel it once you pass the test. You cannot let the policy run out. This is not a legal requirement. It's purely there to make more money out of the policy holder. Had we known that, we would have not bothered to cancel it. I find this practice very unethical as most learner drivers are on limited budget with all the costs involved in learning to drive. Now my son has to fork out more to buy the car he was saving for because he has to pay this completely unnecessary and unexpected fine (effectively that is what it is). Clearly most learners will pass their test part way through their policies. So this is a good and guaranteed money maker for this company. Please factor in these hidden costs when you consider taking out a policy with this company.

Bought for my son as a learner driver. Beware all the hidden costs that you will face to cancel once you pass! Absolutely a ripoff for teenagers.
Will not use again for my other children and sent an email warning my work colleagues to avoid.

At first they seem like a professional, friendly and fairly priced company but most of the positive reviewers are still insured with them because they have yet to pass their test. Read the small print very carefully! They do not insure drivers once they've passed their test so the policy is then cancelled. WATCH OUT! There is a cancellation fee for everyone. Sneaky behaviour to get our business in the first place. What they lose on customer loyalty (as their offer becomes obsolete once a driver passes) they gain on hidden fees. I suggest you pay a bit more for a decent insurance company with no hidden charges.

Unfair £40 Policy Cancellation Fee.
I am writing to raise a formal complaint regarding the £40 cancellation fee applied following the termination of my son learner driver insurance policy.
My son , Upon successfully passing his driving test, I notified Collingwood in order to update his circumstances, acting promptly and in good faith. I was then advised that the policy could not continue and must be cancelled, with a £40 cancellation fee applied and I was threatened that if we do not pay this cancellation fee then they will contact the debt collection against my son who is a university student.
I dispute the fairness and reasonableness of this charge. Passing a driving test is an expected and foreseeable outcome of holding learner insurance, and the cancellation arose solely as a direct consequence of compliance with my obligation to inform you of a material change in status. The cancellation was therefore not due to misconduct, misuse of the policy, or any failure on our part.
In these circumstances, I consider the application of a cancellation fee to be disproportionate and inconsistent with the principle of fair treatment of customers. I respectfully request to wave the £40 fee as a reasonable and appropriate resolution of this matter.
Please treat this letter as a formal complaint under your internal complaints procedure and confirm the expected timescale for resolution. Should this matter not be resolved satisfactorily, I reserve the right to escalate the complaint to the Financial Ombudsman Service without further notice.
