Excellent touring sites. Appreciated the organizational efforts of Sara, our tour manager. The Albula and Julier Hotel in Tiefencastel was our stay for 5 nights. Excellent surroundings and rooms are above average in size. Only suggestion is to improve the lighting in the rooms. The same three wines were served at each dinner. They definitely were sub-par.

This isn’t a holiday to contemplate if you’re unfit, or want relaxation, but it is an adventure. Every day starts with a 500m steep hill to the station, and despite spending a great deal of time on trains, you can expect to walk a lot as well. The hotel is comfortable, not luxurious, and the meals mostly well cooked and tasty. You get to visit places like glamorous St Moritz and stunningly beautiful Arosa, but you can’t spend a great deal of time in any of them. The scenery is magnificent and the engineering magic that created the various lines, tunnels and awesome viaducts is fascinating. For me, the highlight was the Bernina Express to Torino in Italy, though it was a pity we arrived there during siesta and had only a couple of hours to explore. Do be aware that you have to move your own suitcase around too, on the outward and homeward legs of the journey, including getting it on and off trains and in between stations. Our holiday manager, Anne-Marie, deserves a special mention, as she was a last minute substitute dropped in with 24 hours’ notice, and was superb.

The tour was first class but it is very full on. Time available at places visited was very optimistic, after the briefing by the tour manager on arrival and the meet up up time for leaving it was reduced by about 30%. The fact that I went down with a heavy cold did not help with climbs up steep streets. Overall it was very interesting and sights were amazing.

The rail holiday and the scenery was fantastic but the main hotel we had was isolated with a very limited menu and quite long steep hill to the station to catch the trains.

The spectacular Swiss scenery will always sell this tour. But be aware it is a busy and hectic tour, with some long days on trains. If you are mad about trains, it’s for you.You are based at Tiefencastel for 5 days. There is very little to do in the town, it is primarily used for the train station. But there are better and more relaxed ways to see the natural beauty of Switzerland.
