While we don't verify specific claims because reviewers' opinions are their own, we may label reviews as "Verified" when we can confirm a business interaction took place. Read more

The service is terrible

The service is terrible. First, they said they wouldn’t pay anything because the provider was “out of network.” After I checked, they admitted it was in the network, but said that for €15/month you only get a tiny co-payment discount — about €12.5. To make it worth it, you’d need to see a doctor twice a week. Otherwise, it’s completely useless.

MGEN Health Insurance In Portugal is…

MGEN Health Insurance In Portugal is the worst in Europe. Submitted claims are not reimbursed, almost everything is rejected. You need a referral letter from your doctor for everything, and even with a referral letter from the doctor, the claims are not reimbursed. Also the costs of an operation on a limb are not reimbursed, because a detailed invoice is not presented. This is the height of borucratic, and practices of a third world country, where the service to the customer has a value of zero, while the annual premium that is paid per year only becomes more expensive, and you get nothing reimbursed. These types of health insurance companies are not for the consumer, but to fill their pockets with the premium that everyone pays for health insurance. Strongly discouraged to become a customer of MGEN in Portugal.

Won't cancel our policy

This company increased its charges despite no claims from us. we then cancelled the cover but despite this they still took 131.20 euros from out bank account. we have cancelled the direct debit but now they are invoicing us for payment on an account we have asked them to cancel three times and they have agreed to do so. They also agreed to refund the amount they took without our permission from our bank but have not done so. I think we need to look at making a formal complaint and perhaps having a solicitor involved as this is not acceptable. Friends have also used this company and they are happy to take the money but apparently never pay out for anything. Don't use this. They supposedly offer their services to ex pats, don't fall for it.

Dishonest business with dishonest business practices

Constant, consecutive, unilateral insurance premium increases despite no succesfull claims.

Allegedly covers medical expenses abroad but kept demanding more information and rejected the claim when I tried to use it. Made my partner return to the hospital abroad during the pandemic and pay for documentation in English, then refused to cover the hospital expenses by considering them consultation expenses and requiring more (arguably impossible and unnecessary) documentation in English despite multiple supporting documentation in English and the insurance policy covering hospitalization.

Advertises solidarity, not leaving anyone behind, not having medical questionnaires, and not excluding pre-existing diseases, yet requires written justification describing the reason for the change and subject it to technical risk assessment and acceptance if you wish to change plans.

Buggy online form to upload expenses.

Unilaterally raises charges despite contract and no successful claims.
