Icerental 4x4 is an innovative car rental company specializing in 4x4 vehicles in Iceland. Founded in 2013, our family-owned business began with only 10 cars. Since then, Icerental 4x4 has grown a lot, with a big rental office near the Keflavik International Airport, where we offer a wide range of vehicles in all sizes and model years. Our passion is 4x4, and our fleet is based on quality 4x4 cars. However, we also provide vans and smaller vehicles to fulfill all your transportation needs while visiting Iceland. In 2014 we started with our Camper Jeep, offering Jeeps to camp in while exploring the highlands. This idea evolved into Roof Tent campers, and in 2017, we introduced our Roof Tent vehicles in various sizes. These are the perfect way to explore Iceland during the summertime—our 4x4 Roof Tent vehicles allow you to see the highlands and Iceland’s untouched nature. We at Icerental 4x4 are committed to offering the best quality 4x4 vehicles at reasonable rates. We believe in personal service based on building relationships with our customers.

The staff were great, the price reasonable and the car was safe for driving on snowy roads. It would be helpful, and reduce stress, if the airport pickup was explained further in the email - e.g. that the pick up might take up to 30 (not 10-15) minutes and to wait at the ATM.

Gangsters to lie and overcharge. The most awful experience. They rent out old cars with issues, high mileage, and ours even had a hole in the tear-which is very dangerous in Iceland. They tried charging us an OUTRAGEOUS amount (5 thousand) for the tiniest dent that was already there before they rented it. They said "the wind did it", but we only had the car for 1 day safely parked in Reykjavik and it isn't true. They also tried charging us 10k, and most of the guys are assholes with arrogant ego problems.
They do not respect their customers and we will NEVER go back again. I personally believe they should be shut down, because two other people who came in AFTER US, were complaining about the SAME THING! That they were attempting to charge them for things they did not even do/were not the customers fault! Those customers had to prove it by telling them they documented it and had photos.
This is just what they do... and we wonder where all the money is going for overcharging their clients?!
Also, their service, in case of emergency is AWFUL. One car problem and they barely answer the phone then tell us we are shit out of luck. They wear manipulative masks and are just trying to get everything they can from you.

Great deal and responsive representatives
A bit of a long wait before being picked up from the airport

This is the second time with Icerental 4x4 and again I had a really good rental experience. All went well with no issues. Good customer service, car ok, no insistance on adding insurance, no surprises, quick deposit release. This is a trustworthy rental company :)

Easy pickup at the airport, even if only the drivers were pickuped. This makes it faster, when there are more families arriving the same time. You can return by car to the airport and pickup the rest of your family for free 5min parking.
Rented car was as expected with a lot of KM and some marked scratches, but this is what you get for the renting price. If you expect a new fresh car, you may need to pay a higher price somewhere else.
The returning takes some time at the morning, because of a longer queue but all in all it was quite fast and the shuttle bus waiting for for us.
I truly recommend them.

Everything went smoothly; the car was perfect for our 2500km tour through Iceland, and there were no incidents . picking it up was a bit complicated, but returning it was quick an problem-free.

The people there are all very friendly, i didnt have to wait after they picked me up from the airport. It Was a litten bit sad, that i have to go alone from the airport to the car rental. They had a lot of peolpe to Pick up and just one from every group where able to come. So i had to Pick up the car and go back to the airport to the rest of my group. The car we got was super clean and worked perfect.

The car was in good condition but a lot of mileage. We made 5000 km, everything was great.

TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE
We were at Volcano Skali Parking P2 around 2 p.m. when, after finishing the 2-hour hike we had done, we wanted to leave and head towards Raufarholshellir (we had already purchased 2 entrance tickets).
However, the car would not start due to a dead battery.
From the very first day we rented the car, the battery had shown signs of weakness, so we always took the usual precautions to save it (lights off when starting, radio off, etc.).
In short, the agency “suggested” that we call a taxi and have one of them recharge the car for us, saying this would save us money, since if the battery issue had been due to our mistake or negligence, their intervention would have cost us much more.
We tried calling several taxis, but absolutely none were available.
So, after calling the Ice Rental 4x4 agency for the fourth time, they finally agreed to come to our aid.
Final result: 3 and a half hours waiting for someone to help us, with an outside temperature of 4°C and continuous rain, and with a pregnant woman on board; €120 worth of lava tour tickets wasted.
The mechanic who came to replace the battery stated very clearly that it was absolutely not our fault, but that the battery itself had issues (so, RIGHTLY, we were not charged any additional costs).

Friendly and helpful staff, efficient check in and out process. New cars in good repair.
We drove the ring 1 route for 9 days and the car performed optimally. We got the car with all terrain tires which is good for some unpaved roads. The car was also equipped with CarPlay, perfect for navigation. Only thing I would ask to improve is the staff customer service, they kept us waiting for about 25 min to return the car when there were 4 employees without customers.
Amazing and smooth car renting experience
Stay away from this company at all costs. As a business Traveller in the tourism industry, this is the worst and most unscrupulous car rental company I’ve ever dealt with. They are dishonest about their insurance policy and will find a way to add outrageous charges to your card once you return the car. In my case, they actually forced me to sign documents against my will and give them another 1500 dollars or they would not let me on the shuttle back to the airport. Their office is located far from the airport with no taxis nearby. I was forced to pay this “ransom” in order to get to the airport and catch my flight. Mind you I had paid for full insurance coverage when I picked up the car. The incredibly rude and hostile clerk said the door doesn’t close properly because I didn’t hold it correctly in the wind!!! It’s funny how the when they so keenly sold me the insurance, they never mentioned anything about the “proper” way of closing their doors. Please take my advice and go with a big name company like Hertz or Avis . Pay a bit more and have peace of mind that you’re not going to get swindled and threatened at the end of your trip.

Everything was fine. Car was in good condition, easy pick-up at the airport. I would recommend them
Since it was the end of the season we got an upgrade when we arrived, passing from a Jimny to a Duster. Car was in really good conditions, almost new, tyres as well. The cooking kit was good as well, with everything needed. We didn't use the table and the chairs provided since every camping in Iceland has fixed or indoor ones.
We rented a Suzuki Jimny 4x4 with a Rooftop Tent, and the car was very old with a very hard suspension so driving the gravel roads was extra bumpy. And during the first days it was raining non-stop and our tent was leaking water, so our mattress was soaked and it was extremely uncomfortable for a few nights.
After some complaints and picture proof, they took the effort to drive a Dacia Duster to our location, almost 6h away, to replace the Jimny, which was very nice. This car had much better suspension and was much more comfortable so I recommend this one. The tent was also better, but I will still highlight that it is definitely a problem in the rain and in the cold, which was the weather we found in September.
One extra thing I think it is awkward that they rent 4x4 vehicles so you feel like you can drive on the F roads, but then some (the most famous ones) are prohibited by them or include river crossings which these cars cannot cross and are not covered by insurance. It is limiting, and we felt a bit cheated out but maybe it was our lack of knowledge and wrong expectations. Be very careful because in our trip we saw two other Dacia Dusters ruined in the river crossing right before Landmannalaugar camping. We parked before the river crossing and camped in the parking lot to avoid it, so we strongly recommend you do the same and don't risk ruining your wallet, you will pay the entire new car.
We also felt like the people in the reception were not that nice. This was our first time with a 4x4 and a rooftop tent, and when we asked a question regarding F roads the person was very rude to the point that we didn't feel comfortable asking the remaining questions and had to figure everything out ourselves.
In the end everything worked out and the check-out was very smooth, so the price-quality makes sense and we still would pick them, but now aware of how it works.
We loved our trip to Iceland and would recommend using Icerental4x4, the car was good and it was worth having a 4WD on the roads. We had no major issues.
However, it's worth noting that Icerental4x4 is not located at the airport, you have to wait for the shuttle bus and then it's a 10-15 min ride to the office to pick up your car.
Also, we hired a hybrid and didn't realise it was a plug in hybrid. However, Icerental4x4 didn't even offer to upsell us with a charging cable, so we weren't able to charge at any of the (many) charging stations around Iceland (the standard power cord doesn't work in the public stations and isn't particularly useful when staying in hotels...)
Costs, Conditions and the car were really good.
We were not informed that we had to look for someone holding a sign in the airport so we were looking for a bus at the bus station. Finally we asked someone at the airport. The shuttle only picked up the driver of each car and let the rest wait at the airport to be picked up later by the driver.
Although we had reserved a little car they gave us one with 7 seats. We didn't know before that we would have to pay higher Parking fees for this car. If we had we would have rejected the car.
We had a bad experience with this company when we rented a motorhome for our trip in Iceland last august. We did not directly choose Icerental 4x4 as a company, but we passed through an intermediary, named Motorhome Iceland.
As I could expect even before the check-in, the model that we selected during the booking was no longer available. Arrived at the desk in Keflavik, after more than an hour spent at the airport waiting for the agent to be picked up, the guy behind the desk told us the model assigned to us would have been another one. The motorhome delivered was an old model, with more than 130.000 km, and with several associated problems: the external plug of the electricity did not work, making impossible to properly charge it at the campsites; the fridge did not work, making impossible to refrigerate foods and beverages; the interiors of the motorhome were not well clean, with some elements which were dirty, such as the brown-coloured mattress. We paid for a 4000€ motorhome, but the experience with the model assigned was not worthy. Moreover, the overall interaction with the staff of the company was terrible. During the check-in they offered very hasty and inadequate explanations about motorhome functionalities, hurrying all the time and without spending the needed time. During the trip we tried to call the assistance to discuss about our problems, but we discovered that it is active just during 8-20 time slot (if someone need urgent assistance during the night, well, good luck to you!). However, the “funniest” part occurred during the check-out, when the guy behind the desk did not say anything about the motorhome conditions after the drop-off, neither about potential discounts applicable to us for the drawbacks occurred during the trip, neither it wanted me or my girlfriend to follow him to check motorhome conditions (this it’s simply not acceptable). Moreover, he was very rude with us and did not offer any kind of comments. For sake of clarity, we cleaned the overall internals of the motorhome, we filled up the gas, but the only feedback we had was “the motorhome is ok”. Terrible experience.
The only positive thing is that, after the travel and after the bad reviews about their behaviour, they refunded me with a reasonable amount, as a compensation for the issues you've encountered during your trip. However, I'm pretty sure they did not voluntarily, but just because the bad reviews on their profile.
My advice is clear. DO NOT RENT WITH THIS COMPANY TO AVOID UNPLEASEANT SURPRISES, untile they won't act seriously and won't provide an adequate service to customers.
