An excellent trip which taught us much about an area about which we knew little. The Hotel des Roches worked very well as a base and the small town of Les Eyzies has much to recommend it. The excursions included provided a series of highlights from Josephine Baker’s chateau to a steam train. That said, we also made full use of the free days. Les Eyzies has a railway station which brings larger towns within reach. We spent a day in Perigueux, mainly in the excellent Roman museum. Be prepared for the travelling, there’s a fair bit of it, and it’s a pity that Brive isn’t on a TGV route. The journey across Paris is, well, a journey across Paris, with the usual up and downs. Finally, kudos to Tony, our ace tour manager, and to Robert our driver. How manages to fit in his driving job with all that cooking is beyond us…. PS there are plenty of options to fill 2 free days with some ease. Also, 36 in the tour group is a little on the large size….
The tour was badly organised which is unusual for great rail journeys. The accommodation was in an area with nothing there and they expected us to have 2 free days there when the holiday was only 6 nights long. This was not what we have been used to from great rail journeys which are normally very well planned and organised.
