Absolutely Appalling Experience – Avoid Green Motion Edinburgh Airport at All Costs

I am beyond frustrated and disappointed with my experience at Green Motion Edinburgh Airport. It has now been over a month since I returned the vehicle, and I am still waiting for the return of my £1,505 deposit. This is not a minor delay—this is outright theft.

After numerous attempts to contact the branch, I was shockingly told by a representative named Pedro to “not bother them.” This level of unprofessionalism is staggering. I escalated the issue to their customer service team, and while I briefly saw a pending refund, it was reverted before it ever reached my account.

I have now been forced to initiate legal action through my credit card provider to recover my funds. This company is not just disorganized—they are operating in a way that feels deliberately deceptive. Their low prices are a trap: they lure you in and then steal your money through withheld deposits and evasive customer service.

DO NOT USE GREEN MOTION. They are not just a scam—they are thieves. I wouldn’t wish this experience on anyone.

Terrible Experience at Manchester Airport

I booked my rental through Zest because the rate was slightly lower, and the supplier's rating on Zest was good.
At the Green Motion desk, there was annoying insistence on selling additional insurance. Then, I was only handed the car keys without any contract or documents, with them stating I would receive them by email – I never did.
Upon returning the car, I was disputed for a small damage. Subsequently, I received multiple charges on my credit card without any communication, some of which were not due, such as charges for an additional driver already included with Zest. It was only after multiple written complaints that we received the invoices and justification for the charges. We disputed these, and recovered part of the undue charges, which they justified as errors. Ultimately, the rental cost quadrupled.
Stay far away from this company!

Total scam

Total scam: when I went to collect the car, they told me that since I have 3 points on my driving license, I couldn't hire the car unless I paid an extra £125. 3 points is what you get for driving 30mph in a 20 zone! Most people have 3 points on their license, and no other car hire company would take this approach. To justify it they pointed to some highly ambiguous language in the size 6 font T&Cs. It's just a scam. Avoid at all costs

Green motion Manchester airport.

Green motion Manchester airport.

Firstly expect to wait 30-40 mins to be picked up by an old banger of a van who drives you to their office about 10 mins away and back again upon returning the car.
SECOND - the company operates outside the law which I have now forwarded to the ombudsman. I rented a car through carjet and purchase their insurrance - I even went with what jetcar call their exellent and fully covered insurrance . Upon arrival to Green Motion in Manchester airport I was told that this insurrance that I had purchased was not valid - only if I had a credit card with me to pay out a deposit however I only had a debit visa card which I used booking the car with through carjet. This meant I was forced to purchase another expensive insurrance from GREEN MOTION company using my visa debit card. In the offfice Green Motion express themselves as a honest and reliable company - this isn't the case and why would you operate with jetcar if its not within the law. When experiencing issues like this - this time using GRREN MOTION and JETCAR write to the ombudsman as this is NOT within the law and should be stopped.

poor customer service, especially at the weekends

Mixed performance of this company. Monday to Friday, they can be good. But on a weekend or out of hours don't count on them. Recent experiences include being told that they need a manager to approve a non uk driving licence but that the manager doesnt work the weekends so they cant give me a car. Also a slight delay on a flight meant that when I arrived just before 10PM, the site was in darkness and they had all gone home leaving me to pay for a taxi. They then refused to refund me because the 15 minute flight delay was not their fault. This is not how I expect airport hire companies to operate. Pay the extra £2 per day and stick with the main rental companies

AVOID AT ALL COSTS

AVOID AT ALL COSTS
All the reviews are correct, Green Motion do not make their money from Car Rental, but from Charging Customers Exuberant Repair fees for Pre-Existing Damage.

On pick up the staff are very relaxed about any pre-existing damage to the vehicle - but on return they will hold you liable for every slight blemish, regardless of if it happened before your rental. If you HAVE to use them make sure you have very good Excess Cover - it saved me the cost of the Excess - £1,700! This was for a small scratch which they claimed would cost £4,000 to fix, which is completely absurd. Also document EVERY SQUARE INCH of the Vehicle. Inside and out. It still probably won't stop them trying it on, but it gives you more evidence.

YES they are the cheapest but honestly it's not worth the saving.

AVOID AVOID AVOID.

What renters should know in advance

I was unable to take my rental car as my credit card for the security hold did not work. I offered various alternatives: the same credit card but in Google Wallet, credit card of a family member, debit card, cash(!), but none of these was acceptable. Green Motion may have whatever policies it chooses - I don't object to that per se - but renters should know that you must have a physical credit card in your name (which is also that of the renter, i.e. you are also the one renting the car according to the voucher) with the sufficient amount of credit available, and must enter the PIN into the machine (which is often not required outside of the UK where I live).
The only alternative was to buy their enhanced insurance plan which would have cost an additional GBP150 for 6 days even though I had already paid for enhanced insurance with Autoeurope through whom I booked the care. This would have allowed me to use a debit card for the security. But the full rental itself was only GBP88, so I declined.
Again, Green Motion may have whatever policies it wishes - though I think it could have been more flexible to a just-arrived-in-the-UK tourist given the alternatives I offered - but anyway, BE AWARE!

Avoid under all circumstances

Green Motion scams customers into buying premium insurance. It is unbelievably simple. When you come to the rental counter and if you haven't purchased a premium insurance pack thru their company then they ask you the proof that you don't more than 6 points which can be proven only if you have paper license which most people dont carry. Their policy says they cant give a car on basic insurance unless you prove you have less than 6 points. The only alternative is to buy their top insurance package by paying £75 per day extra for insurance. Suppose you did have the paper license and able to prove you dont have 6 points then they ask you a credit card (it has to be visa or master card) to block the excess amount. The card cant be an amex and has to be in the name of the person who booked the car rental. They cannot block the excess amount on your debit card. Well they have a solution - buy their premium insurance package and there's no need to have a credit card. In short they want you to buy their extra insurance in some way or another. When you ask them more questions, their standard reply, you should read our terms and conditions.

Avoid. Make money from non-existent damage charges.

Avoid. Will charge for non-existent damage with no opportunity to challenge "evidence".

Upon returning my rental car to Green Motion's Edinburgh Airport branch, they notified me of an apparent 75mm+ dent on the bodywork of the car and immediately pulled money from account, leaving no time to challenge. A dent of such size would be clearly visible in photographs of the vehicle yet no dent can be seen on any of the photographs they sent, nor on the return photographs I made when returning the car. The only images that Green Motion provided as "evidence" show a slight zig-zag line on a reflection board which in no way is evidence of a dent 75mm+ in size.

They also pulled additional money from my account despite already having a pre-authorisation blocked, leaving me double-charged and in a financially difficult position for the next month, given that they have informed me the deposit may take up to 30 days to return!

Clearly this is how Green Motion make their money - offer discount rates then try squeeze as much money as possible out of their customers for false damages. I wish I had read reviews before booking with Green Motion (my mistake) but hope this at least stops someone else from falling into the same trap.

They are charging me £1000 to replace a windscreen I did not scratch
When I returned to inspect the car again it was hired out for over a fortnight to someone else - so the windscreen was safe to rent it again
There was two chips on windscreen when I received it - so it was compromised already
I didn’t take out their proffered insurance which I suspect is why I’m being targeted
I rented through the Ryanair app as an add on to my flight purchase- another reason why I’m targeted
Beware of this company

**Warning to Tourists – Unethical Practices at Green Motion**

I want to warn fellow travelers about a highly unethical practice my family experienced with Green Motion. My father, who speaks very little English, recently visited England as a tourist and rented a car from this company. Unfortunately, due to his limited understanding of the language, he was manipulated into purchasing an extremely overpriced insurance policy.

Instead of being provided with clear, honest information about his options, the representative at the rental office took advantage of the language barrier and pressured him into an insurance plan that cost **£780 versus the original rental price of £95**. This is not just an upsell; it is outright **exploitation** of non-English-speaking customers. No reasonable person would willingly agree to such an outrageous charge if they were properly informed.

This kind of **predatory behavior** is unacceptable and should be exposed so that other travelers do not fall victim to the same tactics. Companies like Green Motion should be held accountable for these dishonest practices, and I strongly urge tourists to **avoid renting from them** if they value transparency and fair treatment.

If you’ve had a similar experience, I encourage you to speak out and report these unfair practices to consumer protection agencies. Travelers deserve better!

Green Motion - complete shysters

Never, ever under any circumstances deal with this bunch of cowboys and total scam merchants.

Here's the deal......book cheap car hire, in my case through jet 2 add ons. Be lured in by the “cheap deal”- take the bait and they’ve got you hooked....( ours was £21 for 3 days 16th Jan to 19th Jan from Faro, Portugal). Get collected from the airport and on arrival at the car pick up point (approx. 3 miles away) you get the usual spiel from the charming rep ,which of course includes an offer of their usual damage excess insurance for a couple of hundred euros which coincidentally won't ever be needed as long as you buy it, if you don't buy it BEWARE. However, being “smart” we had already taken out the excess waiver accidental damage insurance in the UK prior to travel with AXA and as recommended on the Jet 2 link for car hire (additional £27.00).

We were asked if we wanted to take out their additional “accidental damage insurance” (€150) which would cover us for any such damage but as we had already done this declined the offer. Looking back they stressed a couple of times that any accidental damage on return of the vehicle would therefore be “chargeable” and we would be left to take up any reclaim through our individual policy.

The car we picked up was almost new and as usual we were asked to inspect the vehicle noting any marks / dents etc > 5 cms. The lady pointed out the things “already there” and noticeable but we are convinced the "mark" on the front bumper which was miraculously found on our return was already there but as we had not taken any pictures or a video of around the car we could not prove we hadn't done it. I have used hire companies on many occasions in the past in various countries and thought I knew the ropes. However, I am convinced any such video may still not have shown up or deemed the offending mark to be noteworthy (> 5 cms remember!!!). There get out was that we may not have done it but somebody else could have hit us .......but just how that could happen without more damage being done is beyond me. (see attached pictures – spot the €315 euro’s damage)

We returned the car Sunday morning 19th Jan 2025, unloaded the car and then had the usual return inspection by a different, but similarly charming guy. He did the obligatory fuel check – returned with full tank - tick, and then started his inspection of the vehicle, starting at the driver’s side and finishing at the conveniently placed subtle mark on the front passenger bumper. The car was a gun metal grey with black trim, so the black eye line pencil line on the bumper was hardly noticeable but as it wasn't picked up, or more importantly pointed out with other marks on pick up, must have been done whilst the car had been in our possession and as it was > 5cms (conveniently 8-10 cms) would be subject to a sliding scale damage charge once entered into their computer and which of course would have been covered IF we had taken out their additional insurance. In my opinion had we done so no such additional damage would have been conveniently found. So either way they were going to make sure they got a few hundred more euros out of the hire fee, it's a guaranteed win for them.

Whilst we kicked off as much as we could about their sharp practice we knew, and so did they, that they had us and the only option was to cough up and to see if we could then claim the 315 Euros back from our insurance (with AXA), although I'm guessing they may also have some small print to quote to us so not holding my breath on this one either ?

Another point is that you also have your flight to catch so the more you argue the more chance you have of not making your flight.......it is the perfect scenario for them. Refuse to pay and risk losing the 3 mile return trip back to the airport in which case the 5 x new flights = > €315.00 and don’t forget they still have the €1,500 euro security deposit on your credit card (forgot to mention that !) which I guess they would use to offset any damage charges.

Note to self and Others:

1. Never ever use Green Motion to hire a vehicle, maybe should have read trip advisor / trust pilot first......there's loads more where I come from!!!

2. If something seems too good to be true it probably is......maybe I should have smelt a rat at £21 for 3 days......but that's their plan catch their fish and make a killing......it all makes perfect sense now.

3. When hiring any car in future take pictures and videos of the whole vehicle, as long as it may take it could be worth it in the long run, although you should hope that other hire companies have a different and more ethical moral compass than the shysters called GREEN MOTION.

This company is a scam.

This company is a scam.
Paid for car hire...and they left me stranded at Liverpool airport.
All contact with them..resulted in it being someone else's fault..scam company.
I have ticked the box with trustpilot to contact them..but this will be fruitless..total scam...as indicated by so many other people.
I expect this company to be trading shortly under a new name..that is usually how scam companies work.

Non existent customer seervice

I posted a 1* review about my car hire with Green Motion Latvia here on 2nd February. Green Motion International replied a day later asking me to contact them. Now, more than 10 days later, I still have not received any acknowledgement or reply from Green Motion International, hence you give me no other option than leave you another 1* review.

In addition, I have just completed another car hire in Latvia - this time with Hertz who were just marginal £15 more expensive for a 5 day period, but do not apply questionable / unfair business practices as Green Motion Latvia does with unjustified Eur 40 cleaning charges afterwards.

Beware of Bandits

Beware of Bandits.

Arrived at the airport after a severely delayed flight with small child ready to receive hire car only to find they were closed. After several attempts to contact the main office, ringing the bell etc. we opted for the reliable taxi to get us to our destination... Following day I rang up only to find out they had already cancelled our booking and would not be refunding us. Based on other similar reviews it would seem they are hiring and cancelling cars at every opportunity so they can then hire the same car out and the cycle continues. Wonder how many vehicles they actually have?

Awful awful company would not recommend to anyone.

I want to warn everybody about this…

I want to warn everybody about this company in as many places as I can. I don't know how the service is in this office, but I want to warn as many people as possible before this happens to another person.

After having asked for several times for a reimbursement for a replacement bulb we paid (the car came with no front light, a very serious safety issue), they offered to pay the 10 euros back if we removed the review from another website. Of course, I have to say that not everything is their fault. I could not give a receipt because the place where I bought the bulb refused to give us a receipt. Instead of receiving the reimbursement, I asked to get my bulb back given that they will not entitled to give a reimbursement. I was denied to get my bulb too, given that supposedly I could not touch the car, something I did in first place when they asked us to replace it ourselves.

I have emails to prove this in case anyone wants to see it. I am not uploading them just in case.

You may think this is insignificant, but the problem is how customer service has dealt with the issue. They blackmailed us to remove a review in which I stated the bad service Green Motion Greece has offered and finally, they had not reimbursed us nor had they given us the bulb.

Be wary of this company, at least in Greece. You may have problems.

Premium hire car company.

They say every cloud has a silver lining, my holiday return flight has just been cancelled, so I tried to amend my hire car which was with a different company but couldn't. So I cancelled it and my carhire is now with Greenmotion in Kaunas 😁 I'm so happy as this is my go to carhire company, always great spec vehicles in new condition and I've had a few upgrade surprises too, the staff are super nice and always helpful. I highly recommend Greenmotion anywhere I go.
