A Tale of Two Booties

A Tale of Two Booties

You should use this moving company if you enjoy: (i) attempts to gross up your price by telling you the day before the pickup that a $1500 “local” delivery three hours away requires you to meet the van at the destination on the day of the pickup or be charged an extra $500 for next day delivery, (ii) arriving without the packing materials needed for the picture frames clearly specified in the contract, (iii) delivery vans that leak so badly in the rain that your soaked and shredded boxes need to be re-packed in the van at the destination in dry boxes that YOU supply because Shleppers doesn’t carry any, (iv) damage to the items you specifically noted as requiring extra care (in my case, a $5,000 stereo speaker gouged with severe force), (v) asking that the delivery men wear booties to protect your floor and carpets and, many emails later, being told it will cost you $50, so you buy booties yourself on Amazon for $1, and (vi) being charged for a full month of storage when the goods have been removed from storage in the first week of the month and having to call to ask for the pro rata refund THEN being told that the refund will be made in 2-3 business days THEN seeing no refund in two weeks THEN calling repeatedly and getting voicemail with no return call THEN getting through and being told that the refund was never processed. In short, if you want a moving company that is sleazy, incompetent and disrespectful, Shleppers is for you!

The movers did great

The movers did great. They were on time, moved very heavy items like it was no big deal. What I paid was reasonable, not too expensive. Good service that I’d recommend.

Shleppers Moving made my relocation

Shleppers Moving made my relocation so much easier than I expected. The crew was fast, yet careful with our things. This was my first time hiring a professional moving service, I’d work with them again on future moves.

Updated review

Updated review: This company is horrible. They ruined all of my furniture and some intentional. They didn't have anyone to come fix it. They said that even if the truck caught on fire, I will receive $300 for all of my belongings from them. This is not a moral company and not one to trust. If you care about your belongings, don't trust them.

Do NOT trust this company with valuable…

Do NOT trust this company with valuable or delicate items. I wish I had read more reviews before hiring Shlepper's. What should have been a straightforward move turned into a nightmare that destroyed a priceless family heirloom.

Before booking, we were explicit that we had a 100+ year-old antique piece that required special care. Shlepper's gave us multiple assurances they had extensive experience with antique furniture. We even had an independent antique expert assess the piece, who confirmed that proper disassembly and reassembly would be straightforward for any experienced mover. We sent videos, detailed instructions, and confirmed multiple times that the piece needed to be carefully disassembled before transport.

The moment the crew arrived, it was clear they had zero experience with antiques. They completely ignored our instructions and their own prior agreement to disassemble the piece, instead attempting to move it fully assembled. At our new building, they tried to force it through a doorway it clearly wouldn't fit through, then had to deconstruct it hastily on the sidewalk. During reassembly, they were extremely rough with the delicate 100+ year-old wood. The piece is now severely damaged.

When we contacted Shlepper's immediately, they were dismissive and refused to take responsibility for breaking their promises and falsely advertising themselves as experienced with antiques. Professional repair will cost $3,500. Their "resolution"? They offered us $60.

They demonstrated no expertise with delicate items and showed no accountability when their negligence caused damage. Save yourself the heartbreak and money--use a moving company that actually has the experience they claim.

The movers were on time. Our total moved distance was about 30 miles. The move was started and finished the same day. I felt these movers came well prepared, experienced and ame with some extra things that were needed during the move. Highly recommend the service and I would work with them again

I recently hired Shleppers to help with an out of the area move. They were hard working, very polite and did a great job with our 3 bedroom home move. They came highly recommended from a close family member, which helped push us in the direction of using them. I'm glad I went this route.

Have used this company several times…

Have used this company several times for local NY area moves, same estimator, always did a good job and recommended them to friends and family. After a seamless pick up in the NY area for 2 long distance moves, things rapidly went downhill. Shleppers Long Distance Manager went haywire with my credit card, not bothering to specify charges for each of the 2 separate moves, overcharging beyond the contracted 50% at pick up, and then refusing to correct the error, despite numerous emails and phone calls. Owner threatened that we would be responsible for any charge back fees that he might incur. Eventually, the overcharge was appropriately credited back to us. Arranging for delivery was the next obstacle. Long Distance Manager arrogantly insisted that we were required to remain at home and accept delivery at any time during a 2 week period estimated delivery window. Finally, the delivery dates were agreed to, after more emails, phone calls, and lots of aggravation. But we weren't done yet.... Since Shleppers insists that all their long distance moves utilize 18 wheeler 73ft long tractor trailers, we had to provide assurance that this size vehicle could safely navigate residential streets at the destination. One of the delivery addresses could not accommodate this size vehicle, so we were required to pay $900+ extra so that Shleppers could contract with a local mover, local personnel and a shuttle truck to offload the shipment from the 18 wheeler, and transfer it to the small shuttle truck for delivery by local personnel at the destination. In a typical "bait and switch" maneuver, Shleppers never used any 73ft tractor trailer, never contracted with any local mover, personnel or local truck to offload the non-existent tractor trailer. Instead, without informing us of the change in delivery plan, they simply used one of the their standard moving vans, for which no extra charge was ever agreed to or contracted, with 2 NY personnel (instead of the usual 3 crew size) and drove down from NY to the first long distance destination. Although Shleppers incurred no extra costs to justify the extra $900+ they had charged us, they have refused to credit that back to us. The owner became abusive, threatening collection and legal action. Unfortunately, problems with Shleppers didn't end there. We had also purchased costly full value coverage for both shipments. 2 boxes were missing after the 2nd shipment was delivered to the next location (by the same standard moving van). Although the cost of this extra insurance is clearly shown on our Bill of Lading, Shleppers insists that we had no full replacement coverage, and so they are generously offering us about $100 for our missing belongings! Best advice: Stay away from Shleppers, especially when looking for a long distance mover!!

Updated review

UPDATED REVIEW
I said I would update my review once I actually received my items.

- On the plus side, every box and item that was picked up was labeled with a number, I got a bill of lading with every item listed, and I was able to check off every item upon delivery. The pickup crew arrived within the window of time specified. Allow for 4 to 5 hours to pack up a 2 bedroom house - the pickup crew took double the time I expected.
-The delivery crew was fine with checking off each box and item off the bill of lading as it came in the door and put everything exactly where I asked them to. The delivery crew was only a 2 man team so again it was a four hour process.

On the other hand, communication with the office itself and the operations manager was incredibly difficult and frustrating. My items were picked up Sunday in a small truck. I was given a 1 to 5 day window for them to be delivered. I figured that meant by Friday, so I scheduled help to come unpack (I'm elderly) the next Sunday. I didn't hear anything from Shleppers on Monday or Tuesday so on Wednesday I called the number on the website and got the New York office. They said they'd email the California office. No response from the California office, so I texted the salesperson that had been my contact prior to pickup. No response, so I called them. He put me through to their operations manager. She informed me that my things were in their yard, "waiting for a truck". I had seen them driven off in a truck, so I was a bit baffled.

Apparently, Shleppers picks up everything in a smaller truck, takes it to their local yard, then unloads it all. It sits in the yard until they have enough clients going to the same area and then they load your items onto a semi along with other clients' things and then drive them up.
This means that the operations manager did not know when my things would be delivered. When I explained that I had people flying in from other states to help me and that I needed to make sure my things were there, she said that she would call me when the truck left with my things on it. This gave me absolutely no information. I wanted to know when, but Shleppers does not actually schedule the shared truck until after they've already got your things and after they have enough clients going to the same place and after the semi gets packed and sent out. When I said it would have been nice for someone to let me know that my things were stuck in their yard waiting, she told me "You're not entitled to a phone call, you didn't rent a full truck's worth of space."
Thursday same thing. No call from the Op manager, no info from Shleppers. I called them and the Op manager still had no info for me.
I came here and posted a review, expressing my frustration. Within 5 minutes of posting my review, I got a text from the Op manager, asking if I had posted a bad review. Then, for the first time, I got a call from her. She was furious that I had written the review. I explained that I would update the review once I got my things. At this point I had given all my things to Shleppers, paid them $2,300+ dollars, and had no idea where my stuff was or when it would be delivered.

I got my things on Sunday afternoon. I had already asked everyone to come later in the week and helped them with the cost of changing their plane flights.

Suggestions for those using Shleppers -
-Pack your boxes full. They will be stacked very high with a lot of weight on them and if there's any gap the boxes will be crushed. I did have a chair arrive with a split leg, a side table with a broken leg, and a vase in a box was shattered. It's a system that will handle your things multiple times and subject them to a great deal of weight. I had 112 boxes and 14 of them showed damage when they arrived. I can't really fault the pickup or delivery people as the process inevitably results in damage unless you pack your boxes full and able to take a lot of weight.
--Be aware that they will charge you for every single item. My bid went from 4000 to 4700 in the blink of an eye. Be very specific as the salesperson is not anywhere in sight when you're in the middle of the actual move. Whatever they imply or promise, you will be charged for everything and anything - even a floor mop.
--Shleppers has you pay half when they pick up your things and half when your things are delivered. I was able to use a check made out to Shleppers upon pickup, but for the delivery I was told I needed cash or a cashier's check. It also had to be made out to the delivery company, not Shleppers. This leads me to believe that Shleppers takes the first half as their payment and then subcontracts out the actual delivery. So while you know who is picking up your things, you don't really know who delivers them. The truck that delivered my things said "Hi Tech Movers" on the side.

Did I get my things? Yes. Were they in good shape? Mostly. Was it an easy experience? No.

The movers were great

The movers were great! Mike and the crew showed up and got to work right away. We had over 20 boxes, that were quite big and heavy. Not to mention couches, TVs, appliances and so on. They moved all this like it was nothing at all. They provided a great service at a reasonable rate.

Hard working movers and good prices. Happy with the move

I had a great experience with all the movers at Shleppers! The service they provideded exceeded what I was expecting. The service was great and on time. They were very careful with a lot of our things, many of which were newly bought. I'm very happy with how the entire move went and feel it was cost effective.

Shleppers are the WORST moving company…

Shleppers are the WORST moving company I have ever used and I would highly recommend you look elsewhere for your moving needs. Their service and support has dramatically declined from when I used them several years ago. Firstly, they sent me a very small truck to move the entire contents of a 1 bedroom apt (they will claim it was based on what I told them I was moving and how many boxes – even though they did not ask for any sizing or measurements). I had to get an additional U-Haul last minute. On top of all that and Shleppers refusing to get a bigger truck or send another one (or even give me a reduced rate on another rental), the movers ruined my velvet sofa by slashing their box cutters into the “protective” film they put on it to prevent damage! So careless. Shleppers offered me $60!! Insulting (again they will tell you they only pay for the weight of an item, not its actual value – so prepared for a 4K sofa to be ruined and then be offered $60). To accept the $60 would have prevented me from being able to write any reviews about them….no thank you.
