Do not buy a Haws Watering Can!

Apparently, according to Haws who will refer you to the small print in the terms and conditions should you have the gall to complain, you shouldn’t leave your OUTDOOR watering can OUTDOORS! Our very expensive one split when water froze in the base. Strangely our £10.99 one from Screwfix survived.

Hi James, firstly apologies for the delay in responding. We had no idea that Trust Pilot had set up an account for our company as we have our own review system, so I joined up this morning! Firstly in regard to leaving your outdoor watering can outside, assuming you have bought a metal can, you are correct we don't recommend leaving it outside during the winter. However due to the use of the word "gall" I'd guess we did not handle your call or email sympathetically for which I apologise. You should never have felt that your email or call was a waste of our time, we appreciate that you chose a Haws can and I will pick up on this when you contact me directly. By the way my Haws plastic can does tend to live outside all year round. All metal cans, will during a freeze stand a proportional chance of splitting as the ice is pushed down by gravity rather than up, our cans are affected in the same way that leaving a bottle of wine in the freezer is unfortunately. If you get the chance, please could you email me and I will see what I can do to get things sorted for you. Speak soon, Mark.

Poorly made product

*** See update at the end of this original review ***

I ordered and received a Warley Fall Green - Two Gallon watering can last summer. Less than 2 months after buying it, the side of the spout came into contact with a garden cane while being used, a fairly gentle knock, but enough to make a small dent in the spout. Unfortunately this dent caused the seam along the spout to split for a length of about 3 cms, allowing the water to leak out. This was not careless use, just the type of small knock that a watering can should be expected to receive in normal use. Very disappointing!

Haws refused to do anything about it, claiming it was our fault, and the follow-up recorded delivery letter of complaint to the MD, asking for a refund, went unanswered.

The can is a good design, but is of too light and weak a construction for normal garden use - suitable only for an ornament. And I am very disappointed in the 'customer service' of this company, particularly when I paid so much for a watering can that I thought would last me my life-time (I'm getting on a bit).

*** UPDATE *** 25 April 2023
I was recently contacted by a new member of Haws management (Mark, see his comment below), and I am very pleased to say that, after almost a year on from originally posting this review, I have received a new replacement can!

After speaking to Mark, and hearing his explanations of the changes in the company, and the identification of any weak points in their products, I believe that the company will have a different, and better, attitude to its customers, and genuine complaints will be dealt with with more consideration.

Hi Les, firstly apologies for the delay in responding. Can you contact me at mark@hwas.co.uk so I can help you directly please? We had no idea that Trustpilot had set up an account for our company as we have our own review system, so I joined up this morning! So a few issues to respond to here and it will be best if we do it over the phone. However here's my thoughts for the moment. I'll check with the team on your letter, but I have not seen it personally. We do respond to correspondence, as the ethos is if you have taken the time to write the least we can do is write back. As to the cane hitting the spout, I'll will check with the team next week but if it was a wooden cane hitting a rolled steel spout a gentle knock should have no effect whatsoever, to be honest neither would a firm whack; so I'd like to chat with you about that to better understand what happened. You are correct our cans are designed to take some knocks and they are certainly not light and weak. The guys on the factory floor are pretty strong because of the tensile strength of the metal they work by hand day in and day out. Our cans are very much designed for life but no different to any other piece of kit we do hope that some care will be taken with them, especially not leaving them with water in on a night when the temperature will go below zero. Speak soon, Mark.

Great company

Great company. I made an online enquiry to find a Haws rose to fit a 70 year old Haws watering can. The response was very helpful. Ordered the rose which arrived very quickly and fits my can perfectly!

Great Mini-Watering Can & Customer Services

I ordered two Bartley Burblers (mini-watering cans), in Sage and Duck Egg Blue. They are a very attractive design and the pastel colours make a nice change from the standard bright/dark green ones. These cans are great for watering seedlings as they have a very fine rose so even the smallest, most delicate seedlings won’t be damaged, (I often ended up damaging seedlings when I watered with a large can).

I was very pleased with Haws’ customer care services - they’d accidentally sent the wrong colour so they replaced it with the right colour straight away.

In terms of quality, I know they are well made and built to last because my co-worker on our allotment has been using hers for years and it’s been left outside in all weathers!

Watering Cand

We have two very old style watering cans that are about 25 years old and we enquired about some new wooden handles, which we were happy to pay for. Not only did they not charge us they sent them out that day and we received them in the post the next day. Amazing service and such a fantastic quality product. We will definitely be purchasing more products - already earmarked a copper coloured jug!

The iconic watering can

I have tried to get a vintage copper/brass can on Ebay but they hardly sell below 40£. It is the iconic English watering can. Perfect design and much copied.
So I bought a plastic model and it looks fabulous and it is so comfortably light. Good quality. Stylish.

Don't deliver to Scotland

I live just outside Aberdeen, 3 miles from the city boundary. I used Haws website to buy some replacement watering roses. Got to the end only to find out they do not deliver to Scotland. Really?! Simply not good enough ... insulting even. Must do better.

Fab watering can, well made & great quality

I have just purchased a 1 litre metal Rowley Ripple watering can in cream colour, with a rose, from Haws. I am delighted with my purchase, as the can is very sturdy, extremely well constructed, the rose fits well on the spout, and it works a treat. It’s not a cheap product, but I know that this item will last me for some considerable time, so am very happy to have bought it instead of a plastic one.

Great service from a proud family company

My Haws galvanised can is at least 20 years old (I was given it second hand). It started to leak from the spout but was otherwise in good condition, so I didn't want to throw it out. I contacted Haws and Josh arranged for it to be repaired for under £20. It is now working perfectly.
Josh tells me that Haws make nothing on these repairs, but they are proud of their cans and don't like to see them going for scrap. I think that my can will see me out, but if I were buying a new one it would definitely be a Haws. They are expensive, but based on this experience they should last a lifetime.

Thanks for the lovely message. Josh is smashing and he's correct our craftswomen & craftsmen will divert once a fortnight to our mending project, which is a real labour of love for the team. Glad you were happy. Best wishes, Mark.
