Firstly, I really like Inov8’s direction with the same model having standard and wide-fit options. I have a low volume foot and wore the Trailroc for years before switching to the Trailtalon (and having a pair of Parkclaws). The Trailfly, with a performance fit option, plus added cushion and a rock plate had huge appeal as I’m running in more technical terrain. I tried both 10.5 and 11 (I'm usually an 11 in Inov8s). 10.5 was the better length. The cushion was nice - not bouncy or squishy - and felt more protective (in the house anyway). Two issues led me to return them though: toe box volume and heel/rearfoot height. The performance fit toe box is incredibly roomy! Side-to-side space and height, with no ability to cinch this area down. I would definitely not call this a performance fit; it’s much more like an Altra vs any of the Inov8 models mentioned above. Second, while I liked the trim fit around my heel (no excessive padding), it fit a little low and felt as if my foot could pop out. I tried some non-boomerang footbeds since they’re thinner, but those resulted in WAY too much forefoot space. I’d really love for the Trailfly to have a true optional performance (slim) forefoot fit, and retain the snug arch and heel, much like the Trailtalon design but more suited to very rugged terrain. As designed, I feel like these are best suited to very high volume feet or use on non-technical terrain.

Inov-8 have blown it out of the park with this one!! An incredible shoe to run in, comfortable and stable and a great fit! Looking forward to testing them out properly on my next ultra!

I got these specifically for Chester 50 mile ultra after trying them on at the running show. They arrived just in time to have a few training runs before the event. They were absolutely outstanding, the terrain was horrific, knee deep mud in paces, trails and very wet road with lots of surface water and a bit of snow!! They offered amazing grip, comfort and were just amazing!

Wasn't completely sure about the price as I was thinking "it's only a running top". But really pleased with it. Ran 26 miles in -4c and it was more than adequate. Generally very comfortable. I would like the kneck marginally shorter and a watch slot would be great. But definitely my go to cold weather top now.
