The hire car was badly damaged when I picked it up. I didn't expect this much external damage with Europcar. This hire cost €35 per day (we did not buy extra insurance) with unlimited mileage.

Appalling service, and no refund

From our recent experience, I would strongly recommend that nobody uses the Europcar car hire company. We hired a car from the main airport in Lanzarote but on inspection we found the car was in poor repair, especially the tyres which were badly damaged and totally illegal, so we requested a different car. We were given a second car which was initially ok but it broke down a few days later. We contacted Europcar as instructed and they said we must arrange and pay for our own taxi back to the aiport, whilst they sent a breakdown vehicle to pick up our rented car. They gave assurances that we would be repaid the cost of the taxi, and that we would immediately be given a replacement hire car from the airport (they stated that they had many other cars available). On arrival at the airport, we were told categorically that they had no alternative car for us to hire!! However, after much discussion we were given a replacement hire car so clearly they were lying to us initially - in fact the replacement car was an upgrade, and it served us well for the rest of our holiday (which was good and to their credit). However, on return home we applied (together with copies of all paperwork) for a refund of our taxi fare ( 43 Euros). A month later, after a lot of hassle, we eventually received an email stating that the refund had been approved and that the money would be refunded to our account in a few days time. However, no payment arrived and we have spent the past 4 months trying to get a proper response and a refund from the company. Every email they send says that they are referring our request and complaint onto a different department and often in a different country (Spain, UK and Finland so far!) but the matter has still not been resolved. The company's response overall has been utterly appalling and disgraceful, and I would discourage others from using this company.

Seems to be some sort of grifting scheme

On arrival we were obliged to wait for over an hour to collect our booked vehicle at the Europcar desk in a sweltering +35°c. No option to fast-track available here despite paying top price months ago.

I collected the (different to reseserved) vehicle and noted in daylight the next day that the car had more than 20 separate areas of paint damage and dents. I photographed some of them but didn't do a 100% coverage film. My mistake!

The car had a faulty stereo system which turned it's own volume up to maximum all the time and a rubbery gearbox which may or may not have been faulty, overall this was a car that hadn't been looked after.

On return to Europcar the agent started examining the entire car in minute detail. She noticed an inch long scratch on the rear bumper. It's impossible to say it it was there before but given the very poor state of the vehicle it would not have been a surprise. There was other damage all around that area. Given the extensive previous damage which Europcar Mallorca has not attempted to fix, it would seem that this is an exercise in extracting money from Europcar customers. The car was not damaged by us, but it's impossible to prove. This is a scam.

I have separate to cover damage but I take exception to the cynical pretence of "finding new damage", long delays and a sub-standard vehicle. I am a regular Europcar Priviledge customer but I will be switching to another car rental agency if this matter is not correctly resolved.

I have tried to send this information to Europcar on their app a few times but it says 'sorry there's been an error try again later' and wipes out 10 minutes of input each time.

Watch out for fake claims about damage…

Watch out for fake claims about damage on the car. We rented a car for one week. After return they claimed we had made several damages for which they claim 500 Euros. Obviously a scam. Be careful and take a lot of pictures before leaving the parking area.

Europcar at Valencia Airport.

Europcar at Valencia Airport.

I collected my vehicle from the P1 parking area at approximately midnight. However, due to an error made by the staff member, the incorrect vehicle registration was recorded on my rental agreement and was not correctly registered with the airport parking system. As a result, we were unable to exit the car park.

The desk was closed so I was left stranded in the middle of the night with my three children, one of whom became unwell due to the heat. With no assistance available, I had no choice but to pay €124 for an Uber to take my children and me to our hotel, while my husband was forced to remain alone overnight in the airport car park with the vehicle until the Europcar desk reopened the following morning.

This experience completely ruined the start of our holiday. We lost many hours of our trip, incurred unexpected expenses, and endured significant stress and inconvenience, all as a direct result of an error by Europcar.

I have lodged a complaint and expect Europcar to reimburse the €124 taxi fare in full and to provide appropriate financial compensation for the considerable inconvenience, distress, disruption to our holiday, and the unnecessary overnight delay caused by their mistake.

A Shocking Experience at Europcar Barcelona Gran Via

I have rented from Europcar several times in the past, but my experience at the Barcelona Gran Via branch on 19 July 2026 was by far the worst customer service experience I have ever had.

I first spent almost an hour on the phone with Europcar Customer Service trying to extend my rental. During two separate calls, I was informed that Europcar's own system could not process the extension because my vehicle registration was incorrectly linked to another rental agreement belonging to an unknown organisation. I was instructed to visit the Barcelona Gran Via branch to resolve a problem that was entirely caused by Europcar's internal system.

When I explained this to the branch manager, instead of helping, he sarcastically told me that perhaps I should become the CEO of Europcar if I knew how the company should improve its systems. I found this comment disrespectful and completely inappropriate, especially as it was made in front of other customers.

I explained that I was not complaining about the vehicle but about the administrative process and that I expected to be treated professionally. His response was to threaten to cancel my rental.

Despite this, Europcar accepted a payment of €48.17 to extend my rental. Only after taking my money did the manager refuse to let me continue using the vehicle. He tore up the extension paperwork, took my car keys, switched off the engine and locked the vehicle.

Inside the car were all of my personal belongings, including my Golden Retriever, while the outside temperature was approximately 35°C. I repeatedly asked to retrieve my belongings and my dog, but I was made to wait unnecessarily. I found the entire situation extremely distressing.

During the incident, I also recall hearing remarks that I interpreted as homophobic after the manager noticed the rainbow bandana worn by my dog. Because discrimination is a serious matter, I have asked the relevant authorities to investigate the circumstances together with the audio recording and other evidence.

The situation escalated to the point where I felt I had no choice but to call 112, and the Catalan police attended the branch.

I have an audio recording of almost the entire incident, documentary evidence of the telephone calls, payment records, rental documents and witnesses. I have submitted formal complaints to Europcar and will also pursue the matter with the Catalan Consumer Authority and the competent authorities.

No customer should be treated with disrespect, publicly humiliated, prevented from accessing their belongings, or placed in a situation that requires police intervention because of the conduct of a branch manager.

I sincerely hope Europcar investigates this incident thoroughly and ensures that no other customer experiences similar treatment.

Avoid!

Avoid Europcar – Unfair Charges and Extremely Poor Process

I’ve used Europcar multiple times before without issue, but my most recent experience has completely changed my view. I would strongly advise others to think twice before booking with them. When I read reviews beforehand, but after I had booked online via their app, I thought to myself that these poor reviews I was reading, was just very unlucky, because I have never had a problem. However...

After returning my rental, I was hit with over £100 in charges for a TINY scuff on the wing mirror casing (1cm) which looks like it could just be rubbed off, and I can categorically confirm I had not cause it. What’s most concerning isn’t just the charge itself - but the way the entire process is set up.

At collection:

The car was parked in an incredibly poorly lit garage, making any meaningful inspection nearly impossible.
I was required to sign the agreement before even seeing the vehicle. No staff member walked me through the condition of the car.

At no point was I clearly informed of any “24-hour damage reporting rule.” The only reference was buried in Spanish on the agreement, with no explanation and literally all it said was "Observaciones 24h damages" - with an email address. For a non-Spanish speaker, this is completely unreasonable and lacks transparency - I hired the vehicle from an airport!

At return:

A lady carried out an in-depth inspection with a torch, highlighting this "damage". I disputed the damage immediately. Staff were dismissive and uninterested, telling me “you can go now”. I felt pressured to sign paperwork without a proper opportunity to challenge the claim, they just said "we need to record it for the next customer". I reiterated I did not accept the damage and I was dismissed over and over again.

Europcar has provided no clear evidence that this damage occurred during my rental—no proper before/after photos, no repair invoice, nothing to justify the charge. Yet they still applied:

Damage fee
Additional admin fee

Together, these were completely disproportionate to what is, at most, normal wear and tear.

To make matters worse, the vehicle itself wasn’t in perfect condition when I received it (less than a full tank of fuel and an electrical fault), which I chose not to make an issue of at the time, because I'm not petty - unlike Europcar.

Overall, this experience felt less like a genuine damage claim and more like a revenue-generating exercise at the customer’s expense. It is even listed on the invoice as "Other revenue".

I am now formally disputing the charges and pursuing recovery. Europcar has rejected my dispute but still refuses to provide any evidence (no before/after photos, no repair invoice). This only reinforces my concern that these charges are not being applied fairly.

My advice:

Take extensive photos/videos at collection and return.
Do not rely on their inspection process.
Be extremely cautious—especially in poorly lit collection areas. Report any unknown damage within 24 hours.

Unfortunately, what should have been a straightforward rental turned into a stressful and disappointing experience. I will not be using Europcar ever again. Their charges have resulted in lost revenue from a once loyal customer, which seems ludicrous, for the sake of a £100 charge!

Well done Europcar - excellent business acumen!

We will NEVER use Europcar again

We will NEVER use Europcar again. From the moment we arrived, our experience was extremely disappointing.

We hired a car from Palma Airport on 29 June 2026. When we arrived at the Europcar desk in the main terminal at approximately 10:30pm, it was closed, with no signs or information explaining that customers needed to use a different kiosk in the multi-storey car park. We tried calling their customer service number, but the automated message simply stated that Europcar was open and gave no guidance on where to collect our vehicle.

Fortunately, another customer who was also looking for Europcar showed us where to go. Without her help, we would have had no idea where to find their collection point.

Once we reached the correct kiosk, we then had to wait approximately 90 minutes to collect our car, while travelling with our six-month-old baby in temperatures exceeding 25°C. As a result of these delays, we did not arrive at our accommodation until after 1:00 am. Not a great way to start our first family holiday!

The following day, we carried out a thorough inspection of the vehicle, as we had been specifically advised to do because it was dark when we collected it. We were also instructed to take photographs of any existing damage. My husband had questioned signing the collection document confirming there was no damage, as we had not been able to properly inspect the vehicle due to the poor lighting. We photographed all pre-existing damage and retained these images so we could present them when returning the vehicle.

Upon returning the car, we showed the photographs to a member of your staff, who confirmed that everything was in order. We therefore had no reason to believe there would be any further issues.

It was therefore both shocking and unacceptable to receive an email two weeks later demanding €137.97 for damage that we did not cause. Given that the existing damage was documented and accepted by your staff when the vehicle was returned, we categorically dispute this charge.

The lack of communication, excessive waiting time, and now this unjustified damage claim have resulted in an extremely poor customer experience. It is unacceptable that we are now being asked to pay for damage we did not cause, and we will not be accepting responsibility for this charge.

Disappointing experience in Cadiz

Disappointing experience in Cadiz. I was given a car that already had at least four areas of existing damage when I collected it, so I took a timestamped walk-around video before driving away. On returning the vehicle, I was surprised to receive a Statement of Return recording the rear number plate as new damage, despite my video appearing to show it was already damaged at collection. I have now had to raise a formal dispute and spend part of my holiday gathering evidence instead of enjoying my trip. If you hire from this branch, I strongly recommend taking a detailed video and photos of the entire vehicle before leaving, as they may prove essential if any damage is later questioned. I hope Europcar reviews my evidence fairly and resolves the matter promptly

I do not recommend Europcar Mallorca

The car rental went well at first, BUT on return "a defect was found that was not noted". I showed them a photo and the matter should have been clear and they said they would refund the full amount because the fault was not mine. However, that did not happen. I sent a video taken in their parking lot in Mallorca and all the evidence, but they still try to charge and they say they will not continue the investigation. I do not recommend them to anyone.

These crooks should be locked up

These crooks should be locked up. Hidden charges, ridiculous surcharges for "premium locations" i.e. an airport where the desk is closed most of the time?! Additional charges for refuelling the car as it apparently wasn't returned full (refuelled 4km from airport). Awful customer service, have emailed 5 times without a reply. Taking unauthorised payments from the credit card account they make you provide before handing over the keys.

We had an outstanding experience with Marta at Europcar. We accidentally entered the wrong dates when making our booking (entirely our mistake), and turned up with our two kids, so it could easily have been a very stressful situation. Marta couldn't have been more helpful. She went completely out of her way to sort everything out for us, making everything so easy. Her customer service was genuinely exceptional – friendly, professional and willing to go the extra mile. We honestly couldn't have asked for more. A huge thank you to Marta and the whole Europcar team. Highly recommended!

Scammed with bait and switch

We pre-booked a car. At the airport we were told a different model would be cheaper because it was on sale. I didn't need, want or ask for any "upgrade". What they didn't tell me was this "cheaper car" came with an additional fee. This was under the title "Customer Choice". So the "cheaper car" actually cost THREE TIMES what I initially agreed to. This was hidden by the tactic of scrolling down the agreement we signed on the tablet so we never saw the actual costs, the only mention of which was from the representative whom we trusted and assured us would be less.

I consider this practice to be indistinguishable from criminal. I would recommend anyone to avoid Europcar at all costs.

Here is how you should rent any car:

1. Buy the minimal package online in advance and agree no changes whatsoever on collection.
2. Buy independent liability insurance which is around 80% less than that offered by the companies.

Spain, Barcelona Airport, Europcar

Rental location: Spain, Barcelona Airport, Europcar office
Europcar Booking No.: 34911505000
Booking.com Reservation No.: 620099301

Our experience renting a car in Spain, at the Europcar office at Barcelona Airport, was extremely disappointing.

I would like to point out that our experience with Europcar actually began on 29 September 2025. On that day, we attempted to rent a car in the name of Yana Penkova, but encountered serious problems that caused us a great deal of stress and almost ruined the beginning of our holiday. I described that experience in detail in my previous Google review.

To Europcar's credit, after our complaint the company apologized and fully refunded the money. At that point, we believed we were dealing with a company that truly values its customers and is willing to acknowledge and correct its mistakes. That is why we decided to trust Europcar again.

On 30 September 2025, we rented another vehicle, this time in the name of Maksym Penkov.

The rental cost was €250, and a €500 security deposit was blocked on our credit card.

We returned the vehicle on 8 October 2025. A few days later, the security deposit was fully released and returned to our card. We therefore believed that the rental had been completed successfully, that the vehicle had been accepted without any issues, and that there were no claims against us.

However, 43 days later, on 13 November 2025, €475 was unexpectedly charged to our credit card.

We received no prior notification, signed no damage report, and were provided with no inspection report, photographs, or any other documentation explaining the reason for this charge.

We have detailed photographs and continuous video recordings of the vehicle taken both before collection and after return. These original files contain metadata showing the exact date, time, and location, confirming their authenticity. We repeatedly offered to provide these files, but Europcar's customer service did not provide any way to submit the original files and refused to consider them as evidence.

We repeatedly contacted Europcar Customer Service and did everything we could to resolve this matter. We reached out to Europcar representatives in Ukraine, Spain, and France. Since the vehicle had been booked through Booking.com (Reservation No. 620099301), we also contacted Booking.com Customer Service and asked for their assistance in resolving this issue.

We provided all the information we had, explained the situation in detail, and requested an objective review of our case.

Unfortunately, despite contacting all of these parties, the matter remains unresolved. To this day, we have not received a clear explanation for the charge, any supporting documentation, an objective review of the evidence we provided, or a fair resolution.

Before this trip, we had rented cars many times in different countries and from different rental companies without ever experiencing anything like this.

What is most disappointing is that after the first issue, we chose to trust Europcar again because the company acknowledged its mistake, apologized, and corrected the situation. That is exactly why we booked with Europcar a second time. Unfortunately, what happened afterwards seriously damaged our trust.

We are now planning another trip to a different country where Europcar is the only available car rental company. To be honest, after what happened, I am genuinely worried about finding myself in the same situation again and facing the same sense of unfairness.

That is why I decided to write this review once more—not to criticize the company, but because I still hope that our voice will be heard.

I sincerely hope that Europcar will demonstrate honesty, transparency, and professionalism by objectively reviewing our case, helping to finally resolve this dispute, and making the claims process more open, clear, and fair.

This would help restore not only our family's trust, but also the confidence of many other customers who choose Europcar expecting fair, respectful, and professional service.

They charged me a fee after delivery of the car. They were not present at the moment of return, while it was in their office hours. Therefore I didn't have the possibility to check their claim, and neither did it fall under my insurance because there was no inspection at delivery. I debated the claim via my credit card company and now they are threatening with lawyers, while I already paid the amount. No one replies on my emails.

Bad culture here - best avoided.

Malaga Airport - Did the usual upsell on many items, all declined. charged 100 euros anyway after rental, had to demand a refund - they try and con you, hope you won't notice on credit card bill.
Also microscopically inspected car to try to find the tiniest blemish - there were none but they tried to claim something ridiculously small- she looked so disappointed when I wiped it off with my finger!

Incorrect Insurance Charges

I recently rented a car from Europcar and was charged for an insurance I explicitly declined at the counter. Despite explaining the situation and providing context, Europcar refused to review or refund the charge, hiding behind the signed contract even though it doesn’t reflect what was discussed.
Their customer service was polite but completely unhelpful — no accountability, no willingness to investigate.
I rent regularly through my employer’s fleet program, and this experience confirms the poor reputation Europcar has among colleagues.
Disappointing and untrustworthy. I’ll avoid Europcar in the future.

Scammers at Europcar Valencia

Scammers, DO NOT TAKE THEIR INSURANCE. SCAM. The basic car went from 230 to 1100Cad. Totally lied to my face. When you are at the counter tired of your long flight and they start asking tons of questions and throwing you this and that, and insirance and and....you ask questions and nothing in writing only on their screen which you can't see...this is their game, they confuse you make you sign a paper saying they will reimburse you x....and that is all. But they add charges and your deposit is gone. Shady practices at Europcar Valencia...all done with a smile.
