Over the top fees/commission etc...

No problem with the auction or the delivery but the fees and commission+++ are a rip-off! These were another 40%....!

Elmwood’s charges a buyer’s premium of 25% + VAT (30% in total), which is consistent with the wider auction industry. As your bids were placed via The Saleroom, an additional online bidding fee of 5.94% (4.95% + VAT) was applied by their platform, which is shown on the applicable fees on the website. Within the Buyer's Charges section of the invoice is also a pre-emptive and optional £20 shipping fee.

For future auctions, you are very welcome to bid directly with us at elmwoods.co.uk, where this additional online fee does not apply.

Sadly I would not recommend Elmwood

Sadly I would not recommend Elmwood. Their pieces in auction are heavily overpriced. Additionally they are very outdated when it comes to a shipping and payment system. You have to pay for items via bank, not an online portal so you never really know if they have recieved the payment in real time. I also had to chase for my shipment. They never sent out the item until I called them and then the next day I called them again to ask if the item was coming as I never heard from the shipping company. I was then asked “ did you call the shipping company?” When they were the ones who organising the shipping! They come across as lazy, unorganised and I simply wouldn’t recommend them .

Thank you for your review and I am sorry that you found your experience with Elmwood’s to be a negative one - this is not the standard we aim to provide.

I have reviewed this with the team, and specifically our Post Sale department, and we can see that a request was made to hold the item you had won in our 31st March auction until the 9th of April. The parcel was subsequently shipped on the 10th of April.

Whilst we did aim to assist and have the item dispatched on the 9th, this coincided with one of our auction days, and unfortunately we were unable to get it out that same day. Following your call on the 10th, the item was prioritised and shipped immediately.

In terms of pricing, all items are offered at public auction, where final values are determined by competitive bidding between buyers rather than fixed retail pricing. Estimates are provided as guidance, but prices achieved reflect market demand.

Bank transfer remains a widely used and secure method within the auction industry and we accept card payments in person or up to £500 if the cardholder isn't present. That said, we appreciate that instant confirmation can be preferable and whilst we did receive your payment on the 1st of April, of which we thank you for fast payment, this is something we are continuing to review as part of ongoing improvements to our systems.

We aim to be a fast, modern auction house and do take feedback seriously and are always looking to improve. If you would like to discuss this further, I would be more than happy to speak with you directly.

Utterly shocking customer service...

Utterly shocking customer service...
Elmwood's courier lied about not being able to find my house, informed me this was because Elmwoods had used an incorrect address. This was not true. Having taken an entire day off to receive this parcel and for Elmwoods to not consider this or the inconvenience is really quite shocking.
In communication with Elmwoods I asked for a call, no one called me until I left this negative review.
The parcel was delivered on another day to my neighbour, no one called or emailed from Elmwoods to check this however and eventually I was able to retrieve my parcel from my neighbour.
Their response blames their courier but doesn't recognise their own poor service.
I did indeed ask for a refund instead of an attempted 2nd delivery however Elmwoods never responded to this request or even recognise this, but instead instructed the courier to attempt a 2nd delivery but failed to inform me of this.
The wish to not take any ownership for this is understandable but disappointing.

We’re sorry to hear that you feel this experience with Elmwood’s has been a negative one, as this is not the level of service we aim to provide.

Having reviewed the matter, the issue arose due to a delay with DHL, which resulted in the parcel arriving one day later than scheduled. The address was double checked against what was provided to the courier and there was no discrepancy on our end. We appreciate how frustrating delays can be, particularly where time has been set aside for a delivery.

We did engage with both yourself and DHL, including escalating the matter to our account manager, to better understand what had occurred. DHL will usually attempt to redeliver a parcel 3 times before reaching out to us as the shipper for direction as to what to do next as standard.

Whilst we carefully select our couriers, issues of this nature can unfortunately arise from time to time and are not always within our direct control. We are, however, pleased that the parcel was ultimately delivered safely.

Fair auction estimates

Auction estimates were fair as a substantial number of final bids/prices fell within or close to the estimate ranges. Post sale service was also very good with responsive communication.
