Very quick service
I've been keen to try biochar for a while and Soilfixer offered the best price of the sites I looked at. I also really liked the idea of the compost activator which I started using at the weekend (both in the compost bin and that ready to use. Fingers crossed for some great results next year! The products were very quick to arrive.

Charcoal and soil benefits
I found this advertisement when I searched for what has been called “biochar” . It seems to be nothing more than charcoal, in a quite fine dusty powder. I realised that burning some dry shrubs and sticks, as I used to do, in the vegetable bed, would probably be of equal or more benefit, as the wood ash would also be added to the soil, saving, to me the high price, of this product. As to the benefit to my soil, I will find out in a year or so. Overall, I feel the concept is possibly a good one, but, like many newly made up words, only describes something that has been around for a very long time, probably since fire was first discovered.

Hi Tim, thanks for the feedback. We agree with you, but some subtle differences might help explain why commercial biochar is valid. There are many production methods for making 'biochar for soil'. Charcoal is one of them and yes you can make it at home. We feel the main advantage of buying from a supplier is the added quality control over the process. When biochar is made to the European Biochar Certificate standard, there is a minimum level for 'reuse of heat'. (Most DIY charring will lose about 80% of the wood as heat/gases, with only 20% of the wood converted to charcoal). In an advanced retort with a heat energy recovery unit, only 25% is lost to heat/gases, 30% is converted to char and 45% of the heat is recovered and converted to electricity. The standard also requires no air pollution (ie release of volatile organics to air). Most charcoal methods release polluting volatile organics that have a significant negative climate impact. In a retort system, these volatile gases are broken down to the less harmful CO2.

We have a huge number of detailed articles (blogs) on our website. You might like the one on Amazonian Dark Earths - biochar in soil dates back 2000 years! If you do decide to make at home, can I recommend using a Kon-tiki kiln (Ithaka institute, see youtube videos)? In our experience, this is the best and easiest 'clean burn' biochar unit.
