About us

We are a British manufacturer designing and manufacturing luxury lighting and homeware in the English countryside. Visit our showrooms in Bath and Suffolk.

Gorgeous lights and accessories are the lifeblood of our business and understanding how they can change the mood of your interior lies at the heart of what we do. Beautiful, well-made lighting and fittings are truly transformative and we are passionate about sharing our products and ideas with you.

We are great believers in British manufacturing and are proud of our heritage in engineering and ironwork. Anything we don't make ourselves, we source from British manufacturers wherever possible because we believe in supporting UK companies and it makes good business sense. By selling directly to our customers and prioritising UK industry, we can ensure our products meet our exacting quality control standards and keep control over the supply and demand.

To this end, all our products are designed, assembled and hand finished in-house, using traditional techniques that have been passed down through the generations. In our workshops we employ a wide array of processes - laser cutting, spinning, welding, blacksmithing, antiquing, beeswaxing, polishing and painting, as well as making shades, curtains and blinds.

Thanks to our recent acquisition of artisan glassmakers - Suffolk Glass - we can also now include glass blowing and pressing to our list of skills.

From farming roots

Over the past 20 years Jim Lawrence has worked very hard to build up a reputation for making classic, high quality products using traditional, handcrafted techniques.

The story of Jim Lawrence began in 1994 at his Suffolk farm. Jim was busy rearing pigs and cows but it was clear that stock farming on such a small scale was not going to be profitable and Jim needed to find something else to do.

He decided to set up a forge in one of the farm buildings and experimented by making specialist pieces for friends and neighbours. From this modest beginning, Jim began producing a small range of candlesticks and chandeliers and selling them at fairs and markets.

He then moved on to gates, railings and curtain poles and from the reaction of his customers' he realised there was a demand for stylish, designer quality fixtures and fittings for the home, made with natural materials.

Following the company's first substantial order making park fencing for a local farmer, Jim was able to expand, refurbishing the farm buildings and employing more people in order to start selling by mail order. When a customer asked if his candlesticks could be made electric, the lighting side of the business began and now accounts for 60-70% of the company's sales.

Today we employ a skilled team of 150 engineers, welders, painters, seamstresses, designers, lampshade makers and technicians, alongside a full cohort of support staff. We have come a long way since our farm days, and you may no longer have to bump down a country track to find us, but our ethos remains the same: to provide beautiful, individually hand finished products, and deliver the highest possible level of customer service.

Jim Lawrence is proud to be a member of the Lighting Industry Association Quality Assurance Scheme (LIAQA), meaning that we have achieved recognition by the UK’s leading lighting trade association that both we as a company – and our lighting products - conform to the highest standards in quality and safety.

Jim Lawrence is just perfect. I have bought things from other cheaper retailers but Jim Lawrence is just above and beyond anyone else… buy cheap, buy twice!!

The staff at Jim Lawrence were incredibly helpful and polite. They were knowledgeable and efficient when I placed the orders over the telephone and confirmed and invoiced speedily. The rimlock case was beautifully made…

The rimlock case was beautifully made and the keep was robust and a perfect match.
The deadlock was fine but when the latch was withdrawn it twisted which seemed odd. It doesn’t work as well as it looks.
The knobs were slightly oversized for the lock.
If would be nice if it had come with an escutcheon.

As a British manufacturer selling direct to the end user, we endeavour to keep our prices as low as possible for all our customers. We do not differentiate between trade and retail and do not build an extra margin into our retail prices in order to cover a discount for the trade. We believe in one fair price for everyone.

Highly recommend

Lovely shop with some very individualised products.
The bathroom light pull cord I purchased was perfect for a traditional Victorian house which I hadn't found anywhere else.
Customer service was excellent, very helpful and polite. Timely with postage. Would highly recommend.
