First class training for teens

I previously trained with Garry many years ago, so when my son bored of karate and boxing training I knew exactly what we should go. Garry is an excellent Krav Maga instructor, teaching the kids how to train safely with each other whilst proving them techniques to deal with real world situations. He has a great manner with the kids, and I would recommend anyone who is considering self defence training for their children to come here.

Dealing With Sudden Violence Workshop

A realistic course providing you with the thought process and techniques in defending yourself against an attacker that is full of rage and just cannot be 'talked down'. The course content was thorough and progressive throughout the session. John and his training staff are enthusiastic and first rate in teaching their craft and the course has the perfect pace to prepare you for the finale !

I would suggest you attend with a training partner with a similar skill level as yourself if possible as the intensity and progression through this course may/will be limited to their strength, fitness and ability.

My first workshop ( sudden violence).

Didn't know what to expect from my first workshop or wether I had enough training so far ( 8 weeks) the class was well explained with simple to follow demonstrations with instructors keeping a keen eye on progress before the final drill.
By the end of the lesson I had taken on a technique I could use confidently in a situation but not only that I learnt a little more about myself, especially my flaws! Not pointed out but picked up buy myself once the buzz had worn off.. I took away from the lesson more than what was offered and this would hugely improve my chance in a real life situation. Top draw instructors, highly recommend and I'll definitely be getting involved in future workshops.*****excellent.

Dealing with Sudden Violence Workshop

The workshop on Dealing with Sudden Violence was up to the usual high standards of this club.

It started with the chief instructor, Jon Bullock, explaining what the workshop was about, what we would be covering and discussing how 97% of conflicts between people are generally verbal but the remaining 3% have no issue to resorting to violence and that there is normally some sort of build-up that would lead to that point.

From there the instructors explained and demonstrated what we would be doing, building up the techniques we would be using, so we knew why as well as how. The drills were built up in a way that tried to simulate what might happen, rather than being there ready for the attack, you might be talking, gesturing with your hands and arms like you would do in a normal conversation / argument, when one party would then 'attack' and you would defend yourself.

The end drill was designed to get the adrenaline going and the heart pumping as if in a real argument. Two of the instructors were suited up in body armour then, once you were told what had happened (in this case a car accident), you had them yelling at you while you tried to de-escalate the situation and then defend yourself when they attacked. Very effective and realistic, also intimidating from where you couldn't see their face due to the headguard.

The thing I took away from this the most was how quickly things can escalate and that not everyone plays by your / society's morals or rules, you can find any number of videos on YouTube where an argument gets out of hand ending with one person being caught off guard by the sudden attack.

It's these sorts of workshops that are provided by the club that make you aware and hopefully prepare you for this sort of situation should you ever have the misfortune to find yourself in that position.

As a club, I cannot recommend it enough, I have been going for several years now and I am still learning and enjoying it. Besides the self-defence techniques, the instructors explain how certain situations might occur, to de-escalate or run if you have the chance, the use of distance and verbal warnings.

if you want to learn self-defence to protect yourself and loved ones, I would recommend checking this club out first.

Another great Krav Maga Elite workshop on Saturday

Another great workshop on Saturday - dealing with sudden violence!! This could be after a car accident, bunping into someone who takes offence or just road rage. Dealing with fully body armoured attackers at the end of the session was a great reality check. Can't recommended these sessions enough.

Sudden violence workshop.

A thoroughly enlightening experience in Battlesbridge on Saturday afternoon. Jon Bullock presented the subject matter clearly, building up to a truly daunting final summary! He was greatly supported by Aidan Ahmet and Craig Winters. Thanks also go to Colin and Dave for giving and taking verbal and physical abuse! The event, as ever, was well organised by Chris Wright. These workshops are worth their weight in gold!

Great Session

What a great workshop, even for us novices we had 3 hours of learning how to deal effectively with really close up, in your face problem situations. Really useful instruction

And more intense than any HIIT training you could ever imagine, great great fun :)

Many thanks to all involved.

Was a great session

Was a great session. Gain valuable insight from the Team on how to deal with the situation. Everything I had learnt across the afternoon gave me the confidence to deal with the higher pressure situation simulated in the summary drill.
Sometimes, situations do not allow you to simply walk away. Standing with your children, or alongside other lived ones means you will stay and protect them. Talk down the situation where you can, but training through this system is giving me confidence to tackle the sudden and unexpected. Great workshop. James Wilby.

Highly recommended

The workshop built up students' skills gradually and progressively in preparation for an intense end drill. The end drill put students in a controlled, pressurised situation which made them have to react to an unpredictable situation. The instructors were professional and knowledgeable, able to answer questions. The instructors recognised the fact that the situations could be different for women, especially if it meant a test of strength, for example, which may mean other techniques would need to be used, which is reassuring in a system which is heavily male. A very enjoyable, productive and enlightening session.

I once enjoyed Krav Maga Elite

Pre January 2019 Krav Maga Elite"s training classes where very good, I enjoyed them a lot. They had a mixture of locations, instructers and what came with that was different students to train with at different places. This gived me flexibility in choosing a preference, as each location had a different 'vibe'. I also enjoyed training outside a lot, as the perks of the classes being at school halls, there was always a field, or space on concrete near by to do some outside training which mixed it up and gave us new terrain to train on.

Having different instructors at different locations allowed me to see what instructors training methods and way of explaining and ultimately teaching fit with me, as how one understands, learns and comprehends is different for every person. If two people see, comprehend and understand reality differently there is going to be a harder time understanding where a person is coming from and this is not ideal if one has a particular way of learning and comprehending within their psyche. Fortunately for me there was only one instructor out of the five I trained with that I had this challenge with.

Also, pre January 2019, for the monthly price of £69.99 we got 2 hours of training each class from grade P2. Basic 1 hour and 15 minutes and the advanced straight after for 45 minutes. With this I definitely felt like I got more out of it, in terms of learning the techniques and much more fitter, and much more flexible, which ultimately made it more worth going.

Post January 2019, when Krav Maga Elite opened their own training center and all classes would be there. The training had changed and was only for 1 hour. It was separated into two groups one for beginners and the other for P2 grade and above, each being only one hour each. So fitness suffered, flexibility suffered as there wasn't enough time to focus on this. Also for me there wasn't a chance to even do the beginners class before my class to increase my training, one because all the more advanced students did not do this so I would be basically too advanced to train in that group. Unlike pre January 2019 classes where the advanced and beginners were mixed for the first 1 hour and 15 minute class, so I'd be able to partner with someone of equal skill.

The training center is all in one place, quite small too. I had only one choice of one instructor dominantly, a second one if lucky. Which decreased the chances of learning from different instructors, or even having the choice to stick to one if I like the way they instruct and articulate their understanding to me of the techniques and reasoning behind them.

The price went up to £79.99, but I was technically getting less training out of it than before, even if I trained 5 nights a week here at 1 hour length each class.Training for two hours each class three times a week pre January 2019 was much much better.

Pre January 2019, I even got much more time to go over the curriculum in class in preparation for the grading, could pretty much spend the whole class preparing leading up to the grading event. Leading up to one grading event I noticed the lack of awareness or priority in class of the grading event coming up. It was a stark contrast compared to the pre January 2019 where there was an ambience of enthusiasm, motivation and dedication coming from the instructors to get the students prepared for the grading events. Yes there is paid workshop for preparation, but for £79.99 already a student should be able to have the mentoring, training and attention to be able to focus on that in class sufficiently if one chooses to grade, without needing to pay for a workshop to get the required training to be prepared for the grading event. This, Krav Maga Elite did well in pre January 2019.

In conclusion, I once enjoyed training at Krav Maga Elite a lot, but, for reasons above and more, the positive aspects that made it enjoyable and worth it for me were no longer there.

Reply from Krav Maga Elite - Self Defence & Fitness Training

Hi Teejay,

Thanks so much for the review, we appreciate it.

Of course we do need to address some of the points, as some of them have inaccurate information.

It is worthy noting that between the time you used our services, and the date of this review, a fair amount of time has passed and therefore, the services as you describe them have changed a fair amount.

For example, our Mastery/Advanced students now have access to 5 classes a week, plus free workshops every 6 weeks and, our in-house grading preparation training is free. So in fact, the training options are more than ever.

(There is a paid event offered by our governing body for all UK trainees).

We now have varied pricing options and, to note that the prise rise from our school hall classes to the full time centre was only £2.50 a week (please see below for the added benefits).

It is also worthy of note that the training is focused on self defence, rather than grading. Yes, there is a grading system to measure progress, however this is a by-product and I note your main focus was grading, which is also where frustration may have occurred,

To return to your feedback from the beginning....

We use to operate in school halls, yet due to sudden cancellations by the schools, limited parking, cleanliness issues and no safety matting, we decided we needed to take the step up to running our our training centre.

Moving from school halls to a centre which is 4,500 sq ft in size, with over 145 sqm of matted walls and floor, with changing rooms, showers, private parking and spectator seating is of course, a big move and will come with its challenges.

Any restrictions on training time initially was during our 1st year, when we were seeing what worked, monitoring capacity and ensuring that our members got the training that was right for them. With such a big move, there are lots of things to figure out.

It became clear that mixing beginner students with those more advanced was not always beneficial, for either group, therefore the aim of split classes is to focus the training.

This has received amazing feedback and has given our members are clearer path of progress.

It is worthy of note that you, as an experienced boxer, coming into Krav Maga training, this type of split class model may have seen less 'all access' to any classes, but more specific training for you.

Furthermore, as an experienced boxer, it would be unfair on some occasions to pair you with someone of little experience, as you wish to train at a certain intensity, and that person may not be at that level yet.

Having said that, 'all access' classes has the assumption that people will attend a lot, whereby in actual fact our members choose the days that suit them best and then attend based on other commitments in their lives and generally attend on the same days, rather than coming and going whenever.

(I note from our systems that your attendance was very intermittent and was very focused on grading, therefore you may have not got the benefit from the available classes, let alone had it been 'all access').

Having said that, as mentioned above, advanced students now enjoy 5 classes a week and free workshops every 6-weeks.

Regarding varying instructors. The instructors have a roster/hours of work (like any other job) which is set out based on their roles and responsibility. All of them follow our structured lesson plans that are pre-written and delivered in a specific order. This way we can ensure consistency,

You are absolutely right that many things changed from renting school halls to a permanent training centre, that would always be the case.

We feel the club operates at a higher level of professionalism, offering classes to the right people at the right level with excellent facilities dedicated just for them.

You preferred the training pre-January 2019 as it was a more loose approach, due to our lack of control over the training space. We could not have continued to operate in this manner, it was unfair to our members and to the instructors and eventually, the club may not have continued. Which is something nobody wanted,

Thank you very much for being a member of Elite Teejay. We are glad you enjoyed the training and are of course sorry you didn't see the move to our own centre as positive, and felt you couldn't have given it some time to then benefit from the changes and benefits listed above.

Best Wishes.

The Elite Team.

Pre-grading workshop

Very well organised event particularly given the high number of people training. Lots of clear instruction on areas to improve on and the time went really quickly and a lot of techniques were covered!

Content was delivered at a good pace…

Content was delivered at a good pace with different variations for the different levels.
Checkpoints of each technique was given.
Individual and group points were given out after each section and sufficient time was given for those points to be recorded.

Really well structured event

Really well structured event, especially with the amount of content to cover off. Fairly distributed between the different grading levels and we all got to learn other levels for future reference

The only slight criticism I would have is the organisation of the matts, there wasn't too much space for the number, however that has nothing to do with the quality of the event or the instructors. Definitely worth the cost and the time.
