I am a regular member at this gym anf new local management is awful and rude.
severe unprofessionalism, targeted harassment, and safety violations by one of the managers at Kirkstall JD. I have been a loyal member for 15 months, and the conduct I experienced today was entirely unacceptable.
The manager approached me on the gym floor to enforce a bag policy. While I have no issue following gym policy (which was disrupted due to the recent long changing room closures), the manager's execution was discriminatory and hostile. And this is not the first time I face hostility from this person.
Unprofessional Appearance: He was not wearing a staff uniform and had his hood up, making him unidentifiable as an employee. He later approached me again now wearing the uniform but this doesn't excuse the initial approach.
Blatant Discrimination: After aggressively demanding I move my bag, he approached a female member immediately next to me regarding her bag. When she refused, he simply walked away and allowed her to keep it. Furthermore, there were a lot of other male members on the floor with bags who were completely ignored.
When he returned to escalate the situation, he threatened me with suspension and claimed he had "told me off yesterday." When I informed him I was not even in the building yesterday, he immediately backpedaled and claimed it was "the day before." Yes, he did tell me about it a day before at the same time as asking me to fill in injury form mid session...
I have a witness to this altercation too.
i fully acknowledge that having my gym bag on the floor is against standard policy. Like many members, I adopted this habit during the recent long period when the changing rooms were closed for renovations, and the rule has remained entirely unenforced since. I am more than happy to use the lockers moving forward. However, my grievance is not about the existence of the rule but it is about the aggressive and discriminatory manner in which this new manager chose to enforce it today
This gym completely lacks basic customer care and hygiene standards. I joined recently as a new member, and my experience from day one was terrible. Not only did staff show zero interest in giving me a proper tour or helping me settle in, but when i raised a formal complaint about it, management simply brushed it off. Two months later, I have heard nothing back—proving that customer service here is entirely non-existent.
My own experiences have been just as frustrating. When I recently had an issue and needed to buzz for assistance, a staff member came out acting as though I was personally disturbing her peace. As a paying customer, asking a simple question shouldn’t feel like you are begging for help or an inconvenience to the staff.
To top it all off, the facility hygiene is shocking. The toilets are constantly dirty and have a terrible odor. It is genuinely baffling and concerning that management allows conditions to get this bad, and it’s a wonder no members have caught UTIs from using the facilities.
If you are thinking about joining, save your money and look elsewhere. Management clearly does not care about member feedback, cleanliness, or basic respect.
Employee was extremely professional and helpful

A gd gym with a variety of equipment everyone seems friendly here (not like I talk to anyone)😂only when I need tooooo but the gym is clean overall, spacious has a women’s side only thing is not much equipment there which is understandable as the room is full of equipment they can fit. I would recommend this gym 💯

Machine are very old and some of them are broken also toilets always uncleaned and according to the price it’s not worth it at least reduce the gym membership price or improve the equipment and cleanliness and I have never seen any jd staff in the gym

Great atmosphere love how dark it is.
Toilet wall was absolutely smeared with shit and snot and gross. A lot of the machines don’t have pins for the weights so you can’t use them unless another machine is free you can take from which is really annoying.

I joined the gym because of the ladies-only section, but I'm really disappointed after my first time there. The equipment in the ladies' gym is faulty; it's not working properly. Midway through, the elliptical machine stops, which is really annoying. The exercise bicycle is totally out of order, and there's no other workout equipment in the ladies' section. Please improve the ladies' section. The air conditioning in the ladies' section is also not working well. Because of all this, I have to use the communal area of the gym, and I feel hesitant there. I have to wear my abaya in the communal area.

Monday 25th May I used the gym before work and had planned to shower and change post gym but your changing rooms where not opened at 0500 as advertised this resulted in me having to go in the opposite direction direction to shower and change and made me late for work that left me feeling really dissatisfied

Great gym experience 💪 but a little expensive and extremely busy😞 that's why I only gave 4 stars

Really like JD Gyms — the atmosphere is great and it’s a nice place to work out. It feels welcoming and motivating, and the equipment is good too. Definitely a gym I enjoy going to.

Great that it has a women's only room, it’s the main reason I use this Gym -
However, it needs more running machines. Some of the machines in this room are never used, while others are in constant use, meaning long waits to use them.
Finally, the air conditioning unit is never switched on meaning the room gets too hot.
Thank you.

Loads of facilities - always busy but at the same time you rarely struggle to get on any machine you need. The interior is styled nicely too.

As for someone who never ever have been in the gym, I am very impressed with the place and the staff. When I went there for the first time Matt ,the manager took his time to show me around, explain all options. He didn't make me feel stupid asking questions about simple things, and that was one of my worries.Startinf to feel that it's becoming my happy place 😉
100% recommend!!! 🫶🏼

Really good gym, welcoming atmosphere and good facilities. sometimes a little too busy but it's open 24 hours so it's not a big deal

Hate complaining but unfortunately there’s been such a lack of management for such a long time now so felt I needed to raise the issues.
Kit Issues:
Leg press out order for 12 weeks now. Unable to keep this in my training programme now as can never get on it on an evening.
Chest press has been out of order for 8weeks. This means having to wait an age on an evening to get on it, if able to at all.
The benches have wheels missing. This has been the case for 5+ months.
All the cable machines have either one or both sides which are faulty. Posters went up on Nov saying all to be replaced in December. This never happened.
The rowing machines rarely have batteries. One has had broken foot straps for well over a year.
The rower in the far corner has not had batteries (with the battery casing and screw left on the floor) for well over 6months.
Both spin bikes on the gym floor have had not footstraps (one broken and left on floor) for 6months+
The Airbike seat twists when sit on it. This has been like this since I joined a year and half ago.
Both ski-ergs have been without batteries on and off for 6+ months+ and both have loose screws at the bases.
There are now no small gym mats- all removed from the studio.
There are now hardly any small plates. Never replaced.
All the cable machines have either one or both sides which are faulty. Posters went up on Nov saying all to be replaced in December. This never happened.
The Swiss ball in the studio has been flats since I joined. Never replaced.
Cleanliness issues:
The kit is thick with dust (rowers especially)
Every evening last week there was used chewing gum in the treadmill drink holders.
Chewed fingernails have been by the heavy weights for 2weeks.
The showers are vile on an evening and weekend. No toilet roll, no hand wash. Last week there was used tissue on the floor which was still there the next morning.
I hate complaining but am now somewhat resentful at paying membership for facilities which are really poorly maintained and to attend a gym which is, unfortunately, really poorly managed.
