Review summary

Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Considering 45 reviews, most reviewers were let down by their experience overall. Many customers found the basic banking processes frustrating, with issues like blocked cards and difficulties with simple bank transfers. Communication was often poor, and people reported not receiving updates or being informed about important account changes. The customer service was frequently described as terrible, with long wait times, unhelpful staff, and a lack of responsiveness, particularly through web chat. Online banking was consistently found to be unreliable and difficult to access, leading to problems with payments and account management. Some people were dissatisfied with the mortgage application process, finding it overly complicated and ultimately unsuccessful, even for loyal customers. Conversely, a small portion of people felt satisfied with the helpful and pleasant staff, specifically mentioning individuals who went above and beyond to resolve their issues.

PTSB disappointing service

PTSB has gone down the hill in the last few years. I feel very disappointed as it used to provide a great service when I joined over 10 years ago. But now is full of very high charges, rude customer service with zero care for long-term clients (their replies to complaint letters are full of excuses, no apologies and no intention to improve or fix your problem), plus it's almost impossible to speak to a person. Their new updated website gives errors often, and they've made things so complicated that in many occassions it doesn't let you log in, or simply doesn't easily let you check information from your account. I hope they get better but even if they do, sadly I might not see it as I'm considering changing to a new bank soon.

Centre should be open as per Ptsb voicemail they posted Christmas week, is closed and no lodgement possible using your own ATM

Unfortunately having gone up to the town across without a branch in our own town I was unable to lodge which is a basic self service process.later and upon calling the centre even though the message said you'd be open again today 30/12/24 i got the voicemail message as though I was calling New Year’s Eve, when you'd expect it to be closed as for 30/12 you lied. Detached from ordinary people when you cannot allow people to lodge their money with your own ATM and the fact this is even still an issue is ridiculous. You also make people need to call in to complete certain tasks which would make life for everyone concerned if they could do it at the ATM machine or online. At least when I opened my account in branch I was treated like a person. Doesn’t happen with dreadful AIB.

The frustration of trying to speak with an agent.

If I could give 0 stars to this appalling service I would. I’ve been trying to cancel my credit card. Cannot do it online. You must go to branch or call the number provided. Not a chance of speaking to a person. It’s appalling service. The app has endless issues. Is it any surprise they have 1 star on Trustpilot. And how ironic that the new ad campaign is titled “altogether More Human”

Robbed to access my own cash

Unfortunately I lost my bank card christmas eve and although permanent Tsb have an emergency cash option
which is really good, I think it's a disgrace you can only redraw 100 euro each time and your charged 2 euro each time you do it, and some might think it's security but it's not as your logging into your account online to do it so it's secure already and you giving your own phone number to get the message with the code. Everyone spends money at christmas so if I had to redraw 500 euro it's costing me 10 euro to access my own money, so wrong and I feel I'm been robbed...

PTSB time wasting

As with so many service providers, PTSB have tried to be clever by cutting costs by making it nigh on impossible to speak with someone and instead relying on technology to do the (half arsed) job. To add insult to injury, you are then forced to listen to a recording, ironically telling you how important your custom is to them, whilst simultaneously leaving you wait in the middle of a work day for 30-60 mins for support that is eventually, often provided by someone with, lets just say, communication skills that are not up to the required standards.

So today, I simply went to set up a Payee on my App. How hard can it be? App refused to allow me use my current account as the "from" account. So I phone PTSB and wait, and wait, and wait. Eventually I get a girl who sounds almost as pissed off as I feel. Long story short (too late!) she manages to set up the same Payee account, affects the transfer over the phone and leaves. I login to check everything was done ok and see she has mistakenly transferred just 10% of what I asked. Next I get a fraud alert text message from PTSB. I call the fraud line and I wait, and wait and wait. Guy has no idea why I got it except to say it was a random check after my transfer online and I need to call PTSB normal line to fix the transfer. I call PTSB and wait.......... eventually to be told that there is a limit on daily transfers and the girl couldn't have transferred the required amount. He transfers the balance to bring me up to the daily limit, tells me to wait 1 business day before trying to transfer the remainder of what I need and hangs up.

I login again and manage to transfer the remainder immediately, I just need to wait 1 business day for funds to arrive.

Now, what I would like to see is consumer rights legislation that allows customers to invoice service providers at their (proven) hourly rate when they can show that it was the service providers' incompetence that delayed a satisfactory outcome. I'm considering closing my PTSB account and moving everything over to Revolut, DDs, wages etc etc

i’m disappointed because

how is it that every other day, your app experiences some kind of technical issue. i have important bills i need to pay (as does many) and yet often times, i am left stressing for the day wondering when i will get my money. experiencing as many technical issues as this app does just makes me want to switch to a bank that is more reliable and accessible. another thing is that whenever your app does have one of its issues (which is a lot) i cannot go in and check how much money i have and therefore have to hold off on buying necessities or paying things as i do not know how much i have. that is really tiresome. your app never use to experience this many issues and i dont know what has happened but at this point, i am seriously considering switching to a different bank in the new year. i understand that any bank app can have an issue at any time but having them as much as yours is just getting really old. especially when it comes to a point where i cannot check how much i have.

PTSB seems to be in chaos

I always considered Permanent TSB to be one of the better banks to deal with, in terms of fees, professionalism, etc. I'm not sure what's happened, but they are an unmitigated disaster at the moment.

Chronic and ongoing tech issues - most days I can't get into the app, which is problematic as online payments need verification from within the app. A recent experience where my payment was declined (with no good reason) so I paid with another card, but PTSB had actually taken the money out though it was reading as declined.

Customer service is hit and miss when you get through, allow a good 45 minutes to reach someone and have your issue dealt with. Their monthly fees have now gone up to €8 a month.

Currently shopping around for an alternative, banking with PTSB is just not sustainable.

Absolutely the worst bank

Absolutely the worst bank I have ever been with. App which constantly crashes, lack of basic services, extremely high fees and absolutely useless customer service. The best you can do with this bank, it's to avoid it at all costs!!!

One of the worst bank in existence

One of the worst bank in existence. Obsoleted online technology, extremely low grade it system, vulnerable security. The same online banking issue wages not credited, app not working and in addition it takes 3-5 working days to generate a normal bank statement. Outsourced customer care team with no experience. USELESS BANK SHOULD NOT EVEN EXISTS

The worse bank ever

The worse bank ever. They are harassing their own customers over trivial cash lodgments. Additionally, they enforce their own rules, which are inconsistent with state policies regarding personal and business accounts.

Awful customer service

Awful customer service. I live abroad and have recently been trying to transfer some funds from my Irish PTSB account to another account. While I appreciate due diligence in avoiding online fraud this simple transaction has taken over a month and still has not been resolved despite me providing all they ask for. Complete incompetence leading me to be denied access to my own money. Appalling!

Just off the phone to customer service

Just off the phone to customer service, needed to activate my bank card on Apple Pay.

Took 5 attempts dialing in listening to the different options and every time I chose the wrong option it reaches a dead end and hangs up.

Eventually got though to the call center and 35 mins on the phone, the man tells me I failed the security questions because I could tell him the frequency of a direct debit even though I told her it was taken one time in the last 3 months they said I needed to tell them the frequency.

Bizzare experience that’s resulted in me paying my wages into Revolut and closing my PTSB after 20 years.

Can’t treat people like that 👍
