DO NOT USE THIS CAR HIRE

We rented a car through ECH for a recent family wedding in Tuscany. When we got to the counter at Pisa Airport the staff told us the booking we made online wouldn’t be accepted so we had to take out a new policy, with their extra insurance at a higher price than we had booked with. We were only hiring it to get to the wedding venue a couple of hours away so just went with it… we wish we really hadn’t!
The car wouldn’t start again after the first initial journey stating ‘System Malfunction, Contact Dealer’, meaning we were trying to get around rural Tuscany for wedding events which was impossible as there are no taxi companies in the small area. We called ECH and they said to contact the International Roadside Assistance number on our rental agreement - which they hadn’t given us.
When we finally got this through, we spent the morning of the wedding going between the rental company and the assistance team (who kept just hanging up on us) trying to get the car sorted. This was so stressful and caused me many panic attacks as we were simultaneously trying to attend the wedding. Meanwhile, my husband came back from the shop to see that the ECH company had tried charging his card €5,000, then when that didn’t go through €4,000, then €3,000 right down to €200. This was horrifying that they would be trying to take those amounts, when we had been advised on the phone because we had their insurance it would be free of charge.
We tried ringing and emailing them again, to no avail. They went completely silent on us and would not return our calls or emails and have not had any response from them since that morning. The car got returned to them by the assistance team and they have ignored all attempts for us asking for the deposit back and for an explanation as to why they tried to charge us €5,000 fraudulently.
We have made a complaint with the company and now will be making one with the EU Commission.
Do not waste your money renting with them, they honestly made what should have been a lovely weekend truly awful and stressful. They are just grifters out to get what money they can.

Overall everything was ok. From my experience the airport sales team need to improve their service, because lady I had to deal with was not the most helpful. The car itself had no issues at all. Return was super easy and staff member was excellent.

They gave me a dented Toyota Aygo. When I returned it, the employee pointed out a barely noticeable mark on the front bumper, which was definitely from the previous accident. He told me it wasn't my fault but that he would report it. I asked him several times in front of witnesses, and he always told me I wouldn't be charged anything. I dropped the car off, and the next day they charged me €146.00. I was deceived by the employee at Catania airport. Terrible service. I will never rent from ECH again.
