Disappointment

Old version was very useful. Offers some great features and analytic tools.
Premium version is a disappointment.
Cannot access all of the features in premium version. No flexibility in display of information.
Print and download to Excel features are more cumbersome.
Customer service is nonexistent. Zero!
Arrogant policy of not accepting cancellations for a year shows a disrespect for customer.
I will not renew premium version if changes are not made.
If your needs are for portfolio management and basic analysis, there are plenty of other low cost and free options. Yahoo for example.
Definitely do not recommend at this time.

Some fund and stock info (widely…

[Note also their reply below. 3 years for a vacuous reply not addressing any specifics. I rest my case about their customer focus.]

Some fund and stock info (widely duplicated elsewhere however).

The tools could be useful, but like many reviewers I have serious doubts about relying on any of them or the information contained.

I’ve often hit errors when trying to access a premium feature (just getting an unhelpful error instead of being able to access an offered trial or sign-up) meaning that I’ve abandoned any intentions to try out the premium tools for long term use.

Another example is %market weight in the portfolio tool giving just bananas random percentages bearing absolutely no relation to what is a very simple calulcation.

I’ve reported but got a fairly standard “the issue’s been escalated”. I did offer to help the devs with their sums, so we’ll see :-)

My career has been in software engineering and as a CIO and CTO. If I’d allowed this sort of thing out the door or not fixed it within one day, I’d not have been in my job the next day. Destroying an essential brand characteristic thorough inadequate basic testing would have been unforgivable.

Unfortunately, interactive investor also uses some of Morningstar under the covers so I’ll need to consider whether I can stay with them also.

Total investment value in error

I have had ongoing problems with stock prices not being updates, solved twice over the last year.
Now I notice the investment value total column adds up wrongly.
MS said this is a known problem being worked on!! Three weeks on, no fix.
I also use Yahoo finance now.

Sets new standards in underdelivery

Morningstar is a top-class information provider and is the only one to provide certain data and analysis. They employ tens of economics PhDs and their Morningstar Direct appears to be a good offering for professional advisors.

Here I'm discussing Morningstar Premium which they offer to retail customers. Sitting on a treasure trove of data, it manages to set underperformance standards for a paid SaaS offering in 2022.
- An error in their ETF pricing wiped out 99% of a holding and displayed a huge error on the site product page; they fixed it 40+ days after my signaling it
- If subscription renewal fails due to credit card expiration, they don't bother to tell you (happened twice in 4 years)
- The "search security" feature occasionally stops working and may stay so for several weeks.
- Their "portfolio report" was attaching empty pages to the PDF for the last two years ((discontinued since Jan'22 due to 'problems')
- The software used to build the service was good for the year 2008 or so (Java Server Pages?), not updated since, except for a change in font.

Obviously the service is marginal to their business and is purposefully neglected. Perhaps they don't want to improve it, to avoid professionals using this instead of Morningstar Direct. They don't care about tarnishing their brand because their market is B2B.

Having said that, the service is unique and at a low price, I will renew as soon as they fix the security lookup and I can update my portfolio.

Stock advice pathetic. Buy ratings for months even years for such stocks as Magellan, AGL, Pushpay which have halved or more in their price. Morningstar wealth destroyers.

morningstar portfolio - false update claims.

morningstar claim that stocks in your portfolio have prices 15 minutes delayed. The updates to prices has yet again stopped. This is a regular occurrence and various excuses are given for the failure. Eventually the updates recommence, after a few days or weeks.

If you want to monitor your portfolio, go somewhere else. Don't fall for the Premium User sales pitch. Once they have your money they will not care about giving what you SEE they say they provide on their web site.

What an awful company

What an awful company. I spoke with a gentleman in sales called Jeff, who has to be one of the rudest customer service people ever. Prior to this rude man I had spoken with two pleasant ladies, one in sales and one in support. The two ladies had tried to help as there was a technical glitch on their website which was locking up my account in some kind of limbo. I spent an hour trying to sort this out, so by the time I got through to the sales representative called Jeff I was already frustrated, but unlike the two ladies Jeff didn't seem to care in the slightest that I'd had a big chunk of my afternoon wasted. I can understand why they have such bad reviews on here. Definitely puts me off ever using Morningstar.

Premium doesn't work

I paid for premium, yet when I log in it still says 'free'.

I've been on the phone with them 3 times and they just explain that they don't understand what is wrong and will look into it.

They don't respond to emails or inquiries either.

And with all that in mind, their research is not even good. I really wish someone would launch a competitor.

Morningstar needs to stop outsourcing to India and employ Australian staff to answer calls

OMG what a joke this company is . I read an article by John Rekenthaler concerning the lack of financial literacy being taught in schools. In some ways I agree with him on this topic and in many I disagree . I wanted to contact him in relation to his article. Firstly, I was put through to a Indian outpost in Mumbai where somebody who could barely speak English tried and failed to connect me with Australia Morningstar . Once again this failed . I tried a further 3 times and failed in all attempts due to this company NOT employing Australian receptionist staff to answer calls from possible clients . John asked readers to get in contact with him if we , as readers , had some form of feedback . John , I wanted to give you some feedback buddy . My father taught me a very valuable lesson in life , one to which you obviously were not taught , or if so , do not practise . Make sure your own house is in order before you start making calls on topics you are not fully aware of and lie outside your professional capabilities/ understanding . As a teacher I can make some judgement calls on this topic . Those calls I wanted to share with you , but due to the failure on your company's part to have an efficient and easy contact method this was not possible . One of the most basic lessons in running a business John is that you have a term called Fiancial implosion due to outsourcing and brand defacing . Your company is doing exactly this and many people are fully aware of this as I have found through some research . If you outsource and your product appears cheap ( let's face it, this is the reason Morningstar has outsourced first contact from clients ) people will associate 'cheap' with your product .

Over several days trying to log in to…

Over several days trying to log in to the UK site and set up and compare funds and portfolios. The site and Morningstar may as well not exist for all the response they offer. Dead in the water. Absolutely atrocious.

There you go. Three and a half years later they send a meaningless boilerplate reply. What a useless outfit.

Customer service is terrible

Customer service is terrible.
Staff unsure what they are doing to be completely honest.
Waiting time for orders to be took was ridiculous. Meanwhile staff walking about talking. Eventually had to go to bar myself and ask could we order. Wouldn’t recommend cocktails either as the glsssrs come half filled. Just a terrible experience all in would not recommend.

I am still locked out of my premium…

I am still locked out of my premium account since the 5th August despite an active subscription running until June 2023
Since January 2021 I haven't received the monthly portfolio monitor. I was told me that for some reason my e mail which had worked for the last ten years) now bounces back the reports. I have been a premium subscriber since June 2011.

In July I changed the e mail and my password in order to try to overcome this. I was then after an initial period when the premium service worked for a few days the subscription was changed to the free non premium service without any explanation. I have highlighted this to the customer services on a number of occasions they respond-saying it was escalated and they are working on a fix but unfortunately nothing has actually been achieved. I am still locked out of the premium services.

I cant find any complaints policy on their web site? They should have one. I would like to make a formal complaint about the service you are providing and I am paying for and not receiving.
I am becoming frustrated and irritated by the lack of progress as nothing has actually been achieved to resolve the problems.

DO NOT SIGN UP TO ANY FREE TRIAL PERIOD WITH MORNINGSTAR. I entered my credit card details which returned an error message and as I never received ANY email communication from the organisation confirming the account set up, thought my details can't have gone through. They have been charging my account every month for a service I never used and to make it worse, you cannot get hold of anyone in the organisation to make a dispute or stop the card payment. I have now had to cancel with my credit card directly. This is a really bad way for them to conduct themselves.
