I sought help for my son who seemed to struggle with the technique of constructing his answers to the point. This effected his grades across all writen subjects.
Laurence has not only trained my son in this skill but also helped him in all aspects of exploring his ideas and opinions in a more structued way. I have seen my son grow in confidence and more importantly happy and motivated.
Laurence not only addressed my son's weak points on the subjects but very professionally got the best out of my rather introvert son, normally anxious around people.
My son found the 2 hour session blocks more productive. My son says what he found most helpful was that Laurence guided but gave him the freedom to explore and figure things out. I will happily recomend Laurence, I am extremely thankful for the wonders he has worked within a short period of time.

Laurence has done a fantastic job getting my son ready for his English Language and Literature GCSEs. My son excels in sciences and maths, but has struggled with the way that English is taught at his school. Through his lessons he has developed the tools / techniques in a more structured / formulaic manner, and in a way that he is able to understand and work with. As a result, he is much more confident and at ease with the subject, and will undoubtedly get a better final grade than if he hadn't had his lessons with Laurence. I would highly recommend Laurence for any parent considering an English Tutor for their child.

My son has had a really positive experience with Laurence. His confidence has grown over the last 7 months and his anxiety around English has diminished. My son looks forward to his weekly sessions and always says how beneficial they are. Laurence’s approach has suited my son and his learning style. As parents we have been extremely pleased with how our son’s perception and attitude towards English has changed. But most importantly we now have a happier more confident and motivated child.

Laurence has been an amazing tutor for our Ukranian guest Kyra. He has been so generous with his time and formed an excellent rapport with Kyra. She has developed her comprehension and creative writing skills through his expert guidance and feels very confident that she will pass her GCSE. He has gone above and beyond with setting extra work and marking to help ensure she gets the grade she deserves.

My daughter, dyslexic and now yr 12, failed her GCSE English last year despite getting 7/8/9s in maths and sciences. I am so thrilled we found Laurence through an internet search. His teaching techniques have clicked with my daughter; and his gentle, encouraging approach have boosted her shattered self confidence. After just 8mths tutoring, she is now achieving solid/high 7s in mock English papers! I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Laurence to anyone needing English support-he is simply amazing!

My son been a scientist always struggled with the interpretation skills needed in English. Having Laurence as his tutor gave him the skills and confidence to navigate this area of uncertainty and together they created an A / 9 grade student. Laurence managed to simplify and make patterns in very complicated texts and took the overwhelm of studying English away into a subject my son really enjoyed. The interpretation skills he learned he carried forward in other subjects (especially geography and RE) and he too attained 9’s in these subjects. Above all Laurence was patient, thorough and instilled a confidence in my boy where other teachers had failed.

I asked my daughter to describe Laurence for the title of this review and I think she summed him up perfectly. She has always been much stronger with Maths and Science and at the beginning of Year 11 had lost her confidence with English, this was reflected in a drop in her predicted grades. I am so glad that my friend told me about Laurence, my daughter was very happy at the end of her trial lesson and was extremely keen to continue. Her confidence has increased and so have her grades, she really enjoys her lessons and has found them so helpful. We would thoroughly recommend Laurence if you are considering an English tutor.

My son has always struggled with English and I am so so happy I came across Laurence. My son has only been having lessons for a couple of months with Laurence and already we are seeing the impact. His grades have jumped from a 3 to a 5 within this short period. I am so very grateful for everything you have done to help my son achieve this. He will definitely get to do his A levels with these results and can only get better within the next 2 months.

A series of unfortunate events in our son's school involving an ever changing set of English teachers and very little continuity made us look for external tutoring in English. Laurence was fantastic in all respects. He knew exactly how to help, his material was up to date and very relevant, and he had a significant effect on our son's progress. He is obviously very passionate about his work, and extremely effective. Highly recommended.

When our son didn’t pass his English GCSE, he told us he’d never be able to. What Laurence has done, above all, is given him the confidence to put pen to paper and have a go. Our son now feels he’ll go into the exam able to pass, which is a great turnaround. The 2 hour sessions involve time for students to work independently. If they are finding something too tricky, they can contact him for more support. Laurence then builds on their work and demonstrates how to develop it effectively. No homework, no dry lists of words to learn (“a simile is…. A metaphor is…” etc.); everything is completed in the session. Our son hasn’t once complained about logging on for it, which is honestly something I would never have predicted. I never watch or listen in so can’t comment on Laurence’s specific style; I just know that it’s working for a reluctant learner. Thanks Laurence.

We were recommended Laurence for GCSE English tuition and how grateful we are that happened!
Our son is a naturally strong with mathematics and science however struggles with the more creative subjects such as English.
The teaching methods that he uses with my son are so compatible with him and he really understands how my son thinks and learns..this was almost from the word go.
My son really enjoys his lessons with him and since having the sessions with Laurence, the majority of his grades have improved..not just in English!
I cannot recommend Laurence enough, he has been a godsend. He is a dedicated and professional practitioner, which these days you do not often see and I am very grateful that we still have him til the end of the academic year.

Laurence is a first class English tutor and he has helped my daughter enormously. She enjoys Maths and Science much more than English but Laurence’s methods are really having an impact.

I must say that Laurence is also very kind and patient. My daughter suffers with anxiety and he has been very understanding and helpful when she hasn’t felt able to fully participate in a lesson.

Our younger son is best described as lovely, sociable and bright, but also as bored in school and not studious. He had been an enthusaistic and creative writer and voracious reader in primary schoool but, with the constraints of the curriculum and so many other better things to do with his time, once in secondary school he had slipped behind (and, of course, the pandemic did not help). With English being a core subject, and with writing underpinning success in so many other disciplines, we were desperate to get him some help. I found Laurence by luck and we arranged to speak. It was immediately apparent that he totally understood our situation and that he really 'got' our son too. Since then, Laurence has engaged our son in weekly online sessions – and this has given him renewed confidence as a writer and student. We could not have found a more enthusiastic tutor. Those weekly sessions are some of the hardest work our son does, and he knows it, but the results are carrying across into other disciplines. We highly recommend this tutor.

My son hadn’t got the grade he needed for English so we booked in 8 sessions. They were fitted round the times we could do, were v interactive and my son was v positive about the style of teaching and the impact it had. He made previously difficult concepts easier to understand and pick up and he went on to pass the December exam. Definitely recommend.

My son always struggled with English Language due to his dyslexia, dyspraxia and autism and only gain a 3 in his GCSE. He resat in the October and thanks to Laurence’s help gained a 5 after only 6 weeks of tuition. Laurence was friendly and adapted to my sons needs.

A brilliant outcome !
After working hard for his GCSE mock examinations my son was at a complete loss trying to work out where he was 'missing the mark' in his English examinations and ending up with 3s and 4s. As a top flight student in maths & science, he clearly needed help to turn this around and prevent it from limiting his next move. As a Mum I really didn't know where to begin to help then I found Laurence and what a transformation! Thank you Laurence, two 6s on results day and a spring in his step as he moves on to 'A' Levels at sixth form college.

My daughter was predicted GCSE grade 5 in both English literature and English language. We knew that she could do better than this, and all she needed was a good tutor to refine her English.
Luckily we came across Laurence’s website and started lessons with him on a weekly basis, and after only a few lessons we started to see improvements.
Laurence’s techniques helped improve my daughters essay writing skills, structure and also her time management.
We were delighted when my daughter received her results that she had gone up by 2 grades to a grade 7 in both English literature and English language. Without Laurence’s help this would not have been possible!

I can't praise Laurence highly enough. Both his teaching style and engagement with my son were excellent. We approached Laurence in November 2021 as my son was struggling with English despite achieving high marks in other subjects. English just didn't click with him. After seven months with Laurence he improved from grade 4 at mocks to a grade 6 GCSE result in Literature and from a grade 5 in mocks to a grade 8 GCSE result in Language! We opted for the two hour per week option which, being a 'step by step' problem solving approach to English, suited my son's learning style. Laurence gave him loads of tips and hints for successful exam technique and boosted his confidence in, and enjoyment of, the subject. I would highly recommend. Thank you Laurence!

My daughter was predicted 7/8/9 in most of her subjects apart from English (6). She didn’t know where to start revising for English and never would have practiced essay structure or writing on her own- somehow Laurence had her doing this without even a grumble ! We asked Laurence for help only a couple of months before GCSEs as she started panicking her English may stop her getting into the sixth form of choice. With Laurence’s help she managed amazing grade 9s in both English language & literature. We’re so grateful & thoroughly recommend Laurence’s tutoring.

My son has always struggled with English Language preferring Maths or Science. He is more of a facts boy rather than imaginative. All through years 10 and 11 and in his last Mocks, he was tracking a Grade 3 which was a concern.

The school didn't seen overly concerned but knowing the impact it would have on our son with potentially having to resit his GCSE and limiting his options going forward, we chose to look for a tutor that would be able to help and offer guidance.

I found Laurence online and after an initial trial run with subsequent feedback, we chose to proceed further with the Premuim package as time was relatively short. My son didnt actually have any of the face to face or verbal contact with Laurence during his time but the comprehensive feedback provided following each task meant that we could sit down with our son and work through it, drawing on his strengths and weakness and how to improve the content and structure of his writing.

My son and I are thrilled to say that he received a Grade 5 in his English Language and is now able to enrol at 6th Form to study the A Level subjects he really wanted. No resit, no more English Language (certainly not one of his A Level choices) and he is able to look forward rather than back. The smile on his face when he opened his results yesterday was priceless being the first grade he looked for and whilst it was maybe only a 5 to some people, in his eyes it sits up there with the 7's he received for math, science and engineering. He even admitted the extra work and effort was worth it.
