Had my Quella single speed for about 4 years. Commute daily, takes an absolute battering. Desperately needed a new wheel - hub had perished. Expected a simple hub but tyres and inner tube included to... See more

About Quella Bicycle
Written by the company
Fixies exist at the unique intersection of thoroughbred track racing and urban fashion. Quella was created to encompass the best of both. We combine vintage inspired, minimalist British design and 21st Century track technology to create elegant, timeless bikes that function at the top end of the fixie market and, importantly, don’t break the bank.
Since our launch Quella has evolved into a company with big brand capability and small brand personality, with customer service at the forefront of all we do. Our bikes are hand-built in our ‘Old Egg Shed’ on the outskirts of Cambridge by our experienced team of bike-builders, allowing you almost limitless freedom in the builds that we can undertake.

Quella EVO
Here is an update after a few months, about 600-700km:
I swapped the handlebar, stem, brake levers and brakes for cheap brand name parts, a big difference in performance now! Much better modulation and easier to press the levers, they don't "hang" anymore, and brakes close as soon as I press the levers. The old brake pads were almost worn out.
The rear rim has the paint worn out a bit, and it rarely squeaks, but the paint on the front is still going strong! Squeaks just the same, I will try to sand off the paint.
The angled mid-fork eyelet is a problem. I tried to mount a front rack on it, and I can't get it to be straight, it's visible when you see the wheel beneath it and there is about 2-3 degrees difference. I will try again with some spacers, but I'm not sure I can install it straight unless I tighten it too much and damage the mounting plate.
I swapped the tires for cheap 35c that actually measure 33 mm, and the clearance is pretty tight. I will try another brand later, it seems the chainstay clearance favors rounder, pointier tires, not flat ones.
Other than these, with good brakes, levers and kit, the bike is fun to ride around town, no complaints, it looks cool and it's what I wanted, I would give it a solid 5/5.
Original:
Quella Evo arrived yesterday. Assembly is easy, the frame and fork look and ride really nice, reasonable weight. The steel frame is comfortable and soaks up bumps nicely, BUT:
- the handlebar, stem, seatpost are very low quality, and they have a high gloss black finish, making the handlebar slip - you have to really, really tighten the stem.
- the wheelset and crankset are similar, they don't spin as smooth as expected (maybe after a period of riding it will be better)
- the biggest gripe is the brakes and levers, they are cheap and braking is horrible. The wheels braking surface is NOT machined, but painted with the same glossy black finish, at the moment the brakes squeak really bad, barely stop, and the finish is already starting to vanish as black dust. I will fine tune the brakes in the future to see if they can improve
- the front wheel is already out of true, after 5km. this never happened to me before, even after buying the cheapest road wheelset I could get. I don't expect weight savings or looks at this price, but sturdiness, and they do not deliver.
- not sure about the advertised tire clearance of 35c. Plenty of room with the stock 25c tires, I think 30c will be ok, but anymore is pushing it, as in a couple of mm or less is not enough for some dirtier conditions (it will get messy). Will test with CX tires.
- the front fork has mid-eyelets, one of them is at a slight angle

Quella Evo with Custom Paint
Loved the retro simplistic styling of the Quella Evo after seeing pictures of one online and decided I had to buy one. I wasn't disappointed!.The guys at Quella were very helpful and prompt in dealing with my questions and a few weeks ago I took delivery of a beautiful custom sprayed RAL3001 Red Evo. I have now done over 300 miles on this bike and it is a pleasure to ride (even on my daily commute into work!). The gearing seemed tough initially but it is getting easier as my fitness improves. Quella definitely get a thumbs up from me.
Very good product but slightly different from picture
I ordered a set of wheels which arrived on time but they were sligtly different from the one depicted on the website. The one I received are still good looking, but instead of black spokes and hub they had silver ones. Packaging and shipping were perfect.

Really bad for parts!
I bought a bike from quella I was very impressed at first but the brakes on the bike did not work properly no matter how hard I press them they do not stop the wheels properly, recently I buckled my front wheel and they do not sell individual wheels you have to buy a set that will cost over £120

Great bike and service
I ordered the Varsity Cambridge and the bike is amazing. Really happy with it! They were friendly enough to set it up fixed.
I really enjoy riding it and even took it out for a workout this weekend.

Flexible and friendly customer service
I have just bought the new quella evo and so far am happy with the bike and very impressed with the service I have recieved from Quella.
As I live in Cambridge near their store, they were able to arrange for their show room to be open outside of standard hours so I could visit and then to deliver the bike fully assembled to me the following day.
The staff I spoke to were friendly and knowledgeable and as an independent supplier were able to offer simple solutions which improved my bike

Great Company
Great communication and sales people, sized the bike perfectly.
Does need to come with assembly instructions and preferably trial assembled as back brake was jammed and front brake blocks not aligned.

Sales and delivery great but pre-build shocking
Website offers good overview of the bikes, options and timelines for delivery. However, on arrival I was really disappointed with the pre-assembly of the bike...I know you need to build most of it yourself but the bits that were meant to be done in factory were shocking like the fork not aligned to frame, brake pads on back no where near the rims. Most frustrating was the tools provided didn't fit...well they did sort but for example the align key was 5 sided and the screw fitting was like 8 sided...so real mis-match meaning couldn't get stuff tight.

Strong design and fun; good value for money with great customer service.
I bought a NERO for my son so I could have my own bike back. I doubt he'll be troubling me again.
Customer service was excellent from purchase, through delivery to sorting out a glitch with the mudguards a day or two later.
Recent months have seen more and more Quellas in Cambridge, UK. It's a cycle-savvy city so much must be good with these bicycles.
Good luck!

Amazing!
These guys are great. Ordered a Nero by phone and it was delivered to me on the other side of the country in less than 24hrs. Customer service was excellent, responding extremely quickly and efficiently to all enquiries and being very accommodating in fitting a set of tyres I ordered. It was a pleasure to deal with them.
The bike itself is great value and the matte black frame I got has a lovely finish.

Reliable
I've had my Darwin for 2 years still works after a few crashes but it comes at a cost as it's heavy. It's excel any for urban riding but wouldn't recommend for anyone doing long distance. Looks smexy with a tri-spoke wheel on the back.

Quella is excellent but delivery :-(
The service from Quella was excellent however the deliver company DPD was terrible, my bike box came destroyed and full of DPD tape. When I opened the box the my custom bike was damaged.

Bullhorn handlebars and tape
Great buying experience. Bought a set of chrome bullhorn handlebars with tape. With no extra cost the tape was installed with end plugs when it arrived. The parcell arrived very quicky. Parts were very cheap too. Will be buying again from Quella.
