Best decision

I recently finished one of the Make an Album With Mike programs. I signed up for a collective experience of making an album. I got way more than I payed for. Mike has put so much deep consideration and effort into removing the barriers between an artist and their music. Not every interaction with Mike is comfortable but it's always enriching and enlightening. He has so many great insights and has turned those insights into tools. I don't think I'll use all his tools all the time, but there's probably no tool of his that I won't put to use in my music or other life challenges going forward. Bottom line is I signed up to create an album and came out the other side not just with my first album, but also feeling more motivated, more confident, happier, and I'm procrastinating a lot less. A fantastic experience from start to finish and I can't wait to do it again.

Make an album with Mike 7

I really enjoyed the programme and I feel like a learned a lot on a few different levels:

- having a method and process for creating and developing music, and specifically an album

- getting a lot of insights from Mike (and the other coaches) based on his own experience and those he has spent time coaching

- hearing from other musicians who are going through the same process as me

The course is quite intensive. Of course you don't have to join every session but I think most people will get as much as they give - so clear the decks and put as much time as you can into 3-4 months of music making.

I don't think I really have any criticisms. I found the Trello machine a bit awkward at first but I really see the point of it now. In theory you could do a lot of that stuff in a notebook which in some ways I would prefer, but it ultimately wouldn't work so well when you've got 100 pieces of music that are in your machine.

I've still got a few things to do to finish my album but I'm already thinking about my next and I'm likely to join another of Mike's programs sometime in the future when I feel like I need another boost.

Thanks to Mike, the coaching team, and the other learners. It was a great experience and it's moved me forwards in a lot of ways.

Worth it by far

This program was exceptional and worth every penny. Mike goes above and beyond to ensure each individual's understanding of the material and concepts. He listens to questions closely and carefully answers each one, even returning to questions throughout the session. He sets time aside for any individual who requests throughout our sessions, which often has great benefit to the group. Mike is a true coach, trying his absolute hardest to get the best from us. Beyond the insane amount of music I produced during this time, I learned how to manage my creativity in a way that exponentiated my output while making things much, MUCH less painful. I will probably be back for more, but intend to take what I learned into the rest of my life. Also, Mike's ability to exude energy into the void of a zoom audience is remarkable.

No practical examples

Would have been nice if you would have generated something in those minutes you ask us to do so to see some practical examples. Otherwise, it was just sharing with us a plan to create tracks. We can find plenty of plans online.

Thanks for this Turbo Track Attack feedback. I am considering it carefully. I tend to avoid "practical examples" because I have noticed over the years that people tend to zero in on the specifics of the example - rather than using the example as something to apply to their process.

For example... 🤓

If I give an example of one of the stages for a songwriter writing a song, then anyone who is an instrumental musician assumes this isn't for them or doesn't apply to them.

Also, from what you said, you might not have taken the action as I laid it out. Maybe you felt you needed an example to do that?

Because this is a workshop - you DO the steps (even if you're uncertain you're "doing it right"), and in taking the steps, this negates the need for an example. Making music through the workshop is how you learn and understand much more than any example. Because then YOU are the example. :)

Anyway - I take your feedback seriously and will think more about how I can avoid the downsides of examples. Thank you Ioan.

There's something profound going on here...

I joined the Make an Album with Mike program because I wanted the accountability and companionship of a group to spur me to make more music. As a relative beginner to recording music in a DAW, my previous efforts had been sporadic and inconsistent.
As the programme began, I realised there was much more going on. It threw me at first. After all, here was I, happily pottering with my musical ideas whilst being part of a community of fellow musicians. I didn't need any more than that. I certainly didn't need the imposition of being told how to conduct the creative process! I admit I was perplexed and annoyed by the realisation that there was a method to follow. However, I decided that I had paid my money so I might as well surrender to participating in the process as it unfolded.
As each stage, I found myself challenged. The approach was unfamiliar. I thought I must surely be too old to learn it. In hindsight, and after trying it out, I can see it's very simple. And very, very effective.
My favourite sessions were the Sunday ones. During the music making live calls I would get crazily inspired, I'd let go of the usual thinking processes, and something more daring would take over. Some of the best fun I've had (with my computer on!) happened in those sessions.
Then in the very last session, the bonus 'Release' call, it all came together. The work we did in that session gave meaning to the whole project. It was as if putting in the very last piece of the puzzle was what lit the whole thing up.
I can't help wondering what my experience of the programme would have been like had we covered that topic at the very beginning...
I think if I were to go through Make an Album with Mike a second time, I would be a different person, free of resistance. Understanding the whole process feels like an amazing foundation for beginning again with all of my heart engaged. The first time, I tested it all the way. But somehow I needed to do that. And it passed with flying colours.

From scaredy people pleaser to grounded artist

When I first started I was so scared of criticism, what “they” (anyone from experts to social media trolls) might say, and I was locked into a box of perfectionism.

After a few rounds of Make an Album with Mike, completing and releasing my album, I truly feel like an artist.

I’ve honed my artistic viewpoint.
I trust my taste and my sensibilities.

I know what works for me and it’s easy to let feedback and opinions slide off my back.

I feel safe growing.
I feel safe accepting who and where I am.

And most of all I feel able to be honest and vulnerable about my art, which is really where I want to be.

Thank you Mike and the amazing team of coaches!
Thank you my fellow MAWMs.

This is a great community to develop your artistry.

This program changed my life.

This program changed my life in the best way possible. I think if it wasn't for Mike, I might not be making music and feeling optimistic about it at this point. Working with Mike is the best thing that happened to my music. Instead of trying to put a one size fits all blue print onto you, his method gives you the space to develop your unique style, focus on developing the skills YOU want while inhabiting healthy, sustainable creative habits that will help you to improve at making music on a level you can sustain.

Make More Music Than You Thought Possible

Before I did a course with Mike, I was very slow at making music. I was precious with demos, laboured over tiny changes and basically never got anything finished. Learning Mike's method has completely changed my life and outlook as an artist. I'm now making and finishing more music than I ever thought was possible, and what feels like the most exciting, progressive + authentic music so far. His method works for my scatty, overthinking brain so well + I can't really imagine approaching music making in any other way. He challenges many preconceptions about the creative process + what it means to be an artist ie. that it has to be torturous. So if you want to find a way to make more music consistently + find a flow that is fun, creative + freeing then I recommend you do his course. Fellow MMYLers are passionate about his method, because it works.
