There aren't a lot of options for non-residents to have a proper mobile phone number in Japan, but Hanacell is the one that makes the most sense for me. Low maintenance fees when not in active use and the online portals are easy to use. I've had mine for 3 years and have no complaints.

Just get a secondary SIM when you are in country to cover mobile data.

The eSIM was properly installed and got bars but did not get any internet connection whatsoever. I left a google review which they responded (they somehow managed to delete it... can't find my review anywhere!) and said their service is difficult to use for non-Japanese speakers... uhm.. I am Japanese and am fluent with my language!? I cancelled the SIM and switched to Holiday.com, then Mobal. They worked immediately and just fine.

Hanacell.com caused so much stress and chaos during our honeymoon and almost ruined the trip. What I can't stand is them blaming the customers by essentially questioning their intellect, and the fact that they tried to hide the incident by deleting the review.

This is a scam company, their commercial says:
使わない月は料金ゼロ維持費は年間12米ドルだけ【初年度無料. for sim temporarily using in Japan.
If not using the phone call during the month,the charge is zero, maintance fee is only USD12 yearly.

I bought the SIM card for USD70 on September 15, and I made a call only once in September, then they charged me USD 29 in October 20, I cancelled the contract October 18, and they charged me USD 29 in November 20, which means I made only one call in Japan, and I have to pay USD 130 for this call.
I cancelled the contract already, but they still charge me the month I had not use the phone?Avoid using the sim from the company, just use hotel telephone will save you a lot of money.

The sim card is very useful, pick up was very smooth too, after one month use, I receive the bill, everything is very clear. Hope they can give customers better price in the future.

Hanacell is one of the few and most affordable options to get a real local phone number. Essentially, you get as fully fledged Softbank SIM-card without having a residency permit which is hard to obtain otherwise.
The service works and billing is straightforward - have already recommended the service to many people and I really like it.

Last year, my phone with their SIM in Japan didn't work at all.
I tried so many things according to that help desk. At last they suggested me to buy a new mobile. I did. They charged me in full amount with no consideration while my mobile didn't work.

This year, the same thing was happened. I did contact help desk, but they asked me too much as amateurs without technical knowledge. I asked them to cancel the line.

Next month, they charged me even I did cancelled the contract, without no connection, for just use of one day of 29 dollars!!

I never ever recommend this company at all.

Very good value for those who want a stable phone number if you can't stay in Japan too often. Used it for event tickets, making bookings, LINE, etc. Compared to other services for those without residency (8000JPY for a month, and requires you to pay as long as you want to keep the number), the value is too good.

The customer service of Hanacell has been very responsive and patient with all my requests. While I initially got my SIM card in USA, I had lost my SIM card twice unfortunately but Hanacell helped me issue a new SIM card delivered to my accommodation in Japan. I lost my phone, then contacted to HanaCell. I wanted to connect my previous cell phone as soon as possible, but I waited for a week to get a SIM card. I couldn’t get in touch with anybody for 6 days. So frustrated.
I didn’t know the company started to use e-sim. Should have been able to connect to my previous iPhone13(Bought it in the states) the day after I lost it. Why should I wait for a week to get a SIM card?

I always use Hanacell when I go back to Japan and need a cellphone number whenever booking a restaurant or a taxi. Sometimes I meet some trouble in Japan and I can only use a phone call for trouble shooting. I appreciate this service. It cost only 8USD/year to keep my number.
