Poor Customer Service

Mrs Bow Tie has a lovely website presented beautifully and the way the products are packaged is wonderful. On top of this there also seem to be some genuinely nice products available and they are a small UK business which I'm always up for supporting. Unfortunately for me, I ordered a pocket square, the quality of which I was disappointed with taking the above into account. Although I knew the item came pre-folded and attached to a piece of card, I expected it to be a whole pocket square, folded to shape and attached to some card. What arrived was essentially a tiny section of fabric attached to a piece of card. For me, this seemed massively overpriced as you can buy a plethora of beautiful 'actual' hand made pocket squares for similar prices elsewhere.

In addition, the colour also didn't go with the rest of my wedding suit so I decided to return the pocket square paying the return postage in the process. Sian, from Mrs Bow Tie responded informing me I couldn't receive a refund as the goods were damaged (unfortunately, a member of my family had folded the card the pocket square was attached to creating a fold mark). I considered this a little tight seeing as how this section would be cut off eventually and hidden in the pocket hence it would never be visible. This aside, I accepted this in the first instance and requested the goods be sent back to me seeing as how I had paid for the item. Sian refused to do this until I had paid to have it posted back at an extortionate cost of £3.99 (suddenly the cost of the original pocket square had increased somewhat as this would be the 3rd time I would now be paying postage on the same item). After a long series of email exchanges in what felt like trying to get blood out of a stone, the entire time Sian came across as having an extremely bad attitude and being borderline arrogant offering no help whatsoever. Eventually, she agreed to one of my many compromises of sending the item back to me minus the packaging 2nd class (why she could not have offered this service in the first instance will remain a mystery). No customer should have to fight this hard for an item they have already paid for!

Overall, regardless of all Mrs Bow Tie's good points, the customer service experience has left a bad taste in my mouth and it would prevent me from shopping there again or recommending it to other customers. There are lots of other independent businesses out there that deserve the custom. For me the customer should always come first and evidently Mrs Bow Tie's first priority is profit profit profit, or at least that's how I felt throughout this experience.

Reply from Mrs Bow Tie

Hi Cory,

Thank you for your feedback. We’re very sorry to hear your experience with Mrs Bow Tie wasn’t a 5-star experience, and we’ve taken note of your comments. However, we feel we must raise a few points mentioned in your TrustPilot review.

We’re very sorry you were disappointed to find our pocket squares come stitched in a card casing, rather than having a loose fabric pocket square. Most customers love our idea of pre-folding it for them so that the pocket square retains its shape, but understandably this isn’t for everyone. However, we do clearly state on the website that the items are “pre-folded and stitched in place on a Mrs Bow Tie card which can be cut down to your desired depth,” and the product image clearly depicts the pocket square and its card casing.

With regard to getting a refund; in our returns policy (as viewable on our website in the “Returns Policies” section at the bottom of the page), we clearly state that we are happy to refund or exchange items on the condition that they are “unworn, unwashed, unaltered, undamaged, and have all tags attached and intact.” This is a policy you will find the vast majority of retailers have in place to ensure that we can resell the item to someone else after giving you your money back, so we don’t make a loss for the cost of making the item. The pocket square themselves also feature a removable tab at the top of the card which again reminds customers that if the tab is removed or damaged that they will not be entitled to a refund or exchange. As you’ve pointed out, the item you wanted to return was not in its original condition and was damaged due to bending the card casing it comes in. We feel it is unfair for you to suggest it is “tight” for us to refuse a refund on this basis simply because the card can be cut. We would not send a damaged or clearly used item to another customer. If you yourself had received the pocket square in the condition it was returned to us in, you would've been unhappy and justifiably so. Therefore this item is not resellable.

Despite all of this being clearly stated on our website, you decided to send the item back to us (and pay the postage to do so). When Sian at customer services kindly explained this to you, you were understandably disappointed after having been denied a refund and requested your item back. We were more than happy to send it back to you, but as the error of this misunderstanding was not with Mrs Bow Tie, you as the customer would have to pay to have it resent to you, as explained on our Returns Policies page.

To avoid paying our standard postage fee of £3.99, you requested we send the item back to you without the packaging. This is not something we normally do, as the packaging stops the item getting damaged during delivery and we want the item to arrive to you in the same condition it left us in, rather than worse. Despite explaining this to you, you still requested it be sent back without the packaging, so we agreed to your request to try and resolve the issue.

We have informed Sian of your views, and she is very sorry you felt she was arrogant to the situation. It is not in Sian’s interest to make your time with us an unpleasant experience, and was simply trying to explain to you our reasons for denying your refund on this occasion.

Terrible Customer Service

I purchased NINE bow ties for my groomsmen (that's over $300 plus shipping). When I received the order, it was not as I had anticipated, and returning has been an absolute nightmare. Since i live in the US, I paid $175 to return the package, and I'm still waiting on my refund because the company has been arguing with UPS about shipment for over a month. They've forced me to contact the UPS store multiple times and play middle man. As it stands, I'm out over $800 for some stupid bow ties. Go to brooks brothers or literally any other place on earth. Not worth the hassle or risk if you order is miss-handled.

Beautiful products, outstanding service.

I placed an order on the 20th of May, it was shipped about an hour later, and I received it the next day. Free delivery. The bow tie itself is of high quality, and superb finish. You really will not find a better product in the price band, or many above it. It also comes in a cool little box with paper "hay" and a handwritten note of thanks. I think it is time to expand my bow tie collection!
